Hey, I was excited about the 4k Chrome feature. I am able to get the 4k quality but games are unplayable (big big lag +2 secs), tested in Destiny and Shadow of the TR.
Any idea?
Here is my setup:
+600 Mbps in the speed test
GPU Nvida 970M. Seems to be capable of hardware decoding vp9
4k screen
Forcing vp9 with Stadia+
chrome://gpu output (first part):

Hey Pompus,
try this:
Go to your nvidia control panel --> Manage 3D- Settings --> Programm Settings --> Choose Google Chrome (chrome.exe)
--> Power Managment Mode: Choose "Prefer Maximal Performance" --> Low Latency Mode: Choose "Ultra" --> safe
that worked fine for me and i can play in 4K and without lags!
Here is a screenshot of my control panel settings, unluckily in german language but i think its enough for orientation:

Hey, thank you for your answer ![]()
I have tried what solution, but still I'm having heavy lag spikes constantly and games are unplayable in 4k. I am checking the task manager which shows +90% Chrome CPU usage and around 40% GPU usage.
I would like to add a litlle bit more detail about my hardware:
This reddit thread explains that this hardware (which is not so old, I mean is an i7 and a 970M) is not able to decode vp9 and it is been done by software.
@ChrisFromGoogle could you please confirm?
Thank you for your help!
It looks like VP9 decoding is only partially supported in your generation of processors, so it would have to fall on your GPU. Unfortunately, it also looks like that model does not support VP9 decoding either. I am not an expert on those architectures so some additional research may be in order but that is what I've been able to determine.
Hi @Pompus! Can you give the above suggestion a try and let me know whether that did the trick for you? Thanks!
Thank you, @ChrisFromGoogle, hope you or any other community member can provide a solution.
I'm happy with stadia overall but I usually play on Chrome and I am getting lower specs in stadia than in my 4 year old laptop ![]()
I'm afraid that your PC can't really use vp9 hardware decoding at all, or at least not at 4k, and so forcing with Stadia+ Means you are actually using CPU decoding. and your CPU isn't powerful enough to handle It.
Go to chrome://gpu and scroll down to the header Video Acceleration Information / see if VP9 is listed there.
I'm pretty sure it isn't, because the 970 unfortunately doesn't support hardware VP9 decode.
Hello,
Did you find a solution? I ran into the same issue.
RX 5700 XT and Ryzen 3 3200G. Feels like it shouldn't be a problem.
The bandwidth test works without a hitch. When moving around or just looking around the cpu spikes up to 100% and starts lagging and stuttering. Standing absolutely still works relatively well.
