Chromecast ultra burning hot to the touch

My brand new chrome cast that came with my stadia is burning hot to the touch. Also... I think it’s overheating and causing the random disconnects. Anybody experiencing this issue?

Yup, but google claims they've done tons of testing and they have not experience any heating issues, it's the answer they gave on reddit but there is a lot of people getting literally burnt by this.

https://www.amazon.com/Stream-Cooler-Round-Stuttering-overheating/dp/B076DN1WX8/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=...    that is the current solution since it appears its our fault and no googles in giving us something that has for years had issues with  becoming lava.

Gaming excessive and long game sessions is going to toast some chromecast.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB4UldlJPFw&feature=youtu.be he opens up the inside of it and you can see why a few of them are having issues.

take note he replaced the thermal compound

I'm not sure why there aren't more responses to this thread.  This wasn't something i was aware of but after hearing of this, I walked over to the chromecast just to check on it and it was HOT man....Like super hot.  My gameplay didn't stop.  I had played for about 3 or 4 hours straight and that thing was scalding.  I guess as long as it doesn't burn out or catch my apartment on fire, I don't care. lol

you'll find a scripted response a lot of users are using on reddit, "it's fine so and so is made to be under immense heat, touching it will be hot but everything is fine". I just roll my eyes to that response because anyone knows with long sessions of gaming a repeated gaming that the heat is going to eventually become an issue. It'll cause resetting, freezing, and more simply replacing it with another chromecast won't do anything either since it's a design flaw google refuses to change.

one search about chromecast and you'll see this issue has been something that has been talked about for years now and the only solution you'd get? is from other users posting MODs. it's flipping crazy how they are brushing this off.

I can't touch my Chromecast after an hour of gaming, but I'm not experiencing rebooting issues at all...

that is a great test you should see how high it goes after 5 hours which is the usual burnout time people say they experience the worse stuff

I just had mine on for maybe 10 minutes using pro HDR and 4k in destiny 2 and it was almost unplayable. The CCU was VERY hot to the touch.

My Chromecast is also getting extremely hot. I haven't had any crashes or connection problems yet. But now I'm worried that the heat won't do the OLed TV and/or the HDMI ports any good.

My CCU would overheat and freeze between 30 mins and 1 hour. This was over WiFi. After I connected it direct to ethernet mine still gets hot too but no longer freezes. I only tested it for 2 hours though. Pretty ridiculous and very disappointing. They should've taken extra time and made sure their product actually worked before releasing it.

The "mod" in a comment above seemed like it was just taped to the top of the CCU. If that's the case hold my beer real quick I got this.

Seriously though it is strange for them to just find a solution rather than these oddball mods

Mine gets ridiculously hot too.... but I found it's not just when playing, it's when its plugged in...so I dont think it has to do with stadia I think it has to do with the power supply etc....they need to put a fan or something in it hahaha

I also had these issues and even freezes when playing. But as soon as i switched the Chromecast from WiFi to Ethernet Stadia runs stable, but the Chromecast is still hot.

Ah that's a good point, my measurement was taken while playing over Ethernet

I see that Xbox one x could be 70c/157f behind where the vent is and that is normal.

I have seen this overheat discussion around now about the cromecast ultra, is it a problem with all cromecast or is it normal?

How hot could it be before it start to cause damage? Having a stadia premiere edition on the way and i cant wait to try it out :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes mine is always hot! I've used a wired & unwired connection which still is hot. The only thing that works is unplugging the power source. Even when not in use it's still hot & have had to put it in my Air-conditioning vents for 9 minutes during my gameplay for it to cool down before the 10 minute mark of timing out the paused gameplay. Whenever it gets especially hot the game session is of course lagging, but never had an issue of lag with wifi tho.

I’ll quickly chirp in and on a few occasions I think my CCU has shut down due to overheating. Albeit it was during playing a lengthy 5 session of Zombie Army 4 @ 1080p.
It is hot to the touch most of the time but only a few times it’s disconnected.
There’s all sorts of hacking a cooler by using thermal pads and a bit of heat sink out there lol
Personally I wouldn’t mess about with my CCU.
Best we can maybe hope for is a v2 CCU arriving!

Yes it gets hot even if it is just plugged in to the power source, even without playing. I feel Google should do something about this.

I start to think about buying a small USB fan.. especially for the summer!

I did this, but it only helps (a bit) if placed very near. Not very easy with the CCU hanging in mid air behind TV..
I will also need to add heatsinks!

I'm not happy at all and will quit Stadia over the summer..

Do you know what is silicon lottery? I guess all Chromecasts run very hot and they will not last for long time. Especially if you got a bad draw from the silicon lottery... Your piece of equipment should perform fine but it will get even hotter than the average and probably cause some issues. Of course Google will never admit there is something wrong with it. It's their policy and 3 out of 3 times I had to report a certain bug issue to Google just so they know for furture updates, it was always my fault hahaha. However The simplest solution for Chromecasts is to buy those very cheap heatsinks for Raspberry pi. They range from 5 to 15 bucks for a pack of them. They come with thermal sticker at the bottom. Just stick a few on both sides of your Chromecasts and you will definitely see a difference. Mine gets very very hot, probably you can slowly boil an egg in it although I didn't have any issues yet. Still I put some heatsinks on it because this poor think won't last a year running so hot. Even if the electronics may be fine with this temperature, it will eventually wear out the plastics and possible thermal compound inside will just get "spilled" on the sides of the pressure point.

I also began to wonder if my mid game skips and lags are contributed by the overheating of the CCU. I monitor my Stadia sessions now with Wireshark and notice during skips and lags the Stadia server is still talking "normally" to my CCU. Meantime, I checked that my network is good. So I found a couple of heatsink from my old PC motherboards and sandwich my CCU in between, will keep eyes on this for any improvement or not.

Great idea.

I attached some heatsinks just to the plastic shell of my CCU some months ago. Helps greatly.

Please share your results as well :slightly_smiling_face:

I have the same issue. Burning hot. But mine stays extremely hot overnight and will never go into standbye mode even if the TV is off for hours. They should atleast do a standbye mode soon after the tv is off. Or are you still playing or watching question. Going into deep standbye only for people reconnecting. I havent done a test to see the power use while in standbye, will try that next but its really annoying that it stays on and burning hot even the next day, seen this multiple times now. So i just pull the wall charger to be safe and reduce power.

And yes i also log out of stadia each time. It still stays on forever. Not that smart a device.

My wifi connection between the Chromecast and stadia controller disconnects when the Chromecast gets hot - every single time and only when it gets hot. the lack of responsibility on behalf of Chromecast /google...my infant has more responsibility.

I've tried to contact them...far too many times and their mantra was - "It must be your connection."

...really?

My high-speed fiber-optic network that I pay good money for is why their Chromecast gets hot? Did their engineers actually go to school or get their cert from a cracker-hack box? I am thinking about going back to Playstation... because after dealing with a stressful work day - is killing aliens and monsters too much to ask for?

We feel your pain!

Mine still gets very hot and I’m still playing at 1080p.
When Stadia is working I still marvel at its technological step towards cloud gaming and I like to give credit where it’s due.
I don’t know if you know but Stadia is now a native app on the new Google TV Chromecast with remote control. It’s getting a decent reception so it maybe worth picking one up when in sale?
I know that’s not fair in respect of purchasing the Stadia with CCU originally and it should work. I’m totally on your side as I’ve has my issues too.
I’m fortunate that this month I can finally afford to purchase an nVidia Shield Pro so the overheating issue should no longer get in the road of my Stadia sessions. Again the stadia app is now native on Shield so that’s a plus. I also have a fibre connection with a decent ping so hopefully combined with the Gigabit Ethernet port on the Shield Pro my experience will be more stable than it has up until now. To be fair to Google though I really do like the service and I find it impossible to forgo my monthly subscription and evergrowing Pro library!!!!
I have a PS5 and yet I still think it’s great to just pick up that Stadia controller and hit the button and get launched straight into any game.
Apologies for slight off topic there! As suggested there is an option to stick on tiny self adhesive Raspberry Pi4 copper heat sinks in conjunction with a small USB fan to blow some air across the CCU may well help?? Perhaps £15-20 ( $20) if purchasing new hardware isn’t an option.
