Does Chromecast Ultra get really, really hot?

Jump to Best Response

I bought Stadia premier edition 2-3 months ago and played Stadia for like 2 hours total (maybe less) with that. I never really paid attention to the Chromecast ultra that came with it until today. Turns out that the Chromecast Ultra can get really, really hot (like you can literally fry an egg hot or it is so hot that I cannot hold it with my hands) when it has been ON for like 10 minutes. Is that normal? If not, is there Google support dedicated for Stadia?

Right now, I unplugged the Chromecast ultra to make sure it doesn't burn into my TV's plastic frame or anything like that.

Hello @plartoo

The CCU definitely does run hot. It shouldn't be dangerously hot, though. If playing video through it (e.g., streaming something like Netflix or playing Stadia) works properly, it isn't getting too hot. Do make sure it's in a well-ventilated area, though. It sounds like you're not using it for Stadia or much of anything else right now, though, so unplugging it makes sense – no point turning electricity into heat if you aren't using it.

Thank you, John. It really surprised me as well. If the temperature is very high when I'm not even using it actively, I wonder if it'll get much hotter when I'm playing Stadia. In case you know, does Google TV with Chromecast also get hot like that? I'm thinking of buying one, but given what I noticed with Chromecast Ultra, I will probably stay away from that.

Hello @plartoo

The CCU was designed quite a long time ago (2016, which is ancient in semiconductor years). The CCwGTV is much newer (2020). So, it should run cooler in general. That said, I did find some reports of overheating. But, it doesn't appear to be consistent (unlike the CCU, which all seem to run hot). Some CCwGTV units run hot. That could be a manufacturing issue (improper thermal paste application) or a firmware issue. At this point, they've been making them awhile, so I would hope both of those types of issues would be sorted. It is inexpensive and gets very good reviews. So, I'd say if you're in the market for something like this, it's a good option. Worst case, keep the packaging and the receipt and send it back if you're unhappy with it.

Thank you for sharing what you know about CCwGTV. I'll keep that in mind as I do more research before purchasing CCwGTV.

@JohnZoidberg is quite the expert and nailed it out of the park with this one!  I had the same issue with multiple CCUs but not at all with the CCwGTV. I enjoy the CCwGTV so much, I've decided to replace all my CCUs with them.
