Frame drops on chromecast ultra with wired connection

Hey people,

Just bought a stadia with the cyberpunk deal. As I’m playing I’m experiencing frame drops. This happens on both Destiny 2 and Cyberpunk. This happens regularly.

Some basic information:

  • I haven’t activated my Stadia Pro account
  • I’m playing on chromecast ultra on TV
  • my connection is 100/10 mbit/s
  • I’m using an older router: Asus RT-AC51u. However the chromecast is connected through a CAT 5e cable to the router.
  • Cables are all either Cat 5, 5e or 6
  • im playing cyberpunk on performance visuals

I can’t figure out if this is a problem with the router but I doubt it since my wife is streaming media at the same time and I’m still getting 45mbit/s down and 9,6 up with 0.6 ping on my phone while running a game on the chromecast.

any ideas what is causing this?

thanks In advance!

Hello @Klihm

Does this happen when there isn't any other video streaming going on while you are playing? Things like Netflix streaming are not continuous streams – they "burst" download a big chunk of audio+video to the client, which buffers it to play back for awhile (a few seconds, typically) before fetching another chunk. This makes those streams much more tolerant of issues with the network, since it gives them more time to recover from packet losses (for example). Stadia can't do that – it needs to get a very steady stream of audio+video data, since you can't have any delays. So, on a more limited connection, you can get some glitches in the Stadia playback every time a Netflix-like bursty video stream pulls another chunk, even though the average capacity is still fine. You may be able to limit the impact of this by dropping the Stadia resolution down (from 4K to 1080p, or 1080p to 720p) to see if it helps.

Now, if this is happening when there isn't any bursty video stream running, then I'd look more closely into the network itself. One thing you might try as part of this would be adding an inexpensive (unmanaged) Ethernet switch in between the Chromecast Ultra and the router. I don't think that should be necessary, but I have seen it help with some other routers.

Why not Zoidberg?
