Using Controller from an unsupported country without VPN

Jump to Best Response

Hello community, I recently discovered Stadia as an awesome way to play games while only having a Macbook. I don't have a mouse or a controller and I'm choosing between DualSense and Stadia Controller. I think Stadia Controller would be a great choice if it can help to shave off some latency, but there's a problem.

I'm playing from the unsupported country – Ukraine and I used a VPN extension for the browser to register and am using it to avoid "Game not available in your country" screen when launching a game (after game launch screen Stadia works fine for me with VPN turned off).

As I understand, Stadia Controller connects directly to Google servers via Wi-Fi. So my question is would Stadia Controller be able to connect to servers from an unsupported country, without VPN (cause I have it only in the browser). I think it falls down to wether backend, handling Controllers connections, has the same IP checks like Stadia Web App backend, maybe someone from Stadia Team knows the answer?

P.S. For now I don't want to setup VPN on the router, as it only supports PPTP protocol which is old and seems like a rarely supported among VPN services nowadays, I'm also not found of idea of game stream's WebRTC traffic also being routed through VPN

@thedenoff I don't think that the controller would work in that configuration, but a workaround might be to connect it to your computer with a USB-C cable. It will then function as a standard game controller without needing a Wifi connection.
