I am unable to connect a Stadia Controller to any device when using Express VPN.
I have tried everything and read through many forum posts to get this to work for my son. He loves FIFA but since he has difficulty finding online games in the US we are trying to use Express VPN to connect to London.
Stadia works fine. I was able to do it on my Mac with my Nintendo controller once I'd disabled the Express VPN chrome extension. But using his iPad or the TV, when you enter the four digit code to connect the controller, it does not connect. When you turn off the VPN, no problem so I don't think it is port blocking. His iPad doesn't support usb3 connection to the Stadia Controller and when I connect wired to the TV, only A and B buttons work.. Since our other controllers also don't seem to work properly on any TV or the iPad, I just need any way for him to play Stadia using a VPN with any controller but ideally the Stadia one. We have tried the Stadia app and browser no luck. It appears that maybe the Stadia Controller needs location to actually connect and so maybe this is not possible. If not, that would help as I can stop spending hours trying to get it to work and annoying my wife who thinks I am "wasting time". Any help or pointers much appreciated!
@Tjedmonds70 using VPN with Stadia is not recommended and definitely not supported, so it’s expected to come across issue. I’ve heard similar cases like this and the solution is usually turning off VPN.
Regarding FIFA matchmaking, they recently turn on cross play testing across all platforms, so hopefully your son will have better matchmaking even without using VPN.

Hi @Tjedmonds70
Using VPN is not supported and there is no way to use VPN with the controller on WiFi. The only option is use VPN on your router/modem so every device uses the VPN.
But please know EA is going to enable crossplay with PS5 etc. https://www.ea.com/en-gb/games/fifa/fifa-22/news/pitch-notes-fifa-22-cross-play-test-faq
Yes, but the cross play only works in Seasons and he plays Ultimate Team. Hoping they add it across all modes in fifa 23
Hi @Tjedmonds70 the usage of VPN is highly not recommended since it adds as a layer between your connection and stadia servers, this may cause several issues including the one you are reporting, probably the connection can not happen because the iPad and the controller must be connected to the same wireless network, using a VPN on one of the two may cause it to recognize the network as being the same.
Do you have any other controller that you can use wired (or Bluetooth) with the iPad?
Yes, I tried to get the iPad to connect to his Switch controller but it could not discover it. I also use a Nintendo Switch controller when I play on my Mac/Chrome and fine even with VPN. Now I know he can't use Stadia controller, I will see if I can get this to work. We never realized you can play Stadia/FIFA on the TV without any pc or phone until yesterday so he is really enjoying that
Ok so it looks like Nintendo Switch Pro controller does not work with the iPad so that leaves me getting a controller connected on chromcast. I would think Stadia supports Bluetooth or wired?
@Tjedmonds70 You can use Phone Link to connect your supported controller using wired connection / bluetooth to your phone, to play Stadia games on TV. The official Switch Pro controller is supported through this method.
