I want to have my Chromecast wired to my LAN for maximum connectivity, and I want to use a headset (headphones with mic) plugged into the Stadia controller for sound and chat.
Should this setup work? I haven't been able to get it working.
When I connect the Chromecast to my WIFI the headset works fine. When the Chromecast is plugged to LAN sound comes OK from the TV speakers, but not from the headset.
I digged a bit deeper and found the reason: All wired connections in my router were setup in bridge mode, as this is the best approach for PS4/XBONE to remove any NAT problems. This setup does not work with Stadia/Chromecast.
The Chromecast needs to be wired to an internal network that is same as the Wifi connection the controller has. I assume the Chromecast can only stream the audio to the controller inside a LAN. So by disabling bridge mode in my router for the Chromecast port I got this to work.

Thanks for this solution, I was about to RMA my controllers.
What port is it?
Had the same problem. It all started when I plugged lan cable directly to Chromecast (from my router). Before that, my Chromecast and controller were both connected via WiFi to a private connection from my Google WiFi ( different name provided by the router).
Now, instead of plugging Chromecast to my router I plugged it to Google WiFi, the controller is still with Google WiFi, and everything is working fine.
For me it never works, WIFI or plugged, headphones with and without microphone, Stadia always says "no microphone". And the Google Assistant only hears me when I speak right into the controllers microphone.
I also have the same issue.
I can hear audio including people talking, but my mic never works for chatting.
I am connected to the same same Wifi as my chromecast and am hardwired to my controller.
I've used my ps4 headset from turtle beach, and my Sony headset I use for conference calls all the time.
I've never been able to communicate.
Any thoughts stadia.
And don't send me to your Game Chat / Party chat wiki...its worthless for this problem. It doesn't even specify the issue i've seen posted that you can't be hardwired for you chromecast and still have audio that i've seen in other threads.
This is a problem on my chromecast and through my phone. Never used the broweser.
I just noticed this exact issue as my kids were trying to set up PubG between xbox and stadia. It works great, but the sound from the stadia controller is weird. You can hear the game, and hear the talking from other players, but the mic doesnt work. We tried several headsets, one no mic working at all, another high end one cause feedback when game audio setting was turned on, but no mic on party chat setting.
My Chromecast and controller are on the same network, although chromecast is connected via ethernet.
I dont get it. What is the problem?
I could probably connect via bluetooth to the TV as a work around, but would be nice to work first try.
This might be helpful, I changed the HDMI I connected the Chromecast Ultra to. After going through and trying to unbridged the Chromecast, changing lan plugs, connecting to my other wireless router, rebooting and resetting the ccu and the Stadia controller I had no success. I finally rebooted the modem. Still didn't work.
Then I remembered I had changed the HDMI plug the ccu was plugged into when I cleaned up the wiring to the back of my tv. And that's when it stopped working. I just didn't put the two things together.S I put it back to where it was (HDMI), and now it works.
My tv is a Vizio. It's connected ta stereo receiver via hdmi. It has a HDMI feature that works with the receiver that triggers the receiver to turn on. I believe the 2nd HDMI port I used is not part of that loop, but the original one is.
Hope this helps someone!
