Bought a brand new NVIDIA SHIELD Pro to play Stadia cloud gaming, because Chromecast was too glitchy. I needed something to run Stadia to my tv that could accept an Ethernet cable. But it turns out Stadia will not launch on the Shield. It messages that "Stadia will not run unless I update Google Play services" When I click the update link it asks for which Google account. I select mine, (the only one there is) and it dumps me back to the Android TV home screen. I have rebooted my router, reinstalled Stadia, updated all things possible, rebooted the Shield, even factory reset. I've called Nvidia, chatted with Stadia support, and they both have open dockets for the issue. Stadia works fine on all my other devices. The Shield launches all other apps no problem. The saddest part is Stadia is the only reason I spent 200 on the Nvidia Shield, and it's the only app that won't launch. I wasn't looking for another way to stream Netflix or YouTube. I just wanted a steady wired connection for cloud gaming. Has this happened to anyone else? Don't want to send it back, but I will if I can't resolve this.
Thank you for checking. It was frustrating but I came back to it a few hours later and the problem had resolved itself. Now I'm playing again .
I have no idea about this shield problem, but there is an option to use a chromecast / G TV with Ethernet:
Ethernet-Adapter für Chromecast mit Google TV – Google Store
Thanks for the link. I might get one . As for now the app has started working for some reason I don't know.
The shield (pro) is officially supported. So there shouldn't be a reason to buy something else, again. Personal did not have these issues.
Hey @claystoke,
I'm really sorry you are having this issue. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be. Just wanted to hop in here to see if you were still having this issue? Give us an update when you can.
Thank you.
James

Hey that's awesome! Super happy that you got it to work again.
Happy gaming!
James
I am having a similar problem and it has not resolved. Mine does not involve Shield (and I don't know what that is), but like the original poster, I'm trying to open the Stadia app on my new television. Every time, I get a message saying I can't open it unless I update Google Play services. I click the update button, it asks me which account (my only one, which I select), then it kicks me back to the previous screen asking if I want to open the Stadia app (and again if I try to, I get the same message about Google Play services, and round we go. Help?
I am sorry to hear about your problem. I remember how aggravating it was for me at the time. I wish I had a tip for you but the next day it just started working for no apparent reason. No problem since. If you haven't already you should start a support ticket with Stadia and reference this post so they can see that it is a recurring bug in the app. Good luck and keep checking back on it. It might start working.
Hi everyone,
This is an older post so we're going to go ahead and lock it now. If anyone still needs help after trying the suggestions here, I'd recommend creating a new post so that you can get better visibility in our community.
Thank you,
James
