It seems that the problem was related to my Moto X Force smartphone, which was not able to connect the controller to my Wi-Fi. I have now tested it with a Pixel 3a XL and it did work on the first try.

I have a similar problem with connecting the controller through my Pixel 4XL.
Worth noting that it's a controller I had previously connected to the same wifi without any problem in the past. Today after lending the stadia to a friend and changing my phone to the Pixel 4 XL, it's become totally impossible to connect it again...
I'm using a 3a XL myself and cannot seem to get it to work

I've also had this issue with a new Premiere edition bundle controller (white Rev. A). Using my Samsung S9, I was unable to connect to my WiFi network using WPA2-PSK-AES on its 5 GHz SSID (channel 120), whereas it did connect on a 2.4 GHz SSID.
I use the same 5 GHz SSID for all my other devices no problem. Mixed-case, alphanumeric, 12 character password on the 5 GHz network. I eventually joined it to a separate 2.4 GHz SSID on the same router I created solely for 'troublesome' devices which uses an 11 character password with symbols in (an exclamation mark).
Any reason the Stadia app can't do an ad-hoc join to the controller then pass the specified WiFi network credentials to it, like Google Home does with Chromecasts?
Not sure if this post is still active.
just got stadia on recommendation from friend.
can’t connect controllers. Spent an entire evening trying and no luck at all.
tried 2.4 and 5ghz factory reset the chromecast, reset controllers. Nothing.
please help.
Got these for my kids. They aren’t going to be happy when it doesn’t work!

I have a google pixel 4 xl and this **bleep** thing won't connect to the 5g extender. Any solutions??
Got the same problem. Chromecast Ultra connected to the wifi, Stadia app on my pixel 3xl found the controller but can't bring it on wifi. Tried reboot router, reboot phone, reset controller, nothing works.
I got the same issue and resolved with my solution:
Use phone A as hotspot and phone B to set up the controller to update. Then switch to my home WiFi and set home WiFi router to use short and lower case password. Then it can connect...Probably the last step was the reason.though.
Same here. Stadia Help was no help at all.
The problem might be with devices that use WiFi 6. I was able to solve this issue by connecting the controller to the phone while being close to a WiFi 5 AP in my house. I also used an older generation iPhone. I don't know if that makes a difference here.
