Why I Left Stadia

I just wanted to write this for the community to let my fellow players know why I am leaving Stadia. I know I am inconsequential to the player base, and that my cancelling Stadia and moving on from it means nothing to Google, but I thought that, given I was with Stadia from the beginning, I would explain why I left. It will take very few words (one even) if I reduce it to its fundamental point and that is mismanagement. I am dumbfounded by Google’s approach to Stadia, its marketing, its rollout, and the claims made about its abilities. 4K gaming on a “true” next-gen platform? Nope, sorry; Red Dead Redemption runs closer to PS4 Pro than it does Xbox One X (https://youtu.be/x6y4MnlFLNE)! Even Doom Eternal, which was THE game to promote the quality Stadia was capable of runs at 1800p… Unacceptable. Why flaunt your 10+ TFLOPS if you aren’t pushing studios to use it? Why even have that much power!? I am glad there is a class-action lawsuit on this point (https://www.classaction.org/blog/basically-beta-testers-class-action-alleges-google-lied-about-stadi...). I will be watching this closely. (Yes, Cyberpunk 2077 was a small victory, but when the "next-gen" patch is released it will be a short-lived victory.)

Another point is simply the horrible communication from the Stadia team and its management (especially towards its employees). Grace and Chris, I am not sure what your job descriptions are or what you were instructed to do when you got your positions, but the lack of participation in the community is unacceptable. I do not want to give my money to a company that cannot communicate clearly, especially to its own employees! The revelation of Phil Harrisons' email to Stadia Games and Entertainment employees a week before they closed both studios is appalling. Shame on you, Google and Harrison. Shame on you…

What is the point of Stadia now? Play anywhere? Well, you can play Xbox Game Pass on an Android phone or tablet, and a PC browser version is coming soon, or the Switch! Next-gen graphics? No… What about amazing exclusive experiences only possible on the cloud? Oh, wait… It is simply a place to play fewer games and in poorer quality. No thank you, please.

I purchased Stadia on day one because I thought that this could have been great. A true “game” changer, but it looks like Microsoft is actually leading the charge on streamed gaming (not to mention Amazon Luna!). Overselling, overpromising, overhyping, overego'd? Whatever it was/is, I am done.

I know there are many(?) of you who still support Stadia, and you may reply that if I did support it, I would stay, etc. You may write rebuttals to my quick points about why I am leaving, but they will not do anything. I just want to write down why, after over a year of continually stressed patience, I am finally leaving. I have the controller and my account, so I will keep watching and hoping to see the changes that will make Stadia a true competitor for my gaming time. But, until then---farewell.

Sad to see you go.

But we are all gamers no need to be dedicated to one platform (pc included). Play where you feel comfortable. Stadia will welcome you back with open arms if and when you decide to return to using stadia

Well I saw a launch trailer where they hit the console and offered you a Stadia controller.

I think they weren't very friendly with other platforms.

We can always play with our 2077 PCs.

Perfect example of how a member of the community supported the service for a year. He considers leaving and makes a letter to GOOGLE.

And community members attack him and treat him like garbage.

I think you guys should rethink who is the toxic and the hater in the community.

The one who talks to Google or the one who attacks members of the community.

I don't see anyone attacking anyone in these comments. I was going to leave it at my meme post that was a little tongue in cheek, but I'll explain my reasoning as it seems that it might have upset you (unintentionally).

It's understandable that people might be upset with the service and don't want to continue using it. No one would complain with that decision as everyone needs to decide what's right for them. Similarly, people who want to give constructive feedback on the platform too, that's something I usually see being supported within the community and again, no one would say anything.

The many posts I've seen across various sites with people writing up that they're leaving the service just seems excessive and generally not constructive. You don't see anyone on any other playform (like Xbox) or anything writing that they're leaving and why on the same level as we've seen with Stadia and it gets repetitive. If you're posting to your friendship group why they won't see you on Stadia anymore, again, I understand that, but for something like this it's just as easy to leave this message as a comment on any of the many other I'm leaving Stadia threads as having its own thread doesn't add anything except inundate everyone's feed with it.

Also, if this were a high profile user who people know and would miss, again, this kind of post is understandable.

I mean no disrespect to any individual and these are just my opinions, but I'm sure I'm not the only one getting slightly frustrated seeing the many separate posts on this topic that won't lead to any constructive conversations.

Few games have you played and few platforms have you used.

There are always threads of I'm leaving, it is a way of telling the platform / editor / developer, hey here you are losing a client and these are the reasons, you can save the survey or investigate my clicks.

What is that well-known community member that everyone would miss (high profile wtf) hilarious.

That no longer exists, legendary players no longer exist, the stream killed the magic or achievements of any game.

For me one less user is one less user who will be in my strike or in my crucible and it is harmful for me.

I am also no longer a pro subscriber; I also haven’t left but I think the games that were available for free as a pro member were generally aimed at a younger audience and with the exception of Sniper Elite which I really enjoyed there wasn’t much that enticed me.

I do hope that Stadia survives though because as a very casual and older gamer it seems to suit me well.

Hello friends. Just my two cents here. I subscribed to stadia pro with the founders edition with the hope to find an alternatvie to my ps4pro and it's noisy fans. With Cyberpunk 2077 I am very exited about Stadia, bought Phoenix Point two weeks ago and waiting for Outriders. In total I am satisfied with Stadia and I hope Google will continue with Stadia and not suspend the service.

But I totally agree with the really bad service and promises that they don't keep.

For example the Cyberpunk 2077 deal: buy now and get a Chromecast and Controller for free. I did it. But I didn't get the hardware. I askes the service and they told me "sorry, sold out." - thats all. As I complainded my issue, they still had the promotions running that you will get the hardware if you buy until December, 17th and today they still write it on their pages. I've bought 2077 on December 14th and get NOTHING.

I mean, it's not about the Chromecast or the controller. It's about that we talk about Google an not a vendor on the street.

Their final answer was: " I'm so sorry, I have double checked everything in my end and I really can't do anything".

Google should check Amazon to learn how real customer service works.

They closed the offer early due to high demand,  which was in their exclusions *while supplies last*.  I received my Stadia controller and Chromecast Ultra through the Cyberpunk promotion.  I made the suggestion to others at the time but they had similarly waited too long and the offer closed out.

Ultimately Stadia missed out on some more subscribers, overlooking the long-term opportunity to capture recurring content purchases in lieu of short-term loss on their controller and Chromecast sales.

I'm hopeful they will partner with an upcoming release and do a similar drop.  There has been at least one discounted promotion since then.
