Stadia will stay. It belongs to a multibillion dollar company which just won't let it go anywhere. That considered, Google's platform is actually much, much more likely to allow you to play old gen games than PCs, which have compatibility issues coming from outdated drivers, firmware and hardware. Google will take care of compatibility issues for you, without letting the final user even noticing a hiccup.

What are your plans regarding downloading a game that was purchase. For example I purchase the division 2 . What are your plans 5 or 10 years from now when you have either upgraded your server to a new protocol or discontinued support or the server to service that game. Am I able to download that game. To keep on a device. Or is the game I purchase gone. If so then the game I purchase to own digitally would be an extended rental that's avaiable as some as the servers are up.

this is not just a Stadia issue, it's an issue of all digitally bought goods.

The problem is not the download, the problem is, if the DRM (Digital Rights Management) servers will be shut down, you bought content is gone.

IMHO, that's the same on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, etc. For my self I think, in case of such an event, all of my games are gone.

Hi Wolf!

With Stadia, you can keep playing with the game you purchased as long as you want. They will take care of ensuring compatibility all along the various upgrades of their server, so you don't have to worry about a thing

Stadia doesn't provide extended rentals. That would be typical of Gamepass or Amazon Luna, where you can play with a game for an undisclosed amount of time before it's taken out of the subscription.

With Stadia, games you buy are yours to play. Forever.

I don't think you need to worry about losing access to your games. Google has a variety of other popular services hosted on the cloud and the only thing that can take a game away from the library is if the publisher revoked the license which is very rare and they would let you know ahead of time and even then you would still have access to the game only you can no longer purchase it. Stadia is more akin to PC and the API they use should make the games forward-compatible with newer hardware so your games could end up looking and performing better over the years.

i agree it isn't just a stadia issue. but stadia is the first platform to bring this new form of gaming to this level successfully. I dont know about steam or playstation or even amazon new luna. but microsoft some how stumble on to a solution by making the same game availble to stream and download via console. so even if their servers go down or they discontinue. purchase digital content are still available and accessible through their device. My hope is that stadia stays and solidify it self and not be another tried and fail platform. I'm looking at this from the point of view of a collector of games and console.

I know this is wishful thinking but i wanted or hoping that a decade or two from now i would be able to show my kids or grand kids the collection i obtain through the years. and the growth and develiptment of the industry. stadia platform is the next logical step. but will it stay and if not what do users have to show that it was even there.

Most of the other answers so far have been on point regarding things like DRM, or the fact that any multiplayer game today relies on a multiplayer server still being available. But, I wanted to add on a different aspect. Stadia games will increasingly not be built in the same way as other systems. Cross-platform games are more likely to be self-contained, but we will see more and more Stadia games built in a more distributed fashion, relying on components spread out across multiple services. Even if you could download just the portion that runs on the Stadia client node, it wouldn't run properly on a computer in your home, since it wouldn't be "near" the rest of the pieces – and the rest of those pieces still need to be running in the network in order for the game to work at all. This distributed nature of game design is so different that the idea of downloading a Stadia game just doesn't make sense, except for the sorts of traditional cross-platform games you can already buy and download elsewhere. The value proposition of Stadia does not include the ability to download games at all. Supporting cross-platform games is a nice thing to have, but the real promise of Stadia is in the games that can't be done on other platforms.
