Recently started a Stadia premiere trial to test it out. My laptop supports 4k, and also checked the vp9 setting. However, Stadia shows me it's not supported? Contacted support and they've advised my to contact the manufacturer? Is the kind of support I can expect?
The reason for this is when I remove the power adaptor the 4k option becomes available, but only for a few seconds, then goes back to 1080p again. Therefore, support thinks it has something with a local power surge?? (power schemes are both set to high performance). The same happens when you open the stadia page for the first time; first few seconds its 4k and then it automatically jumps back to 1080p.
Why isn't possible to simply select the 4k option since the auto-detection seems to be buggy? At least show a message with the issue and perhaps a solution (not a link to a support article, this is 2020). Even better, provide user with a diagnostic tool that can be used for troubleshooting and that's able to generate a report for support containing all the technical system details. Had to provide support with all the technical details, this is not something you can expect from non-technical users.
Tried several things:
- removed plug-ins
- verified bandwidth, around 100mbps
- reinstalled Chrome
- checked power settings
- firmware upgrade
- driver upgrade
EDIT: Solved the issue by using Edge Chromium. I'm pretty happy with the performance and it has a lot of potential, but please release a diagnostic tool or an optimization tool that automatically checks the system, gives tips on how to optimize certain Google settings and so on. This will help the non-technical users and adaption.
This sounds like you have a laptop that uses both discrete and integrated GPUs and switches them according to power plan.
In one case when it's plugged in it's using the GPU that does NOT support VP9, and in the other case it is using the GPU that does.
Check your GPU power settings for things along these lines. It could be that your discrete GPU is not capable of VP9 but your integrated one is. Sometimes power plans for which GPU to use are granular to the application so it could be set one way for Chrome that is not applying to Edge.
