You need to link your Stadia Controller to a screen before you can use it to play. In order to play on a TV with Chromecast, a mobile device, or on web with Chrome, you’ll need to use a linking code to link your Stadia Controller wirelessly.
To let your Stadia Controller know which screen you want to play on wirelessly, you’ll need to enter a linking code for that screen. The linking code lets you easily change which screen your controller is linked to. Each screen will have its own unique linking code that will rarely change.
Enter linking codes from left to right, one button at a time. Linking codes are 4-5 characters long and consist of only Up, Down, Left, Right, A, B, X, Y.
Here is a sample of what a linking code looks like. The code for your screen will be different.
Note: If the status light blinks orange, it means the controller can’t connect to Wi-Fi. Open the controller menu in the Stadia app to set up the controller with Wi-Fi. If you need to change the Wi-Fi on your Chromecast, use the Google Home app.
This isn’t working for me no matter how many times I connect my controller to the wifi
Hi @Danrulez129, sorry to hear you're having problems. Are you currently using 2.4 or 5.0GHz frequencies for your wireless network? Often times, the 2.4GHz band is heavily trafficked, so if there are many devices within your household or nearby, it can destabilize your connection. There are tools to help you find a more open channel out there. I also recommend trying to play from closer to your access point (router or wi-fi extender) to see if that helps at all.
I think I might be having the same issue. Does your controller still work in the Stadia menu but not in-game?
I've been having issues wirelessly linking my Stadia controller to my 2017 MacBook Air since wireless play was officially launched. I never have any issues connecting to my CCU or my mobile phone (OG Pixel), but for whatever reason linking to my MacBook Air is incredibly inconsistent. Sometimes it connects almost immediately after inputting the proper linking code, other times it will not connect at all after many attempts. I've followed all the linking steps, and it's just so bizarre that this only affects me on my laptop. It works absolutely fine when it's wired, but for whatever reason it just does not want to play nice. I've created a thread about this in the past and support followed up months ago but the issue never really resolved itself, despite it sometimes working, sometimes not. Very hit or miss and hard to determine what the actual problem is.
Any help?
Hello!
When I try to link my Stadia controller wirelessly with my phone by entering my link code, after a few seconds, the controller vibrates and the light on the controller blinks orange, then it returns to blinking white. I am able to link my controller to my Chromecast Ultra, as well as a PC running Chrome wirelessly. I'm also able to use the controller on my phone if I connect it via a USB-c.
The instructions within parts of the app indicate that I should be able to link in this fashion, but one of the help screens indicates otherwise:
Please advise.
I'm having issues connecting the Stadia controller to my Chrome browser on my PC.
All works fine on both my CCUs and my Pixel 4 but browser doesnt seem to want to listen.
I hold down the Stadia button,
Type in the 4 digit code displayed on screen,
Controller rumbles and shows a solid white light,
The browser doesn't respond with any indication (should turn the 4 digit code briefly green),
After about 30 second the controller powers down again.
No idea whats wrong but it just doesnt seem to want to acknowledge the controller got linked.
Ping! Exact same issue here.
Same issue.

What I’ve Tried:
Alright y’all, after countless hours over the last six months I figured it out by systematically changing one setting at a time on my ISL modem and TP-Link Deco WiFi mesh units.
I did the following two things and everything seemed to work:
Please try this and let me know if it helps any of you. Good luck.
Power off
Power on+y (hold both at same time)
Enter code on stadia app
Connect to new refreshed wifi
Not sure if this is still an on going issue but it just happened to me. I was able to troubleshoot the same issue and I found that if you are using a Ubiquiti (Unifi) USG and AP, in the settings of the management, if you have the Threat management enabled, disable it and try to sync the controller again. Upon disabling it, I was able to connect the controller. After it was connected, I enabled the threat management and no issues for now.
Hope that it helps anyone.
Take care.
@Deebo6142003 thank you so much! Saved me hours.
Glad that I could help as it was driving me nuts!
"Note: If the status light blinks orange, it means the controller can’t connect to Wi-Fi. Open the controller menu in the Stadia app to set up the controller with Wi-Fi."
My stadia controller is blinking orange. Please explain how to "set up the controller with Wi-Fi".
When I open the stadia app on my phone, it just gives me a connection code. I have entered the connection code on my controller many times, while the controller is blinking orange, with no response.
What type of equipment are you using for your network? Ex. Router, switch, etc.
If you are using a home router, I would start by temporarily disabling any security features such as firewalls, security tampering features such as port blocking software on the router then try to connect the stadia. Also, I would reboot the router, phone and stadia.
Hi everybody,
I have a huge problem using my Stadia Controller on Chromecast Ultra. The Contoller is connected to my WiFi network and successfully linked to the Chromecast Ultra.
I can start the game (e.g. Cyberpunk 2077), BUT when it comes to acutally play the game the game control is set on keyboard and mouse and it is not even possible to skip the intro.
I allready set back everything to default settings, but it is still not working.
Note: The Controller is successfully connected to the Chromecast ultra (the same WiFi networkI. I can press the Stadia button to get to the settings or make a screenshot, but the gameplay is set on Keyboard and mouse.
Here you have a screenshot how it looks on my TV.
I hope, somebody has a hint for me.
Thank you!
Hmm, try using a computer and go to stadia.google.com and pair the controller there. Try and play the game for a bit then disconnect. Also, try hard resetting the chromecast as well.
Hi Deebo,i
thanks for your reply. Unfortunately that didn't work for me.
Beside this I already tryed with different games, multiple resets to factory settings for both, the controller and the Chromecast Ultra, I tried different Computers, I tried the solution postet by @PNUT (link https://community.stadia.com/t5/The-Stadia-Controller/Controller-stops-working-after-game-starts/m-p...). But nothing worked for me so far.
The only way I can play with the Controller is to connect it by cable with a Computer.
Do you have any other suggestions?
No problem. Okay, try this and see if this helps. Open the Stadia app on your phone. Next, select the game that you want to play then select the option (where to play), select the Chromecast and then, hard resetting your Stadia remote by powering it down. Then, hold the S button and the Y button for about 5 to 6 seconds but, you have to release the S button as soon as it powers on holding only the Y button. Pair the remote through the app on the right side and see if that helps.
If that doesn't work, go to your Google home app and disconnect the casting on your phone. It will disconnect the Stadia remote and attempt to link it again.
Hopr this helps.
Thank you so much!!! Your suggestion with hard resetting the Controller actually worked.
I'm very happy now.
Glad to hear that it worked! Game on and enjoy!
What router are you using? Name, model, version number revision number of the operating system on the router.
Thank you for your answer.
Well, I have a AVM Fritz!Box 7490 with the last OS (7.21). I tried to disable some security features (and reboot it) without results.
I also tried to connect with Wi-Fi of my smartphone and configure controller with another smartphone, same result.
You are welcome and it sounds like you are being blocked and maybe because you may not have the right DNS addresses from your router to your devices. If you can, copy the information of your router when it automatically receives it from your ISP (internet service provider) to Google servers. I believe the ips are 8.8.8.8. Try adding that dns entry to your router and also, if there is any DDOS service running aggressively on your router. Finally, try turning off your firewall on the router and attempt to connect the stadia to the router. If it connects, look at the connected devices and try to see if there is an option that allows you to set it as a preferred device or connection.
Hope this helps. It seems like that is a European router?
