Can't connect controller to Pixel 3

Jump to Best Response

When I plug my controller into my Pixel 3 while it's off, it turns orange (charging?). Then when I press the Stadia button on the controller for 1 second, it automatically connects to my Chromecast/TV and even though it shows up as a connected controller in the Stadia app, when I load up a game it on my phone it says "no controller connected"

Is there a way to stop it from automatically connecting to my Chromecast when I turn it on and/or only connect to my phone when it's plugged in?

Thanks

@GreatScout That sounds like there might be something screwy with the USB-C connection between the phone and the controller. Does your phone display a notification about "charging connected device" when you connect the controller? If so, try tapping it to see if you can get to the USB Preferences and change the mode.

Failing that, you might also try a different USB-C cable and/or making sure there isn't any debris stuck in the phone's USB-C port.

I think you are right @codesplice, I tried a different cable and as soon as I plugged it in it connected, launched the Stadia app, and worked in-game immediately. Very easy! Thanks a lot everyone.

@GreatScout Good to hear!

I've actually noticed that my "shorty" 1-foot USB-C cable seems to be on the way out. Ever now and then I'll move a certain way and cause the controller to disconnect from the phone. Wiggle the cable a bit and it reconnects. No problems with my 3-foot cable or the short A-to-C cable I use in conjunction with a USB-C hub so that I can charge the phone while playing so I've ordered another couple of shorties.

That happened to me when playing on pixel 2. It worked when I turned off the Chromecast.
