Does the controller work with the shield?

Also, is it a better controller then the shield controller?

Hi @n3

Yes, you can now play Stadia using the Stadia controller on Nvidia Shield.  There was an update on June 23rd, 2021 that updated Stadia to support Google TV and other Android TVs such as the Nvidia shield.

Here is part of the community update post that details the supported devices as of 6/23/21

"For this initial launch, Stadia will be officially supported on the following devices:

  • Chromecast with Google TV
  • Hisense® Android Smart TVs (U7G, U8G, U9G)
  • Nvidia® Shield TV
  • Nvidia® Shield TV Pro
  • Onn™ FHD Streaming Stick and UHD Streaming Device
  • Philips® 8215, 8505, and OLED 935/805 Series Android TVs
  • Xiaomi® MIBOX3 and MIBOX4"

Hope this helps!!!

Hi @n3,

As I understand it, the Stadia Controller will work with the Nvidia Shield in the same way that it works with any other supported Android TV or Chromecast device. So to answer your questions:

  • The Stadia controller has dedicated buttons for Stadia-specific features, like screen captures or interacting with the Google Assistant. It also may provide a lower-latency connection - more on that in a moment.
  • The built in mic on the Stadia controller does not work for voice chat. It's really only used for voice interactions with the Google Assistant. You'd need to use an additional wired headset for voice chat.
  • Yes, the voice chat should work just fine with your headset connected to the Stadia Controller.
  • The Stadia controller connects using WiFi directly to the Stadia instance hosting your game, bypassing your Nvidia Shield (or computer, or Chromecast) completely. This can provide lower input latency since the control inputs aren't first being process locally. That also means that your voice chat connection goes straight to The Cloud; the device actually displaying the game stream doesn't matter.
  • And yes, the Stadia Controller will vibrate. Again, it's connecting to the gaming instance in The Cloud, not your Nvidia hardware.

I hope that helps!

@alex2189 the Stadia controller doesn't support Bluetooth connections. To use it in non-Stadia apps on any device you would have to connect it via USB.

The wireless connection will only work with Stadia since it's connecting over WiFi to the Stadia gaming instance in the cloud rather than the local host device.

I can't tell you whether the Stadia Controller also works with Nvidia, but it wasn't built or developed for that either

Its primary function is intended for Google Stadia :slightly_smiling_face:

If you are planning to buy a Stadia controller just to play on the Nvidia Shield, please be advised that Google cannot and will not provide you with any support

This big question is, is there any advantage on buying this when I already have a sheild remote?

Something else to add based off my research. It appears I'm not able to use voice/chat using the shield remote?

A couple other questions...

- Does the built in mic on the stadia controller work for voice chat?
- Does voice chat actually work with the stadia controller using it with Nvidia Shield
- I use a hardwired connection for the shield, but the controller uses wireless to communicate?
- Does the controller support vibration when using the Shield?

Thanks for this information.

If I wanted chat ability using my shield is there anyway to do it without buying the controller?

@n3 It sounds like a Bluetooth headset connected to your Shield would allow you to hear the game audio and party chat, but it won't work for voice input.

When playing Stadia on Google TV or Android TV, you'll be able to hear party chat and game audio over your headset, but you won't be able to use a Bluetooth microphone to speak in voice chat.

So no, I think you'd need to purchase the Stadia Controller if you wish to have all of the Stadia features (including voice chat) when playing on a TV.
