Stadia issue spikes

Hi, I have been gaming on Stadia for around a year now, I usually had some slight mouse stutters but during the last 3-4 months things have gotten out of control. Whenever I play I will have huge latency spikes or half a second before it goes back to 6-12ms, sometimes these lag spikes will go up to 800ms before going back down. I play on a Chromebook but I have tried other devices to no avail and a whole 8 different networks in varying parts of the country (Sweden). I contacted official support and exchanged a total of 26 email with them while also having spent some time in the live chat. Through my extensive testing I have managed to play a few times by changing wifi channels but it was only for a few minutes before the problems came back. Changing resolution does nothing and whether I have 50 tabs open or only 1 there is no change, I have also gotten progressively more mouse stutters and inputs not registering. I feel at a loss on what to do as I do not have these problems with Xcloud nor GeforceNow but due to financial reasons I have Stadia as my primary service.

I have tried basically every troubleshooting step that official support offers except for ethernet as I do not have the option of doing so.

Hi @SouthPenguinJay

In my case, I have a better experience with an Ethernet cable due to the interference in my place. Did you see any issues with different browser or Chrome Canary?

I have tried an ethernet cable now with zero change in quality. @AndroiFy

@SouthPenguinJay just want to check, does the issue happen with a particular game, or is it affecting all games?

I know you said that you've tried all troubleshooting steps and also work with support, but I want to point you to this help article for troubleshooting Stadia experience. It might be worth to quickly review and just in case there are troubleshooting steps you haven't tried:

There is nothing I've missed on the link unfortunately, the only thing that I cannot try is Ethernet, due to monetary reasons. I have a problem with all games, but Jedi fallen order is significantly less bad. My main games are Destiny 2 and Terraria so them not working is quite the problem. I have also tried elder scrolls online which has the same issue as previously described.

@SouthPenguinJay For Destiny 2 I've always had mouse stutters. I can't play Destiny 2 on Stadia unless I use a controller, and this performance issue is even mentioned in one of Bungie's article . I don't have experience with the other two games though.

What's confusing is that you didn't use to have this issue before, so it makes me think that there maybe some changes on how internet traffic is being regulated in Sweden. It may sound farfetched but I used to live in a country (Indonesia) where suddenly you will lose access to Steam just because government regulation (happened recently).

Have you tried disabling extensions? Even with Incognito mode, some extensions may still be on. Or try another Chromium based browser like Edge and see if you're getting the same issue. Just want to make sure the browser is not the problem.

I have now installed and tried using microsoft edge where it was a constant stream of "game might stop" even on startup. I have tried incognito a few times on chrome it has not helped either @Ivan .

@Blackgem I have tried using my mobile data (4G) before but it also has this "latency spike" issue unfortunately, along with being just generally weak of course. I also have the stadia enhanced extension which is where I have been getting a lot of my stats, I've tried uninstalling it as well. Another thing I have tried besides other devices is factory resetting my chromebook but it did not help. Mouse acceleration changes nothing when changed in my settings. In regards to touchpad I'm not even sure how to access the touch controls.

I have a case ID and a zipfile of some videos if that helps with showing my issues, I just don't know how to post said zip files on the forum, they are in the stadia discord though.

The videos could be uploaded to YouTube directly. The files to Drive or other services. Even so, I would continue looking at other topics, ask for a network adapter, etc.

you mention that it is a chromebook but you have installed another browser..., through the play store or have you formatted it to install Windows?, if so, you are using it in a way for which it was not possibly designed and it is already a wide variety of hardware that you have not specified.

Here's one of the videos, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3aKd64_9sY&t=776s

@Blackgem I have looked at dozens of posts about stadia issues but found no solutions, and as mentioned before Official support had none either.

I decided to install microsoft edge on Linux after Ivan mentioned it but it worked a lot worse than google chrome.

@SouthPenguinJay I feel like you've almost exhaust all options here. I'm almost convinced that there's something that changed with regards to network traffic in Sweden. Or maybe there's something changed from the data center that's hosting Stadia. My only suggestion would be to keep trying different devices, network, disabling extensions, try different browser, and see if anything changes. Other than that, I'm not quite sure what else to suggest.

I know you've tried Chromebook and Linux. What other devices have you tried so far?

My chromebook on google chrome and microsoft edge. I have also tried stadia on an iphone 7 (safari), a laptop running windows and a stationary pc also running windows. they all used to work decently-great up until when I started having problems and they all had the same problem afterwards.

Also try in incognito mode. Try using your mobile's 4G network instead of your company's Wi-Fi.
Install the Stadia Enhanced extension and debug it in case you see something that catches your attention (you can also force extra things in it), I had a case, for example, that with the integrated intel it went much better than with a much more powerful dedicated one nvidia on the decoding issue.
Check if you can disable mouse acceleration, and also test if using the touchpad (for testing only) you also notice the same problem.
