Chrome on old MacBook

Hi, I’ve just got my access code, however when I try and update chrome to play Stadia on my old MacBook, there doesn’t appear to be an update? Does anyone else have this issue? Also I don’t think I can update the OS for the MacBook, having checked the software updates available. I’m thinking I need a newer device / new chrome to be able to play Stadia.

@xquadersx :

Which version of Chrome are you running, this information should be available from the Chrome menu (top left) and then selecting About Google Chrome, also which version of Mac OS are you running too.

Kudos appreciated if deserved.

@TheBartok That's the exact same version I have on my Windows 10 PC. Are you having trouble launching Stadia?

My guess is some of your Chrome extensions are the issue. Can you try opening Stadia from Incognito window?

@xquadersx What's your current Chrome version?

@Ivan: Yes I tried to reset chrome (which also includes disabling plugins) and playing incognito...I tried to use google canarian, but I still have the same problem. Apple does not support the ipv9 format, could this be the problem? however this would become a problem for any mac?

Hi @Ivan I’m not sure, didn’t check tbh, as I got a new chromebook and it works lovely now. Though, I’m still waiting for my controller and chromecast... Thanks for the help though.

A 2010 CPU is very likely not powerful enough to decode a 1080p60 VP9 stream in software.

This is Stadia's official requirements page: https://support.google.com/stadia/answer/9338852?hl=en-CA

For "On a computer" it mentions "The iOS version requires a mobile device running iOS 11.0 or greater".

Unfortunately, it does not mention anything about macOS requirements. However, refer to this site: https://www.pcgamebenchmark.com/google-stadia-system-requirements

It mentions the requirement as "OS X Yosemite 10.10 and higher". I have no idea where this is sourced from, but it lines up with the year of the referenced iOS version, 2017.

In short, I suspect there may be a requirement that macOS be newer than what some of these old devices have, but I do not know for sure and can only go by this small bit of research.

I think our old gpu do not support hardware encoding of the vp9 codec

You need an Intel 8th gen CPU for the hardware VP9 decoder.

I have problems on my 2012 MacBook Pro i7 512GB SSD.. Now really limited to 32GB.. I can't access most of the harddrive as I partitioned it off long ago. I also have a windows 10 HP that gives me the same issue. It goes slow, then jumps to real time and rinse and repeat. The sound is always real-time though. I tried with my work computer, and it works flawlessly. After many tweaks and what not. I think old computers are not running the stadia as designed. Hopefully there's a fix in the near future for our archaic devices.

There are no magic fixes for old technology. Stadia will eventually move from VP9 to the AV1 codec which needs even more processing power to decode.

The solution is to buy new hardware.

HI @ecin

I've tried running Stadia on my older MBPr, which is late-2013 model, Intel i7 2.3GHz, 16Gb DDR3 RAM. It has High Sierra installed and has no real issues. It may be that your machine is just that little bit older (there's got to be a cut-off at some point on the timeline i guess!) but thought it was worth mentioning in case there's a solution just out of reach....

Good luck!

Mine is late-2013 too:

3,4 GHz Intel Core i5

8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2 GB

But I have those issues commented by the op. In the chromecast I have no problem. Stadia goes perfect. But in the iMac it doesn't goes well. I reinstalled chrome. In fact I formatted the HD and reinstalled Catalina. Same results. It just simply doesn't work in this Mac. Google promises that stadia will be playable in old devices, but it seems incorrect.

And i don´t know if it's a hardware problem. I mean, I´ve tried in my work laptop (windows i5, 2.3 GHz, 8GB RAM) with no dedicated graphic card, and three years old) and stadia goes well. My Mac is more powerful than this laptop and goes worse. I just don't understand.

Which version of Chrome are you going for walks, this facts have to be to be had from the Chrome menu (pinnacle left) and then choosing the cosplay About Google Chrome, also which version of Mac OS are you walking too.
