@davidking : Awesome post/link, I especially like the stream monitor script, works really nice!  Thanks.

Kudos appreciated if deserved.

Chrome already uses VP9 with Stadia, you can see for yourself on chrome://media-internals

It's also the standard on YouTube for quite some time now.

@Valynor You can see from that topic I linked to and the one below thatโ€™s its not defaulting to VP9 for a fair few users: https://www.reddit.com/r/Stadia/comments/eimw7/tampermonkey_monitor_your_stream/

As far as I remember from the WebRTC/Stadia tech video from Google, Stadia is based on the VP9 codec (and targetting AV1 in the future).

You're right, but it seems like they may be using H.264 as a fallback for sorts. Stadia was definitely using H.264 for me until I reinstalled Chrome.

Thanks for the info. Is it also possible to increase the resolution?

@Avrila No unfortunately not, seems Chrome is limited to 1080p at the moment.

Thank you for this great thread. Really enjoying Stadia when I can find time.

We are trying to use Chrome for WebRTC communication and are hitting these same limitations on resolution and codec.

Is there another forum where we could bring these tips/learnings, and how they would apply to WebRTC ?

Thank you!

You can just use "Stadia plus" Extension for Chrome to force VP9 with one click and 4K mode, too (if you are pro member)

You can just install Stadia+ chrome extension and this will do it for you, over other stuff.
