Link Code don't link

I have 2 connections at home:  Comcast and T-Mobile (5G Home internet). On Comcast, I have a Wi-Fi 6 RAX-60 router (4+4axc) and on T-Mobile, I have a Nokia 5G Wi-Fi 6 router (4+4+4ax)

Both routers are Wi-Fi 6 (super duper high performance Wi-Fi)

My Comcast connection is 600 Mbps  and my Internet T-Mobile is 100 Mbps

In both networks, I am using an AndroidTV Set Top boxes (same box)

When I connect my stadia controller on the Comcast network, the linking code does not work with the Set Top Box. I repeated this 10 times. The controller and the screen never sync. up

When I do the same on T-Mobile, it works - no problems.

What is going on? Are there any special features that I need to turn ON on the Router? I seriously doubt that the problems is on Comcast end.

Can someone suggest any ideas? I have no clues what to do... other than return the controller (just bought it)

Hi @worldhunger,

Is your Android TV box connected to both networks? Or do you have separate Android TV boxes: one (or more) on each network?

Are you using the Stadia app on your phone to switch the controller between the networks?

What happens when you try to link the controller to the box on the Comcast network? Any vibration or light patterns on the controller?

Thanks!

Hi Codesplice, My ATV set top box is connected to one of the network at a time. There are 2 SSID. One associated with Comcast and one with T-Mobile. I use the stadia App. on my phone to switch controller between the 2 networks. Of course, I have to change the wireless connection on the Set Top box as well.. When the link code does not work, the controller vibrates twice quickly (consecutive) and the light remains flashing. When the Link code does work, then the light is solid white.

I did additional tests yesterday and I was able to make it work on the Comcast network by connecting the AndroidTV Set Top box to an Ethernet cable connected to an Orbi extender hanging off the Comcast router (over Wi-Fi). In other words, the Set Top box is Ethernet connected but the end connection to the Comcast is Wi-Fi.

Why does Ethernet work but not direct Wi-Fi??

I don't understand the underlying protocol for link code. I have an hypotheses that when you enter a Link Code on the controller, the Stadia Cloud servers, send a special packet (IP Multicast?) that is read by the comcast Router and then forwarded to all devices in the home. Only the AndroidTV Set Top box is supposed to answer back. Thus allowing the Stadia Servers to know where to stream to (IP address of Set Top box).

Somehow, when the Set Top Box is connected over Wi-Fi this packet is lost or corrupted. In other words, somehow the Packet sent as part of the Linking Code is not getting to the Set Top Box intact. I turned off IGMP snooping on  my router and still Wi-Fi does not work. The Wi-Fi configuration of the T-Mobile 5G router are lame - there is nothing special.

That certainly sounds like there's something screwy with the Comcast WiFi which is somehow preventing the Android TV box from functioning correctly while it's connected to the Comcast WiFi network.

Can you try linking your Stadia controller with your phone while connected to the Comcast WiFi?

Hello @worldhunger,
Just wanted to check in here to see if you were able to see John's previous reply? Do you still need help? Let us know when you can.

Thanks,

Hi James, I did more testing. I am able to connect the Stadia controller to an iPad (browser) and it works well - connected to the same Wi-Fi.

In other words, Wi-Fi works fine with a Tablet. The problem seems to be the AndroidTV Set Top Box.

I don't understand what happens during link code exchange. My assumption is that the Stadia controller is communicating the code to the Stadia server. The Stadia server is then sending a Multicast packet to the home asking that the screen 'identified with that specific code" to answer back. By doing so, it gains the IP address of the screen (AndroidTV Set Top Box). I assume that something is lost from the router to the Set Top Box. Because other applications such as YouTube work well, I suspect that the AndroidTV Wi-Fi drivers don't like that packet,

It is pure speculation because I don't understand what happens behind the scenes.

Hi @worldhunger,

I am trying to see if I can potentially figure out a cause for you. I am thinking it is due to distance and signal strength between your comcast router and your Android tv but I also don't know how far either is from one another compared to the T-Mobile router.

Also am I correct is saying your comcast router is a netgear one given to you by Comcast? <- just going off of original post and a quick google search

The Netgear router is one that I procured. It was not provided by comcast. It is connected to a DOCSIS 3.1 modem from Comcast.

Distance cannot be an issue here because everything else works fine . like YouTube over Wi-Fi

The codes don't work and my explanation is that they are sent as Multicast packets ... rather than unicast.

Hi @worldhunger again,

I'm sorry about the delay in responding but I have been thinking

unless I am not understanding correctly, your android TV works on your Comcast network using a Orbi extender to connect your TV with an Ethernet cable. that would mean it is wireless but not according to what the android TV thinks. that would mean the android TV should work on WiFi as well with the exception of the android TV not actually switching from your T-Mobile network to your Comcast one.

I can think of a way to test it out though. after switching to your Comcast network on your android TV turn off your T-Mobile router for a few minutes to see if you still have a internet on your android TV
