Why are Stadia game prices so high?

For example Rage 2 is on sale at Steam for $19.79 and $26.39 for the regular and deluxe editions respectively. Interestingly enough ending the same day that Stadia’s “black Friday” sale ends as well, December 3rd. https://store.steampowered.com/app/548570/RAGE_2/?snr=1_4_autumnsale__617 Yes, I’d rather purchase on Stadia for the flexibility of being able to play on any device. But not gonna pay that high a premium for that. Not sure if it’s just me but I’m not very likely to pay full retail on older titles, especially when Google has a track record of killing off projects that I love. Anyone else feel the same?

@limitlis Publishers set the price on the Stadia store, not Google. If they decided to set it full price on Stadia, but discounted rate on Steam, they probably have their own reason.

Personally for me I'm not going to purchase a game if I don't agree with the price. I'll consider it if the price drops down in the future. As for now, I'm voting with my wallet.

Stadia Guides are not employed by Google. Opinions are my own.

yeah steam sales are bonkers during black friday/summer/winter they have some of the most mind blowing deals, you know who else is becoming really good at that? Xbox I swear I've paid 2 dollars and got a few games that would of cost me almost 100 dollars each canadian lol

I think bonkers sales is what Stadia needs right now. Since they don't _really_ have exclusives. Otherwise it will be hard to convince/convert people. Its all about that vendor lock-in these days isn't it?

Same for me, unless the prices are dropping as a sale on Stadia to an acceptable amount that is at least the same as on Amazon, it doesn't make sense for me to buy a game on Stadia, because it's otherwise a huge amount of money. And I am not rich, so yeah, I'll probably stick at the moment with my Mortal Kombat 11 and Destiny 2. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Couldn't agree more. They need low low prices as early adopter incentives. Rage 2 is free with gamepass right now. It's over a year old. No way it should be full price, especially since it's not a big hit (although if you haven't played it, you should. The combat is insane - makes you feel like a god by endgame. Get it on steam at a discount).

Google should be subsidising publishers if it's really the publishers demanding high prices - they need adoption, right now, not a bunch of overpriced games that are causing people to WTF.

I feel TEAM XBOX is strategizing perfectly regarding pricing especially with Rage 2 being free,  they have wiggle room to make moves since their library is bigger right now.

All these sales that are coming up from black friday (steam is already on point with this I want STADIA to follow the steam model for discounts or Xbox)

Honestly Xbox/steam have been fantastic i think PSN has also been solid but these three have such an enormous library of games it's easy for them to do.

@limitlis : Outside of the Steam Black Friday discounts I didn't see that the prices were that much different at all.... did I not look properly?

Kudos appreciated if deserved.

@Mad_Dog_BravoI can't attach images here but a quick search shows that on steam or xbox for example:

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition: $5.99 (xbox)

• Rise of the Tomb Raider 20 Year: $8.99 (xbox) | $11.99 (Humble Bundle)

Rise of the Tomb Raider : $8.99 (Steam, non 20 yr? idk what the diff is)

Rage 2: $19.79 – Deluxe: $26.39 (xbox &  steam)

Red Dead Redemption 2: $29.99 xbox w/gold $35.99 xbox without gold. | $47.99 (Humble Bundle)

Shadow of Tomb Raider: $23.68 (steam) | $23.99 (Humble Bundle)

I could probably keep going but that should paint the picture...

@limitlis at first I thought the prices were decent. At least some of the pro prices compared to REGULAR priced games. But you're right. For example mortal combat 11 premium is normally a good buy at $62.99 which is what Stadia is asking it for. But a lot of the Black Friday sales have it now for $49.99. I thought Stadia was going to have a real black Friday sale too, but so far it doesn't look that way. It's disappointing.

@Xevioso -- Same. I was looking forward to a real Black Friday Sale, which, IMO, is not what they have now. Even as a new product offering, why launch before Black Friday, if you have nothing to offer. When comparing prices in general against Stadia, is a fair comparison, just to compare against it's digital counterparts only? Thoughts?

@Stoked4Good personally I thought that comparing only with digital was fair, since with physical you also have the used market, or even rentals. Guess there is still one more day to see if there is any changes to Black Friday prices, or if it will stay the same.

@Stoked4Good  yeah i was equally disappointed.

Discounts on games was supposed to be part of Pro membership anyways. So how is this even a "sale"?

Yeah I get the publisher/developer set prices argument, but that's just speculation at this point. Even if that is the case, then I think its pretty obvious that neither are really giving 2 :pile_of_poo: about it. From what i've read even Steam has rules about how/when games can be put on sale.

IDK maybe i'm just salty that I pretty much have spent $160 on what is essentially an Assassins Creed Odyssey streaming box :expressionless_face:.

@limitlis - The unfortunate part of it all as I see it, is they need to recover the bad press, and do so quickly. I had a feeling they'd have some good news within the first week, and they did, like the Buddy Pass, and overall better communication with the Premier rollout, but that's not enough, IMO. A true Black Friday Sale would have done it for me, a testament of Google doing right by Founders. Labeling Pro Discounts as Black Friday is the worst marketing I've seen around. Should Google rename Pro to Black Friday!? It's going to be Black Friday all year long!!! Based on Google's definition of Black Friday. Terrible. I'm content with purchase, but I'm also dissapointed. Do better, Google, do better.

@Stoked4Good I don't wonder regarding that, because ChrisfromGoogle already mentioned:

"Happy Wednesday! We're back with our final Community Update thread for this week, and given that it's the day before Thanksgiving here in the USA, today's thread may be short. We likely won’t be doing any new threads on Thursday or Friday of this week as the team is out of office." (see here)

Therefore I guess you'll not hear anything from the team today. This is probably as well one of the reasons, why they did a Black Friday week on Stadia and not only a "Black Friday".

@Chufu - Grace just posted today on Discord. As a result of crap marketing and lack of proper communication. : )

Here's something simple that would have helped.  Create a category in the app where it lists the sale games, and title it Black Friday Sale.  Do not list Pro anything in there, unless you plan on listing and displaying how both discounts apply.  e.g  Reg 59.99, Pro Discount 49.99, Black Friday 29.99

Agreed with the pricing high in comparison but like it was said before publishers set the price, ask them.
