Will Stadia go the way of Daydream?

My father invested heavily in Google Daydream, in that he purchased many titles. Google then discontinued Daydream and my father found he was no longer able to redownload and use his purchased titles.

My concern is that Stadia may go the same route. If it fails as a platform and Google pulls the plug as they have with Daydream, then users will potentially lose access to hundreds £/€/$ worth of games they have purchased.

What, if any measures are Google taking for the future should the worst happen? Will they credit users or allow them to transfer ownership of the games to another platform like Steam?

Or, will users instantly lose hundreds £/€/$ of purchases.

This question alone is making me very hesitent to invest in stadia, as I am sure it is for countless other potential users.

Hi @Pelzon

to be honest, I do not know it. But it's always the case. If Steam goes down, you cannot play any longer your Steam bought tiles, the same with Apple App Store or any other digital goods maker.

I can really feel with you. To invest a lot of money (aka full price AAA games) in a relatively new platform is a risk that may work awesome but it will fail. The time will tell us :slightly_smiling_face:

Good question, and something that Google should address. I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's Daydream purchases, that is poor form.

I can imagine that many of us are thinking this. One reason I am is the amount of promos Stadia has been doing (free for YouTube premium, free with pre-orders, etc.). This makes me think that either they are desperately trying to gain users, or they are prepping Chromecast with Google TV as the primary Stadia device and are clearing stock. However, I tend to lean on the former given Google's track record, as you have shown. Not to mention, with next-gen having very similar capabilities now (i.e. remote play/play anywhere, SSD, SURROUND SOUND [:rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:] etc.) what is really the advantage of Stadia? I still have Stadia for now, but depending on what Cyberpunk is like graphically I can be easily be swayed to Team Green or Blue.

Well, to me it's the easiness of the system. I can play anywhere without the need of a console. I have always had Playstation and I understand PS Now is not that good. Besides that, if I want to play on my tv I will still need a console I think? I just don't feel it. I don't have that much time to play anymore nowadays, so buying a console is too expensive.

Xbox with xCloud might be better, but for now you still need a console to play on tv. (I heard some kind of dongle is in the making like a chromecast, but just rumours).

So to me it's still the simplicity. I don't think the giveaways are a "last resort" but just a way to get more attention for the platform. To grow the user base.
From a marketing perspective this is a good idea. Normally the device is like €100 right? But after that people might be hooked and pay for Pro for years and buy on the platform. Without the giveaways there are just too many people thinking "but will it even work". And now you can see on Reddit etc people are giving it a try and they are blown away. I think Google did it mainly to dare people out and try it.

To give my opinion about the Daydream question. I don't think it's comparable. Yes, Stadia and Daydream are/were both new tech, but Daydream is even more niche then Stadia (I think). Looking at myself: I love to play games and Stadia is perfect, but VR... I dunno, I don't like it and it really feels like "the extra I don't need" (like 3D-TV's lol).

Yes, gaming is also not needed, because it's a hobby, but you get my point. I need a platform, whether it's xbox, ps or Stadia, to play games. VR is just extra and only for those gamers/etch-enthousiasts interested in it.
I'd say VR audience is like a smaller sub-group of gamers.

Roses are red, Gaming is fun. You are carrying too much, to be able to run!

They can't address it, because addressing it will simply be taken as either "they would say that, wouldn't they?" or "yup, it's in trouble". No company ever explains their exit strategy because an exit strategy is tacitly acknowledging that the product could fail.

All we know is that Stadia is currently planning for 2023 and beyond, and aren't interested in judging performance short term.

I agree but I think stadia is already more popular than daydream ever was and a much better product overall value wise

The people behind Stadia have repeatedly said that this is not a short term project. Also while they were not specific, they did state EARLY ON before Stadia was even released, that if in some crazy way, the platform failed and they had to shut it down, that they would "make the customers whole". Most likely that means they will probably provide redemption codes for any games that users BOUGHT and owned on Stadia.

Personally, I'm not worried. Stadia is in a much better place than it was a year ago. They have support and partnerships with major developers and indie developers and I think as we see many of the promised features starting to happen, the platform is only going to get better. There's still some competition, and there's going to be more competition coming I think. But it feels like Google really believes in Stadia and has a long term plan for it.
