Oof, guys. It had to kinda hurt to type this one up and hit Post. Good on ya for trying.

I have plenty to play and I'm not mad about it... but man. Imagine having to write up a blurb asking people to get excited about paying $60 for a Monster Energy branded racing game that is, right now, $45 on Steam. Honestly the game looks fine if you're into it, but that's a rough gig.

<shrug> Deals are ready to announce when they're ready to announce. I don't think this means more than what it means, but I do think what it means is a pretty big blow to the unique potential of the platform as Google pitched it.

They've promised that in the event that ever happens, users won't lose their paid for games, but they haven't been specific about how they'd cover that promise. That said, I don't think that's a realistic short-term concern. This news doesn't make me think the stuff about their content roadmap for the next couple of years with third parties hasn't been true. It just means that's gonna have to be enough, and <shrug> I mean, we'll see.

...Google, I know you all knew this was going to be poorly received, but I don't know if you knew how poorly. To have this news hit after a couple months of the only good press Stadia ever got is really, really not great. The promise of Stadia was games that could only happen in the cloud, not just everybody else's games running (at best) as good as or slightly worse than on the competition. And a year in, you're shutting down the only source those magic experiences were going to come from. No 3rd party is going to make a Stadia exclusive game that needs their distributed computing to function when Google themselves won't do it even after building two studios with that purpose. We might get more neat side features like the picture-in-picture stuff, but I expect that's gonna be it. This is a reasonable thing to be disappointed about. It's a huge (speculative, but the speculation came from Google) promised upside to the platform that is no longer going to happen. As a founder I have plenty of stuff I'm still actively playing and enjoying on the platform, I'm not goin' anywhere, but it's hard to see how this doesn't trigger a massive wave of "told you so" negative press and make user retention a nightmare. Everything Google has said publicly for the last year, in the very rare instances they've chosen to say anything outside a blog post at all, has been 100% committed to the message of long term, confident investment in this platform. And a lot of us bought that, because, you know, you're Google. You have the money. You did the R&D. You hired Jade Raymond. I think you just shot a lot of that credibility right in the knees, folks. All that said, Grace, thank you for your tireless commitment to this community. I'm sure it absolutely sucks having to handle this news.
@Ivan That may be the case. If it is, I guess we won't have long to wait to find out, since U+ is supposed to arrive this month. I wish they were better about communicating... literally anything, ever.

@Ivan  No worries. Ubisoft's support website is a hellscape, but the closest thing I can find right now is this: https://support.ubisoft.com/en-US/Article/000079203/CrossProgression-Availability-During-Cloud-Gaming-Beta/ Which claims that at least for Luna, Watch Dogs 2 supports cross progression with Ubisoft Connect. I would hope that would be equally true for Stadia, but at the moment I can't find it written down, no. I suppose that since Luna basically is just a Windows PC and Stadia is not, there may be incompatibilities there, but it'd be disappointing to think that the upcoming Ubisoft+ launch on Stadia wouldn't include carrying over save data from anything older than the most recent games.

@Ivan  That article is talking about Watch_Dogs: Legion, I don't believe Watch_Dogs 2 has the same save upload functionality in the menus. I have confirmed that my Stadia and Ubisoft accounts are linked, however. I further confirmed that my PC save is in the cloud (by doing a new install and having it download), and then briefly played and updated that save so it would do a new upload. Still nothing in the Stadia version.

The first day deal on Watch_Dogs 2 was pretty tempting, so I jumped on it, but when I booted it up, it didn't bring over my existing save from the PC platform, which I know is sync'd to the "Ubi cloud", so to speak. Am I missing a step? WD2 is one of the games that was advertised to have cross-progression support, so I expected to see it there. Don't want to play past the refund window without knowing if I'm gonna have to start over.

We certainly won't be getting ray tracing, as Vulkan only just integrated support for it. Hopefully that's something that can be upgraded / patched in someday, though. Performance wise, I'd expect 4k30, with settings roughly in line with PS4 Pro (not PS5) graphics. It's gonna be a long while before Stadia is giving people 3080-level performance. It'll happen eventually, probably, but we're talking years, not months. You can't reliably go buy one of those off the shelf right now, and if you do find one, it's a $700 card. $10 a month isn't gonna get us that.

To be fair, every cloud gaming platform right now is having exactly this issue. GeForce Now has some GTX 2080 rigs that they give to games like AC Valhalla or Watch_Dogs: Legion, and those do run pretty well (though Valhalla still has performance problems, even there), but they've also got a bunch of 2060 rigs that people get slotted onto sometimes and the performance there is terrible. Shadow has delayed their promised upgrades basically all year long, and their rigs struggle to run Valhalla at more than a stable 30fps. I think it's just really hard to broadly upgrade the number of rigs we're talking about here to the newest hardware, no matter how much money you've got to throw around. Not everybody who wanted to pre-order an XBox Series X or a PS5 got one, but there are no limits on getting a Stadia account. They can only provide what they're physically able to provide to everybody, and there's a cap on that that'll probably never exactly match up with the newest thing that exists. That said, it's not like they don't know the new consoles are there. I have to assume hardware upgrades are part of their 2021 roadmap. And Vulkan just started talking about support for ray tracing, so with any luck we'll hear about that in the near future too.
<Scans for news about Ubisoft+ start date> <sighs, closes tab> Chronos sounds cool but I'm not seeing it in the store yet.

This is, for sure, excellent news. But with Fenyx Rising's release right around the bend and Watch_Dogs: Legion and AC: Valhalla both new to the store, there's a potentially $180 or more investment riding on hearing about Ubisoft+ coming to Stadia, which has been announced but not given a date. Any chance we'll hear about that soon? Is that entirely in Ubisoft's court?

Keep in mind, though, Chrome users, part of the reason this topic was made is that if you force 4K, then you're making Stadia render the full 4K on their end, even though you're going to display a lower resolution on your end. This means you won't be getting 60FPS in as many games, and may introduce some extra lag to your gameplay. There should be no reason for any of this, when Google could just increase the bitrate of the 1080 stream (or at least give us that option) and deliver a much cleaner picture at 1080.

Boosting this long after the fact because it's still sorely needed for players using a web browser connection at 1080p. If I force 4K or even 1440p and VP9 encoding via an extension, I get an incredibly sharp, crisp 1080p image, but (1) I shouldn't have to do that, and (2) that loses me the 60FPS benefit of playing at 1080 for games that support it, and I shouldn't have to lose that. On Shadow or GeForce Now I get a picture almost indistinguishable from local play at ultra 1080p settings. Stadia's 1080p picture is comparatively a mess, and it only starts to approach local quality if I force a higher, downsampled resolution. There should be no need for this at all. A higher bitrate is obviously available, since it's used for 4K and the 1080p image quality cleans up fine if you force the stream to downsample 4K to 1080. This is a solved problem. Just let us opt for a higher bitrate with the 1080p stream. Please, Stadia. This one is a no brainer, especially as you open the service up to more new users with demos they're going to get to through the web. Stadia can look great. Just... let it look great.

It was only a $10 discount to begin with. They allowed refunds, and they fixed the problem extremely quickly, they've done much better by everyone than I frankly would have expected them to. What could have been a really bad look for the service's early days now gives me some faith that they'll move quickly to fix a problem when there is one. I say good job to 'em. They earned that extra $10.
