Tom Clancy Division 2 starts to micro stutter after 30ish mins of play

Jump to Best Response

I have two nvidia shield devices, and I primarily play stadia through the stadia app on the cylinder 2019 version.

I've been playing a lot of Division 2 of late and I've noticed that after about 30 mins of play micro stutters start to make an appearance and then as time goes on it gets gradually worse and I just give up after an hour and end the game.

I thought the issue was my shield overheating, I even took it apart and reapplied thermal paste but same issue, and even stuck a big fan on it and also same issue.

It was then I thought when it is stuttering on the one shield, let me turn that shield off while in a game and then pop downstairs and start up the game on my other shield which was cold starting which took me back into the game exactly where I left off.

The exact same game stutter was present on this shield too, so I knew it wasn't a shield device overheating issue. The game plays smooth as butter for at least 30 mins before it gradually gets worse and it's starting to really annoy me.

Could it be Google or my ISP (BT) starting to throttle stadia after a set amount of time or is the issue somewhere else?

When a suitable timeslot allows I think I will just restart the WAN connection on my pfsense router to see if that fixes the stutter immediately before the cycle begins all over again. If it doesn't I'll reboot the router and try again. If neither of those fix it, then the issue is either with the ISP or with Google itself.

Anyone else suffering this problem and have any words of wisdom?

Hi @Salty

I am sorry to hear about the issues you’re having with The Division 2 and the micro-stuttering. I’ve been putting a lot of hours into that game this week and haven’t had that issue pop up.
When the micro stuttering starts, what happens when you switch to a different game? Does the same thing happen if you were to spend 30-60 minutes on a different game?

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help!

Hi @Salty,

Does it help if you open Ubisoft connect within the game to fix these issues?

There can be some strange performance issues with Ubisoft games that are fixed by opening Ubisoft connect within the game. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @Salty,

This is a specific Ubisoft issue I am afraid.
Best thing you can do is report a issue at Ubisoft about this. :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@RXShorty ... finally got round last night to trying out your earlier suggestions as wasn't well over the weekend so didn't play any games. To my surprise switching out to ubisoft connect from within the game and then coming straight back brought I think most of the smoothness back. Went from jittery eye pain mess scrolling on the map to almost perfectly smooth again.

What a crazy situation. Is it ubisoft or stadia at fault with this issue?

I need to have a gaming session again on SpongeBob as I'm pretty sure that was definitely suffering the same issues and that as far as I'm aware isn't a ubisoft game.

Quick update, I hit the issue as always last night and tried out a few things but didn't find the silver bullet.

So what I can discount so far as the cause of the issue, as the tests below I undertook while in the same Division 2 session:

1. Connecting to different streaming device via stadia app on my home network does not alleviate the micro stuttering

2. I turned off FQ_CODEL Traffic Shaping limiters in PFSENSE which I added to aid buffer bloat to see if that was the cause, it wasn't

3. I rebooted the router and then reconnected back in to the same gaming session, stuttering exactly same as before, no change.

I'll try the options suggested by MrVacca and RXShorty a little later today and update this list.

I do think the problem is with all Stadia games. As I was playing SpongeBob with my daughter and I noticed it in that game too. It is almost as those the frames per second is dropping in the games, maybe starts off at 60 and then drops to 30 or less. panning the screen left to right is very stuttery in a consistent way. If I'm in the middle of a heated battle in Division 2, for example playing heroic with 4 teammates taking a checkpoint, the stuttering gets even worse, its hard to be accurate with your shooting. It is as though stadia doesn't have the horsepower to run the game, the streaming bandwidth requirement to me shouldn't change, no matter how much action is going on in the screen.

I am running the game in 1080p mode too, as my TVs are only Full HD, not 4k. Just thought I did try and drop the setting to 720p in the Stadia app too and that made no difference either. I should add that to the list above of failed attempts to fix too.

I'll try and take some video with my phone and post here, so you can see the before and after comparison clearly.

Where is that option, are you referring to a setting in the stadia app or in the nvidia shield settings, I'm not familiar with seeing such a setting?

After a quick google I think you are referencing an option when playing in a browser, I'm not playing in a browser, I'm playing via stadia app on the nvidia shield.

Sorry, I missread your first post and thought you would use a nvida graphics card,

I have added the two mp4s I took with my phone to highlight that the game is smooth initially and then over time (30+ mins), gets more and more stuttery as time goes on, the latter which is winding me up and makes the game close to unplayable. The issue is most notable when panning the map, night and day difference.
