4k on Intel HD 620

Jump to Best Response

I normally play Stadia on my main workstation but I have a Lenovo T570 floating around I am trying to use in a different room. It has an i5-7300U / HD620 which should decode VP9 at 4k without an issue. I constantly get network reported issues when trying to launch a game but speed tests from Stadia and other sources are fine. Both the laptop and workstation are connected to the same switch (Tried wireless also). Time of day doesn't matter. I am convinced there is an issue with the laptop or something I am blatantly missing but cant figure out what. Anyone have a similar experience and have any tips or know for sure if the Intel 620 is capable of decoding VP9 without issue?

Fresh install of Windows 10 all latest drivers. Did not sync anything. Tried with Chrome and Edge same problem.

Thanks!

Hi @Cryogen,

You can check if your Lenovo has VP9 GPU support by checking this within Chrome.

VP9 hardware decoding

To check if your computer supports VP9 hardware decoding:

  1. In your Google Chrome address bar, type chrome://gpu and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down to "Video Acceleration Information".
  3. If you see "Decode vp9", your computer supports VP9 hardware decoding.

If you want to use VP9 without hardware acceleration you try forcing VP9 using a unofficial plugin like Stadia Enhanced.

It shows

Decode h264 baseline64x64 to 4096x4096 pixels
Decode h264 main64x64 to 4096x4096 pixels
Decode h264 high64x64 to 4096x4096 pixels
Decode vp9 profile064x64 to 8192x8192 pixels
Decode vp9 profile264x64 to 8192x8192 pixels
Encode h264 baseline0x0 to 1920x1088 pixels, and/or 30.000 fps
Encode h264 main0x0 to 1920x1088 pixels, and/or 30.000 fps
Encode h264 high0x0 to 1920x1088 pixels, and/or 30.000 fps

No issues with Youtube 4k VP9 videos checking stats for nerds (I completely understand videos are not equal to Stadia just stating it does decode VP9 in hardware). Stadia on the other hand maxed out the 3D section of task manager performance while Youtube does not but does elevate the decode portion as one would expect. Close to buying something new so if its not against the rules I am willing to provide a reward for a resolution.
