re-buy games at full price....

Jump to Best Response

I feel so stupid, I didn't realize I was going to have to re-buy all my games at full price.

So I pay full price for a game I have to pay 9.99 a month for the price to play?

This entire idea is stuoid now. Why did I ever think this was going to work differntly?

@mutant- You don't have to pay the $9.99/month Pro sub once the base version of Stadia is launched next year. You will be able to just buy games directly like Steam/Uplay/Origin, etc. The Pro sub just gives you some added extra benefit like 4k and select games (Destiny 2, Samurai Showdown for now) that you can play while you're subbed. I don't have 4k TV and depending on what games they'll be offering as part of the sub, there's a good chance I might switch to base once my included Pro sub expire.

If you added the cost of controller and Chromecast Ultra into the Founder's Edition, we're actually getting the 3 months Pro sub for free. That's not too bad I think.

Also, from what we've seen so far, games do get discounted. I personally wouldn't be re-buying games at full price on Stadia, but once they drop down in price, I'll definitely take a closer look. Right now I'm eyeing at the $10 Tomb Raider 2013 which sounds pretty reasonable.

Not really sure what you expected. You've bought into a new platform. You don't get all your PS4 games for free when switching to Xbox One do you?

yeah I mean Stadia Pro for 9,99 just gives you the option to enjoy games in best quality and some deductions as a Pro on specific games, which is nice, but even the cheaper price is still higher than on other platforms.

But the problem is still that the games have the merchant-price in general on Stadia, so they are way too overpriced I feel.

And I own already a lot of games on my PC, so why should I buy the same games for a way too high price on Stadia again? It's a bit annoying.

The re-buy problem was predictable. But the actual prices are far from competitive with the other platforms. And dont forget: With buying them on Stadia you sacrifice features from other platforms, like mod support. The prices are way to high at the moment.

For example:

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Stadia $59.99

Stxxm  $23.99

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Season Pass

Stadia  not offered

Stxxm  $19.99

Stadia is not price competive.

I think if you compare Stadia's prices to Steam then you are right, they are not competitive but are there any platforms that are??

I think it is clear that Stadia's pricing is more along the lines of the console model and if you compare the prices to PSN and Xbox Live then it is far more competitive for sure.

You have to "re-buy" anything. If you own a game on Xbox, play it on that platform. If you want the convenience of Stadia, then you must buy it for Stadia, same as any other platform. Try playing your PS4 game on your Wii or an Xbox game on your PlayStation. Do you own multiples of the same game but for different platforms? Same thing.

I agree that we have been duped.  I assumed we would get a catalogue of games in a similar way to XBox Game pass.  The cost of some fo the 'new games' is far too high.  I was excited about Stadia but now feel that it's too expensive when compared with other systems.  I might return when it becomes competitive.

How are the games on Stadia priced compared to DLC on Xbox/PS?

If Stadia set the model as 'Netflix for gsmes' where a monthly sub gets you access to a library of games, for just that monthly sub, they would of absolutely smashed it.

However, I still think stadia will be a success long term. So long as the free monthly games are good, the library grows and gets top quality games, and who knows, further down the line stadia may get its own kind of 'game pass' sub too to work alongside its main library of games.

But yeah, not sure what people were expecting, as mentioned, it's a new platform, you still have to re buy games if you move from xbox to PS etc.

Prices are not bad for some games and are competitive with the digital stores of xbox and PlayStation.

@DPE1983 from what i have seen, pretty similar.

Sure, physical copies of the same game can be had for cheaper, but that was always going to be the case.

So if Google decides Stadia was just a fun experiment and shut down the service in a few years, we still actually own the license to the game? How would that work? I can buy a game on Steam or Origin and still own it, install it where I want, etc. But with Stadia the game can't be played anywhere except Stadia, a cloud service. So I'm taking a $60 gamble every time I buy a game on Stadia and hoping that Google doesn't graveyard it?

Someone clarify this. Do we own the game and if Stadia shuts down, do we retain access to the content we've purchased?

@Mazor Well we own the license, but we own the license to play the game on Stadia. Doesn't mean we'll have right to play the games in some other forms. As of now, there's no official word what will happen if Stadia shuts down (knock on wood).

But it's the same thing with Steam or other online gaming store isn't it? Rumor says when Steam closes shop, we'll be given a chance to download the games. Is that actually true though? I did some research and I didn't find a single official statement regarding this matter.

For now I think we should just assume the worst when buying games, that there's a chance we might not be able to play the game anymore if shops close down. And this also applies to Steam, Epic Store, and other online gaming shops.

Are you serious? I think that you simply didn't pay enough attention to what was being offered. The marketing was clear. I think many people just decided what they wanted it to be in their minds and ran with it. You're not there first person who's thought this

You weren't duped. It's been clearly documented since Stadia was announced that you would have to buy games for it. It's a console in the cloud, and Google never claimed it was anything else. The Pro sub is basically the same as PSN or XBOX Live. You get some free games every month while to play while you're subscribed, and discounts on some games. If you don't want to pay for the Pro sub, you don't have to, and you can still play any games you purchase, as well as buy more (just without discounts). Looking at it that way, you're actually getting a free console. The cost of the Founders Edition was for the controller and Chromecast. By the time the free sub is GA, you should be able to use any controller on a TV with your own Chromecast, if you already had one, or any computer with Chrome. In other words, eventually you can "buy" into this platform for zero cost, except the price of the games you play, compared to having to buy a $200-300 console first. Seems like a pretty good deal to me. If you feel duped, that was your own fault for not actually paying attention to any of the news or announcements before mashing the Buy Now button.

I don't intend to buy anything I already have on Steam again. But with new games, I'll weigh the pros and cons for which platform I want to buy them on. For example, if by some miracle Cyberpunk runs better in a higher detail level on Stadia than my PC can manage I'll happily buy it for Stadia instead of PC. Unless you absolutely want the convenience factor of playing a specific game anywhere I don't see why you would feel the need to buy it again.

Do not equate Stadia to those game vendors. At least on those platforms a copy of the game is available for offline playing. Not true with Stadia.

I still guess that if Stadia would really shut down their platform they would figure out a way how to give you the licenses or games that you purchased. At the moment, everything they are saying is that you own the games you buy.

On the other hand side, Google hasn't shut down on of their premium-products that costs money yet, so I believe Stadia has still a very good chance to be stable and grow. I mean, Stadia just opened a new game studio in Montréal, where they develop Stadia-own-games, so that sounds for me like a long-term-plan and not like "oh we'll see how the platform works and then shut it down".

At the moment I - personally - see it as an additional platform to have fun with. Normally I just play PC games (MMO most of the time), but sometimes you know this feeling when you just want to sit on the sofa and play games? If I feel like that, it's a quick thing to just connect to Stadia and play. This is why I really enjoy that. Also the fact, that I could travel to my family in Germany (living in UK atm) and just play my games there, so I would not even have to carry my PC there to be able to play which is great!

Of course Stadia needs still time to grow, but I think that's worth to keep an eye on. I understand all your point of views though regarding the prices.... i feel they are way to high to be competitive. Except with the Stadia Pro deals: If you get a good deal, the game is at least kind of the same price as on another platform and then I say "yes, let's buy that". The Black Friday Deals for example were good and if you get some free games here and there as a Stadia Pro member it might be even worth to keep that subscription. Good thing though: It can be canceled at any time and we're able to play in 2020 just with Stadia base, so I guess everyone can then enjoy Stadia in the way they want to. Let's see for more deals!!

@Chufu : I don't see why Google would.  It's not like you own anything to begin with.  I certainly haven't seen anything in the terms of service or stadia content eula that says that you own the digital content, far from it.

When you "buy" from the Stadia store, you are only buying a license to access the content, nothing more or less than that. No ownership whatsoever of the content whatever that might happen to be.

License

The Content is licensed to you, not sold. Publisher grants you a limited, non-exclusive license to access
and use the Content for which you have an entitlement for your personal, non-commercial use through
Stadia. The Publisher reserves all rights in and to the Content that are not expressly granted to you under
this EULA.

So, since you don't own anything to begin with, there would be nothing for Google to give you if it all went down the drain.

On a sidenote, Google have said that they will continue to make games playable on the Stadia platform even if the publishers stop supporting Stadia as a platform, which is good if a publisher decides that for whatever reasons Stadia is no longer a necessary platform.  However, even that has caveats, as per the FAQ "Outside of unforeseen circumstances, Stadia will aim to keep any previously purchased title available for gameplay.", so I guess it depends on what those circumstances might happen to be...

But still, you don't own anything.

Kudos appreciated if deserved.

There are a couple of ways that is is intended to be different: 1) The whole idea is to be able to stream your games on different platforms, making your gaming experience freer and mobile. 2) you won't have to pay the $9.99/month and will still be able to buy games to play on this platform. The games you buy are yours to play whether you keep the pro membership or not. 3) If you DO pay the $9.99, there will be more "free" games you will be allowed to claim, the way you claimed Destiny 2. Hopefully there will be some decent titles to claim, I guess we'll see. 4) There will be pro member discounts on games. I guess we also have to wait and see how good those discounts are, but one good example right now is Mortal Combat 11 Premium. Most places have that game for $79.99 or $89.99 right now. But it's on sale here for $62.99. That's a pretty good deal it seems. So you weren't duped or made a fool of. You just misunderstood. There will be free games provided under the Pro subscription, and there will be discounts, but they're not offering you ALL the top title games you want to play for $9.99/month.

The publishers don't understand that the consumer will not own the purchased games. And without an internet connection, the consumer has zero ways of accessing their purchased content. Hopefully when games are not being purchased then they will get the hint. I will continue playing freebies for the time being.
