Significant Lag/Poor Connectivity on Stadia (Destiny 2)

Jump to Best Response

Resolution: After trying every support mechanism on this forum, with Google wifi and stadia, as well as some helpful redditor suggestions, Google sent me a CCU replacement. The replacement works as well as my previous one used to. I did test my old CCU the same day I hooked up the new one. It lagged on the old CCU, and worked great on the new CCU. I have no idea what specifically the root cause it. I also added an ethernet switch as some suggested (I needed one anyway). It did not have an immediate impact either way. Set up is now Netgear Modem->Google Nest Router->Linksys Switch->CCU.

Hoping to get some help from the community. I have spent around 12 hours trying to troubleshoot this. The Stadia lag and connection is so bad, Destiny 2 has become essentially unplayable.

I purchased my Stadia Pro Bundle back in March 2020. I have been playing on a 4k LG CX using the CCU both with a direct ethernet connection and wifi. Up until about 7 days ago, I have enjoyed a very smooth and positive Stadia experience getting awesome gameplay with 4k resolution. I now can barely play any content, and specifically seems the worst with Destiny 2. I have made zero changes to my hardware, and unaware of any external changes to network settings. I have little knowledge outside of basic troubleshooting.

Setup: Xfinity ISP 200+ Down/5 Up, Netgear CM1100 Modem, Google Nest Wifi Router, LG CX TV, Chromecast Ultra (firmware 1.50.230474), Cat.5e cables. CCU is currently wired from ethernet port on nest wifi router. U.S. based in a major city (CONUS)

Settings when playing: Game Mode on, all LG TV AI features turned off, video smoothness off on CCU settings. My connection in Stadia shown poor to excellent, and still getting terrible lag whether I try 4k, or 1080P/720P when it says my network can't support 4k.

Troubleshooting to date:

--Called Xfinity to ensure no connectivity issues

--Worked with google support for my hub and netgear support for modem

--have done a full factory reset of CCU, Netgear Modem, and Google hub per tech support guidance (multiple times now). Spent about 90 min with google doing some minor trouble shooting in regards to network settings

----When I last reset my CCU I set it up only for wired network connection per a recommendation from another thread. No luck.

--tested internet speed on both wifi/wired connections on multiple devices.  Able to stream 4K Dolby Vision content (Final 30 min of Avenger's Endgame) from wired connection from google nest direct to LG TV

I spent about 2 hrs last night reading through reddit and community posts here. It's clear I am not the only one experiencing issues like this. As I said above, I have been playing with this same setup since August, and it was awesome. I didn't do anything special initially. I just plugged everything in, and that was it. I'm kind of at my wits end here, but I am willing to continue to troubleshoot. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. I posted the resolution above. I worked directly with Stadia support, and worked through multiple different network settings. Eventually they just sent me a new CCU and I'm currently golden. I did continue to test daily for almost 16 days, until the new CCU arrived, and that same day between both the old and new CCU.

@NovaCenturion

Can I ask. When you are having your lagging issues is there other people in your house streaming at the time? I have found recently if other people are streaming amazon prime or Netflix while I play then I am getting some lag aswell.

Thank you for your reply. No I have tested this dozens of different ways. We only have 1 television and typically when I play I am the only person using any meaningful bandwidth.  Laptops are usually in sleep mode, and we don't have a smart house or any other devices except for our mobile phones using bandwidth.  In the past though, even if my wife is watching netflix or working from her ipad or laptop it hasn't affected any of my stadia experience. I am leaning towards a CCU that is beginning to malfunction. Everything else I have tested performs as normal.

Been here since the start. In my experience the streams wildly fluctuate from day to day, even hour to hour. Using the controller wirelessly compounds the issue. Stadia simply can't make reliable connections all of the time. I believe it stems from a failure to scale, so you'll often be connected to servers that are too far or too many hops away for a stable stream, which gets worse when using the controller since the controller and the stream have to both make these connections reliably in tandem. My streams are the stablest when using the controller corded while streaming through PC. The Chromecast in my experience, wired or wireless is a crapshoot.

You're not alone, and Google is not going to help you. Feel free to search this forum, Google has yet to help a single person experiencing this, and that's because this is how Stadia works. There is no rhyme or reason as to when your stream will be reliable, which is the main reason the service is failing and Google is closing studios. The few that try it find out quickly it ain't worth sticking around.

This is vexing. I have almost an exact setup to yours and don't have problems like this at all. I play most of Stadia (and quite a bit of Destiny 2) via CCU over Wi-Fi, actually. The only time I would classify any major streaming issues similar to yours would be when I had a 2nd CCU in the garage but behind our woodstove on the other side of the wall (so concrete board and metal in the way). Once I moved the CCU about six feet over from there, that issue went away.

It does almost sound like a regional issue as someone suggested, that somehow Stadia is trying to connect you to servers too far away. Do you report issues with connectivity after trying a game session? I.E. the survey that shows up if you exit the game? (But not close Stadia; it doesn't always show up)

I'm sure you probably already tried some of these resources, but it never hurts to look again:

If you haven't engaged actual Stadia support, might betime to try that as well: https://support.google.com/stadia/gethelp?authuser=0
