Limited to 100 Mbps

Jump to Best Response

I understand the CCU wired connection is 100Mbps maximum. I have it currently connected that way but wonder if WiFi would be better as I have 5g WiFi and connection to ISP is 500Mbps.

Maybe Stadia won't use more than 100Mbps but it just kind of feels like CCU should have been USB C.

I think you could get better throughput over wifi but you will sacrifice latency and reliability for speed you don't need. The bandwidth requirements states 35Mbps or greater to get 4K. 100Mbps is more than enough and you get best ping and reliability of hardwired connection. But yeah, shipping a device in 2019 that is capped at 100Mbps over ethernet is.... well you know where I'm going with this...

The Chromecast Ultra never requires throughput over 100 Mbps, so this is sort of a moot point. I agree that shipping a product in 2019 with only Fast Ethernet instead of Gigabit Ethernet is questionable, but it is also largely irrelevant.

As for using Wi-Fi, that is not a wise decision if wired is available. Even if the throughput improves, the latency increases and the stability declines, which is inherent to wireless. Since the increased throughput is irrelevant as no stream is using over 100 Mbps, what are you achieving?

Totally valid points. Glad it makes no difference, which given the speed needed for an "excellent" connection I didn't think it would.

I know this is a very old post lol but wouldn't wifi be better now since the controllers connect directly to the servers now through wifi?

Hi @Rickard,

No the best thing still is connect your CCU to Ethernet as it is more stable than WiFi.
The same device is providing the WiFi as the LAN (most of the time).

Less WiFi devices is also a possible more stable WiFi signal. :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:
