distorted audio from headphones

I've tried multiple headphones and they all have crackling audio when plugged into controller.  I have an "excellent connection" and audio sounds fine from tv.  has anyone else experienced this behavior?  Please advise.

Hey deathz, I've been using the headset with my controller for the past couple of days and I'm not experiencing any issues, or shall I say not yet. Try wiping the plug down with alcohol and see if that helps. What games is this happening with? I've been playing both Tomb Raider and Destiny2 and even used party chat without problem.

I've experienced the same usually in the the initialisation of a game. Destiny 2 and samurai shodown both had crackling on loading but seemed to die down later on

I've tried diferent headsets and I always get really afwul quality audio. I have an excelent connection (600MB) but the audio is terrible anyways.

I've expirienced low audio quality sometimes, through wifi connection both chromecast and controller. Maybe because the wifi signal not for the bandwidth I think. With the same controller but with cable usb-c connected everything goes fine always so It looks like the problem could be the wifi signal or something like that.

Same issue here. I have the Rig 500 and it has cracking when plugged in over WiFi. I haven't tested when connected via USB.

After troubleshooting with support, they determined my controller was defective and are sending me a replacement.

What did they do to ultimately decide to replace the controller? I'm not sure if I'm getting the runaround or not. I've tested my controller, over WiFi it's horrendous the amount of crackling and popping. When I use it on my computer over USB with a headset, it's mostly fine, but occasionally pops and crackles.

Hi @deathz, did the new controller remedy your issue, as I have exactly the same thing.

yes, the replacement works fine.  It was definitely faulty hardware

Sorry, it turns out the replacement had the same issue.  However, I am convinced that the replacement was a used controller, possibly one returned for this same issue

Same here. Audio works for a brief moment after which it starts fading, crackling. The controller inputs start lagging and the controller gets disconnected. I’ve had it working for about 5 to 10 mins tops once and it was awesome though. CC connection is excellent and the controller works like a charm until i decide to try the headphone jack again. How did you guys reach out to support?

I have the same problem. With tomb raider. After a long period of gaming section, the headphone starts to have cracking noise. Either their controller is busted or their software problem. Hopefully, software so they can patch it

Same problem, have tried two different wired headsets. Only “fix” So far for me is to lower overall stadia volume so that the crackles dont bother me as much

Having the same issue on a Mac. Funny enough I don't use headphones but the moment I open Stadia in the Chrome Browser it says headphones are connected. I pinned the problem down to being purely a problem in the Stadia app/website. When I open a browser window and play a youtube video I get a clean sound. The moment I open a new browser window and load Stadia I get the cracking / static sound from the youtube video playing. Closing the browser window with the Stadia webpage turns the sound back to normal and clean again.

Same problem here, Mac running MacOS Catalina v 10.15.5 Chrome version Version 83.0.4103.61 (Official Build) (64-bit).

Workarounds:

Option 1. Using headphones over bluetooth gives distorted and thin sound, all other sources playing at the same time is perfectly fine. Plugging in and using 3.5mm is a solid workaround for now for also using the Microphone.

Option 2. Leaving the game chat works if you are not in a game where you want to be able to talk with your squad.
