VP9 vs H264 issue? - Mouse input seems queued and/or extremely laggy

Hello,

I'm having a severe amount of mouse input lag, not the kind where the mouse just seems to drag behind, but Stadia seems to capture all mouse movements, wait until I stop moving the mouse and then play them all back. It's also possible this is happening in my OS somewhere.

It's also worth noting that I didn't have this problem a few weeks ago. Something changed recently, not sure if it was an OS update, chrome update, stadia update etc.

I am on MacOS Big Sur 11.0.1. Location services is disabled. Hardware is a Macbook air, of the latest generation. It's not beefy.. but it's played Stadia just fine in the past.

I've tried chrome and chrome canary, hardware accelerating enabled on both.

I've also installed the Stadia + extension.. to try and force H.264, but that feature seems to no longer work, as VP9 always remains in the monitor and I don't get a message telling me to refresh the page.

I've also disabled mouse acceleration in the OS.

None of these things made any difference.

Probably worth nothing that outside of mouse, performance is fantastic, any input that comes from the keyboard is just fine, no lag, if it's a camera rotation it performs great.. FPS is fantastic. The only issue is mouse input.

I assume this has to do with the VP9 codec rather than H264.  I tried out Nvidia's product to test it out, it uses H264 and worked fantastic.

Is there any way to get Stadia to do H264 again?

Search for Stadia + extension in Chrome. There you can force H264.

Unfortunately Stadia+ forcing of H264 is currently broken. The devs are working on it, but it's not fixed yet.

Hi @Jantix, are you able to test on other environments? For example, have you tried on an incognito session? It would also be helpful if you can test on another computer, if possible. This will help us rule out your local machine as the source.

Hi @ChrisFromGoogle  thanks for responding!

I've tried incognito, it's no better. Chrome Canary with VP9 forced to hardware acceleration is slightly better... still unplayable though.

I went ahead and bootcamped my laptop, on Windows, everything works beautifully with the same hardware. I get more graphical degrading, but the performance stays perfect.

Funny enough nvida's service works perfectly on OSX on this machine.. not that it means much since it's likely not apples to apples.

It really feels like this is Stadia selecting VP9 and it not using hardware acceleration properly.. I don't know if that's Stadia, Chrome or the OS's problem. If there was a way to force H264.. I would be able to test for sure but I can't get it to do anything other than VP9.

localStorage keys look like...

 video_codec_implementation_by_codec_key: "{"h264":"ExternalDecoder","vp9":"libvpx","vp9-profile0":"ExternalDecoder"}"

the vp9-profile0 thing seems to be new? I haven't seen that before.. performance hasn't seemed to improve though.

Try also the Stadia Enhanced extension.

Don't know the current status of Stadia+, but I stopped using it exactly from this reason (problems with forcing H264).

Thanks! I've tried Stadia Enhanced, it does work forcing h264.

With the latest version of Big Sur, VP9 also seems to be working MUCH better. So, both problems are solved at once lol.

Still, performance is significantly better on Windows, on the same computer.. so if I want to play for a long session, I'm still switching to bootcamp/windows.

Edit - To be clear, my initial problem seems to have been rooted in the OS, not in Stadia or Chrome.. unless chrome updated at the same time as Big Sur.. but anyway, much better with the latest versions of everything.
