Using existing Chromecast Ultra devices

Hi everybody,

A reminder that most existing (not-bundled) Chromecast devices will not support Stadia until they're updated over the next few weeks. You can check if your Chromecast Ultra can run Stadia by checking if it's running version 1.42.180348 or above. If your Chromecast is not on that version, attempting to play games on that Chromecast will fail until it receives the upcoming Stadia update. For now, we recommend using the Chromecast Ultra in your bundle to play.

My existing Chromecast Ultra has the 1.42.18348 firmware on it, and I can confirm that it does play Stadia!

@Hyawatta, how did you get that version on a non-Founders Edition Chromecast? Are you using a preview build in settings?

Yes, I turned on the option to receive the preview builds.

Spent far too much time trying to play with my existing chromecast ultra. There should have been a warning in the box or have programmed into the app to run a check on the firmware version!

For me it was the Chromecast version. Hope it fixes for the others.

I did the same. I have 3 of them around the house and was losing my mind why it wasn't working. Haha.

Just releasing the update beforehand would have been good. Plus it would have been something to have done whilst waiting for launch.

Indeed, something in the app to identify the version and notify to say that it is before a specific version would have been nice.

Lessons learned..

Is there a timeline for when we can expect other Chromecast devices to support Stadia, including Gen 2, 3, and those built in to Android TV?

Hey @GraceFromGoogle overheating seems to be developing into a huge issue with a few minutes of game play, locking, resetting, and persistently seems to be developing into something worse.

Someone on the Reddit group for Stadia mentioned he was able to update his CCU and play Stadia on it and left instructions on how to do so. I'm not endorsing doing it since idk if it's breaking any Google rules to do so. But I'm just saying it exists.

@Dinn The method is basically opting for the preview program. It's definitely not breaking any Google rules and safe to do so.

Hi, I have the founders edition and just purchased a second chromecast ultra for downstairs. It’s currently in preview mode running 1.42.183786. This is a newer version than my Stadia CCU but I am unable to see the stadia controller code to link my controller. Can anyone provide any guidance? How can I play stadia on my second CCU? thanks, Alan

Open the Google home app, go to your device and select it. In the upper right hand corner next to the gear wheel, select the three dots, select Ambient mode settings, scroll to bottom and select "show" under stadia controller linking code

Thanks for posting. I have the same problem. Given my TV configuration its not practical to move my Chromecast from room to room, hence the second CC Ultra

Hello @GraceFromGoogle, I am looking for some guidance here. I bought and used The Founder’s edition in the USA. I have since moved to Germany (and travel a significant amount which is what interested me in Stadia). Unfortunately in the move I lost the Chromecast Ultra that was originally shipped to my USA address. Now that I am in Germany, which Chromecast Ultra should I be using? Is one even available seeing as I purchased the Founder’s Edition? Any direction, URL, and/or replacement help is greatly appreciated.

The new Vizio TVs will coming out in just a few weeks.  Is there any chance that the built-in Chromecast Ultras in these TVs will be Stadia-ready?   If not, does Google have a plan for this?

I'm trying to determine what game platform I want to build on.  The XBOX supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and has bluray player - my existing LG player is getting loud and will likely die soon.  Changing out its HDMI for an Xbox will keep my number of devices the same and I get real Atmos.  With Stadia, I may have to buy a Chromecast Ultra when one is already built-in to the TV (just asinine to me!), no word on Atmos (I'll likely have to upscale 5.1), and no blu-ray player.

Yes, Stadia has some advantages.  I like it.  But when can we expect such simple stuff as firmware updates?  Stadia has been years in the making.  Surely the chromecast devices and firmware you license to third parties would have Stadia support by now.  If they don't, then I would assume greedy motives or incompetence, and neither is going to make me buy into a system.

So ... Vizio Chromecast for the H models released soon?  Dolby Atmos support?

How do I check which version my chromecast ultra is running on? It's from founders edition.

Looked everywhere, also on the 4k hdr tv in stadia menu's. Can't find anything.

Is this the not functional one? HDR and 4k doesn't function on pro account.

Hi @SilverOwly -- if you are unable to achieve HDR and 4K with your Chromecast Ultra, it could be for a number of reasons:

  1. 4K/HDR/5.1 are features exclusive to Stadia Pro, so if you are not currently subscribed, that is the answer
  2. Your connection is unstable and/or insufficient to achieve 4K. In this case, please check that your connection is strong and capable of supporting 4K. If on wireless, being close to the access point would help.
  3. Your Chromecast Ultra may be malfunctioning. If you have exhausted all other options, reach out to our Support Team and request additional guidance.

Hope this helps!
