Happy New year all!
I’m a big cloud gaming fan and if course Stadia is my favourite because of it’s convenience. I tried 2 months if the pro subscription and it’s a great experience on my 55 inch LG and my wired (250 Mbit/s) mecool m8s pro L with a ps3 controller.
So my plan was to buy Red Dead Redemption 2 on Stadia base to play it on 1080p60. That’s perfectly fine for a occasional gamer like me.
So I bought RDR2 a couple of days ago. I immediately fell in love with the game. But after a few minutes I saw the washed out blurry graphics. Ok, I knew there were some problems with hdr settings and turned down bitrates for base users (is that really true?). I could live with that since I have Stadia for free.
Then I realized that I don’t have any hdr settings in base. I assume they are preset to on and you only can turn it off on pro, right? Would be still ok for me as a base user.
But here comes the deal breaker for me: The settings tell me that the game is running on 1080p60. But the framerate is really jerky. It felt like definitely below 30 fps.
I thought that this is another thing for base players : reduced fps. I didn’t play since pro ran out so I launched Destiny 2 and Farcry 5 (purchased) to compare and they ran fluently…Confusion… Also I launched rdr2 on my realme 5 pro phone and it was definitely running smooth 60fps.. More confusion…
I gave up and let Google refund the game. But I really missed it. So I bought again
to tweak around… but nothing helped ..
I also thought that it might be a hardware issue since it seem to run well in my phone. But D2 and Farcry 5 run well on the android tv box… It’s so weird that only this game signals me that I have a poor connection and that Stadia might disconnect anytime while all other games run normal. Also Stadia tells me on ist testsite that connection is optimal. As if RDR2 would run from a server from another end of the world…
Guys, what do you think? I just want to play just that one game. I also want to stick to my current hardware.
Here are the specs of the android box:
Mecool m8s Pro L Video codecs – VP9-10/ and H.265 up to 4Kx2K@60fps, H.264, WMV, MPEG-1/2/4, VC-1, AVS, and RealVideo up to1080p@60fps CPU – Amlogic S912 octa-core ARM Cortex A53 processor @up to 2.0GHz GPU – ARM Mali-820MP3 @ up to 750MHz OS – Android TV 7.1 Memory – 3GB DDR3 Video Output – HDMI 2.0a
I'm not sure about Android Box, is it a device certified on Google Play > Settings? Did you install Stadia from Play Store?
That device has no play protect certificate.
The stadia app is not sideloaded, it's from the Google Store.
I had RDR2 at PS4 Pro and bought it at Stadia.. Play mostly at my Phone (Xiaomi 9T).. The graphics and perfomance at stadia are way way better, never had fps drops as I had sometimes at PS4.. It is your hardware not stadia fault as it runs amazing well at mine
Yeah I’m afraid you’re right. Eventhough my hardware is pretty strong I think it’s an issue with the VP9 codec.
Btw on a small phone screen games will propably always appear smooth.
It’s weird that Stadia makes such a big deal of the vp9 / av1 exclusivity.
Sorry, but I have to say that Geforce Now is much more flexible with this issue. I am even able to play CP77 rtx on ultra settings on a simple fire tv stick 4k very smoothly.
I hope Stadia will allow more flexibility with the codecs…
