Stadia Controller won't update!

Since I received the controller, it won't update via the stadia android app. It connects to the Wi-Fi but fails at updating, the app says that if it fails for a few time, wait 1 h and redo it, doing that for the past 2 days, rebooted every Wifi device in my home and pressed the 2 buttons on the controller for 6 seconds to get the factory reset reboot I guess. Nothing seems to work. Is anybody having the same issue ?

Yes. Exact same thing. I even tried with a different phone. Different wifi networks, nothing. I am still waiting for a callback from google senior support on the issue but I assume the controllers are DOA and need to be returned.

I had the exact same problem as you. The way to fix this is take your Stadia controller and Pixel phone to ... Starbucks or whereever there is a wireless hotspot (or create a mobile hotspot using your Pixel), do a factory reset to the controller by holding down the Google Assistant button and the Screen Capture button for 10 seconds. controller will do a long vibration but continue holding the 2 buttons down until it stops vibrating and turns off. Open the Stadia app and select the controller icon first then turn the controller back on and set up the controller to access the Wifi network (StarbucksWiFi for example). Once it connects to wifi it will push the update for the controller. Once youre back at home, open Stadia app on your pixel and turn on controller. The controller will try to connect to the starbucks wifi (which it cant obviously, unless you live at, in, around, nearby or above the starbucks). it will say ¨Setup Wifi", then you simply access your home wifi network again. and it will prompt you afterwards to set up the screen you wanna play on, connect it to your Chromecast Ultra and everything should be fixed. To link your Stadia Controller to your Chromecast Ultra, with the Stadia App. click on your User Icon image in top right hand corner, Under the settings it will show a Link Controller to Chromecast button and voila!

The problem or error that keeps occuring lies in your home routers network settings and its preventing the controller from connecting to Google's servers through an port connection. It will connect to your wifi network out of the box no problem, but the router or your antivirus software or firewall is blocking the inbound port connection. Unless you know what port to open up in your routers Admin settings, its just easier to take it to a free wifi hotspot.

Hope that helps ya!

Even a year after all of you posted this the issue still exists.
I just wanted to say thank you for providing a fix. I was able to solve my Stadia controller not updating by setting up a Mobile Hotspot with my phone and updating it through that.
Would never have come up with that workaround myself so I came here to say thanks @villagebicycle .

Same here can’t set up a hot spot because your phone has to be connected to WiFi to even begin. Startbucks say connect but no internet.   So I guess it’s just junk welcome to Google products
