Stadia performance issue 2/2.

Jump to Best Response

Hello everyone,

I've made a post a few weeks ago about Stadia performance issues that has been temporarily solved by uninstalling Kaspersky. After several tests, it seems like it was a pure coincidence.

You can find the previous post here (with my full configuration) : https://community.stadia.com/t5/Stadia-on-Chrome/Stadia-performance-issue/m-p/53502#M3375

I've made new tests using the Stadia Enhancement Addons and it seems like my problems came from the Decoding Time that is too high.

A little reminder of my config :

  • AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 6 core
  • RAM 16 Go
  • RTX 2070 Super

Here is what the addon show for H264 :

When the game start the Decoding Time is near 8ms and continue to grow to reach 20ms. Using VP9 :

I need your help, anything that you know about Decoding time to solve this incident. :slightly_smiling_face:

As the addon show, it's Hardware H264 / Hardware VP9. I wonder if Google Chrome doesn't try to use my CPU to do the GPU stuff here. I know it can happen for some application / game (like Skyrim that try to start using my CPU, needed to force it through the Nvidia Panel to use my GC).

If you need information or if you need me to do some tests, don't hesitate !

EDIT : FYI, I'm not experiencing any input lags, it really doesn't seems to be from my network, neither from my hardware, it must be a configuration somewhere.

EDIT 2 : If you know a way to reduce Stadia FPS, I think this would be a good test to try at 30 FPS.

Hello Barthandelus,

Could you go into Chrome, navigate to "chrome://gpu" and search for "VP9" under Video Acceleration Information and send a screenshot of that section. It'll look something like this:

Hello,

Thanx for you answer.

Seems like it's exactly the same.

Another information as I did continue to do some tests, here is the result I reached :

STADIA-3.png

No input lag, no pixelisation of the video, everything is perfect.

So I think I did found the problem (I hope so).

FYI I tried with hardware acceleration off and I was at 4ms Decoding Time. I putted back hardware acceleration and then came to this result.

That's here I understand what happened. Each tab I had opened in Google Chrome add around 1-4ms of Decoding Time. Even with chrome.exe opened 2 times, this thing happens.

I tried using Google Chrome with 5 tabs opened and another Google Chrome opened using the "-incognito" feature and it seems to work : Now I have less than 2ms of Decoding Time.

I'm pretty sad that the only way to get Stadia working is to use another browser (From now, I'll use Opera with as much tabs as I need) and Google Chrome with only 1 tab : Stadia.

At this moment, my incident is solved but I hope Google will do something about it.

Another tips :

  • For Controller-based gameplay(Ex: Assassin's Creed Valhalla) I'm starting chrome.exe using a shortcut on my Desktop : "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-gpu-vsync --disable-frame-rate-limit
    • It actually nullified my input lag. It's like if the game was running on my computer directly. That's perfect !
  • For Keyboard/Mouse gameplay (Ex: Cyberpunk 2077) I'm starting chrome.exe normally as I have an incident when using the previous options : My character camera (FPS) make some "teleport" in the future that I can't explain. I have a very little input lag (less than 0.3s, I think), but that's not a problem.

If you have another information on how to upgrade Decoding Time / use Chrome with more than 1 tab, don't hesitate, it could always help someone !

I'm not too familiar with decoding stuff, but I can tell you it's not possible to reduce the FPS the stream sends you. It'll always target 60 for better performance.
