Stadia Controller Update Failed

Jump to Best Response

I tried to factory reset both Stadia Premiere controllers I have and used multiple devices and internet connections. On setup of the controllers it tries to update the firmware, gets to the very end, and then says "update failed." I am running Android 12 on a Pixel 6 (tried this on a Pixel 4a as well also running Android 12). I use a Google Wifi router and have tried turning on and off the preference settings for Stadia - keeps failing. I have chatted with Stadia support and they also didn't know what's up and have an escalated ticket open that hasn't been updated yet. Anyone else here experienced this? Any solutions for this?

Already tried that and had no luck. I took the controllers to a friend's house and the update worked using their internet. I'm guessing there's some issue with the ISPs I had previously tried. I tried everything with the router and still had issues. I've read that some ISPs have issues with some portion of the update process. My home internet is T-Mobile Home Internet.

Hi everyone,

For anyone still having issues with their controller not updating, we recommend attempting to connect them to a different Wireless Network. It's possible that if you have a less than optimal network connection, the update won't be able to install properly on the Stadia Controller.

Thank you,

James

Hi @tomchop,

I'm sorry that you are getting an update fail on your Stadia Controllers. I can imagine how frustrating that must be. I do have a couple of suggestions that might help based on the info you have mentioned.

First, let's try just one more time to force an update following these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Stadia button Stadia button for one second to turn on your Stadia Controller.
  2. The Stadia button will slowly blink white for approximately 12 seconds while it connects to Wi-Fi.
  3. The Stadia button will blink orange and white while it applies the critical update. During this time you won't be able to use your controller.

Now this is a long shot, but you mentioned that you have google WiFi, could you double check if you have Bridge Mode enabled? Let us know when you can. Depending on how all of this goes, we'll check on what our next steps can be.

Thank you,

James

I'm having the same problem with updating my controller. I've tried many times and used a mobile hotspot and it always fails or gets stuck updating. I contacted support and they want to replace it but I doubt it will fix the issue if it's a problem with the ISP. I have Xfinity internet and TMobile hotspot. If the replacement works I will let you all know.

The same issue I've had on two brand new 12/2019 units have already be replaced with new ones from Google (4 units now), I've performed endless resets, and I've done cellular hotspot and testing across different networks. It's not an issue with the ISP, as analysis of the network shows zero activity when it fails the software update. Very much appears to be a defective batch from the 12/2019 warehouse lot used for the recent Stadia Premier promotions in my opinion. My issue has been escalated into a support blackhole, so I'm not confident in Google Support. (If) I need to use a controller, I'll just stick to a PS4 or other Bluetooth console controller. So much easier. If you paid cash money, I feel bad for you.

Thanks for the info, luckily I got it through the recent promo and I've been playing with an Xbox controller.

Yup. Sounds like what I've got. Is it same 12/2019 manufacture date also?

I keep hearing the same canned response advising a different network or hotspot, ignoring the user reports that this has already been attempted. Nevermind that I analyzed the data in real time at the network and saw ZERO ACTIVITY from the Stadia controllers during the update error. Nevermind that cellular hotspot was already attempted. Nevermind that Stadia Support has escalated the issue for weeks now with silence. I'm a very technically adept person, so I find these canned responses are insulting.

I'm currently having an issue updating my controller. I've tried different networks and devices and it still fails every time. What was your fix?

I'm waiting on a replacement but it seems the only fix is to try the wifi at a friend's house or public WiFi and pray it works.

Keyword is pray. lol. I've tried 3 different wireless networks plus cellular hotspot already. Now they're just sitting in storage waiting for Google Support. I've resigned myself to use a different brand wireless game controller permanently. Hopefully, a replacement works for some of us.

I got 3 new ones for the family using the recent promos. My internet is great for streaming Stadia games, but all 3 controllers fail to update and won't work out of the box.

This is ridiculous.

That's too bad. My thoughts all along have been that they had bad batches at the warehouse and marketing just unloaded these at people to get rid of them. Basically, they are borked.

I finally found a solution that worked for me!

I needed to change my router from Mixed G/N mode to G-only (I'm using the 2.4 GHz connection for this).

This was after, like many others, lots of factory resets and hardware resets, trying both networks, etc.

Another niche hint I found (that didn't really work for me) is https://support.google.com/stadia/answer/9595943?hl=en&ref_topic=9495216#zippy=%2Cstadia-controller-... . One thing from this I did was turn off WMM in the advanced wireless settings on my router, I'm not sure if this helped (it didn't work by itself before I change the mode).

After updating I was able to change it to N-Only and NG-Mixed, both work for playing games (also I turned WMM back on).

Thanks for sharing! I'll give that a try on the 802.11 band tip. I'm not sure WMM plays a role, since I've already messed with DMZ and a straight connection without any firewall or network security configurations. I'll update this thread if it works for me also, but probably won't be until this weekend since both units are in storage now.

Also, WMM is a feature of 802.11N and newer, so probably wouldn't even be available on G. G is much older of the two.
