Stadia Controller A button launches Google Assistant

Jump to Best Response

I have 2 Stadia Controllers. On one of them, every time I press the A button, the Google Assistant is launched. This makes the controller unusable because the assistant is an overlay over the screen. I get some other weird behavior with other buttons, but it's hard to track down what's happening. My other controller works fine.

I've tried to factory reset it according to these instructions, but it doesn't seem to be working. https://support.google.com/stadia/answer/9584135?hl=en&ref_topic=9495415

I was able to disconnect it form WiFi and it had an update after I reconnected it, but the issue still persists.

Sorry to hear about that @kennyc. Just to help clarify, this is what you were trying to do when you were factory resetting your controller?

"

When you factory reset your Stadia Controller, all Wi-Fi login information is removed from it.

  1. Make sure your Stadia Controller is on.
  2. Press and hold the Google Assistant MrVacca_0-1630575422453.png

     and Capture MrVacca_1-1630575422454.png

     buttons simultaneously for 6 seconds.
  3. The controller will vibrate and the status light will blink."

Hi, sorry for the late reply. Yes, that's the method I'm following. After holding the assistant and capture buttons for 6 seconds, the controller turns off, but when I turn it back on, it still connects to the wifi and is ready to link. The issues with the buttons are still present, too.

I've been trying it several more times, with it connected to different devices, using WiFi, using a cable, while charging, but nothing has worked to get it reset.

Hi @kennyc,

Thanks for posting. Sorry you are having this issue. I can imagine this could be pretty frustrating. I'd like to ask a couple of questions just to make sure we understand all the aspects of this issue.

  • When did this issue start? Or has it always been an issue?
  • Do you experience the issue when playing a specific game, in all games, or just when you navigate the Stadia UI?
  • If your A button is mapped to Google Assistant, is the opposite also true? Does your Google Assistant button trigger actions that would normally be accomplished when you press A?
  • When did you purchase your Stadia Controller?

I do have a kind of out of the box suggestion that may or may not work. Instead of holding the Google Assistant and Capture buttons to do the factory reset, what if you attempted to hold the A and Capture buttons for 6 seconds?

Keep us updated, we're here to help.

Thank you,

James
