What today’s message about Stadia means for players

Stadia players, you may already have seen the message shared on Google’s main blog. This is a short recap of the most important information for players from the main post:

  • You will continue to have access to your games library through January 18, 2023 so you can complete final play sessions and move your progress to alternate platforms where possible.

  • Commerce functionality (the ability to buy games, new subscriptions, add-ons or in-game purchases) on Stadia has now been disabled.

  • Google will offer a full refund of all Stadia hardware purchases (Stadia Controller, Stadia Founder’s Edition, Stadia Premiere Edition, or Play and Watch with Google TV Package) made in the Google Store and all purchases of games and in-game transactions made in the Stadia Store.

  • The refund process will take us some time to complete, and we expect to have the majority of refunds completed by the middle of January 2023. Please allow us until this time before contacting our support team regarding the status of your refund(s).

  • Stadia Pro subscription payments will not be eligible for refund, but if you are an active subscriber, you will continue to have access to your library without charge during the shut-down period.

As we begin the work of processing refunds to customers, Stadia customer service agents will not be able to provide more information to you at this time. For information and updates, please review the information on our Help Center, which will include new information as it becomes available. We’ll also contact players directly via email shortly with more information.

We want to thank you for taking this journey with us: in particular, the Founders and fans who have been with us from the beginning. The Stadia team poured the same passion for games into our work building and supporting Stadia as you have shown us each day in your play.

Absolutely not the same thing or even close to good enough. Bluetooth functionality is a must, wired doesn't work well for dozens of platforms, tvs, streaming services. It has to be Bluetooth so you can actually play from the couch, wired is a significantly worse play experience.

Good afternoon,

Please unlock the Bluetooth. I love the controller, but it will be useless after the service shuts down since I can not use it as a normal Bluetooth controller on my other devices.

Thank you,

HB

Hello @Lele

It is a fantastic controller, and I would love to see them do this. However, that would require an investment in software engineering with open questions about long term support. Instead, they are refunding the cost of any purchased software and hardware, including controllers. That seems fair under the circumstances.

Why not Zoidberg?

i really dont feel that to be the case- the steam controller got a similar update near the end of its life when valve pulled the plug on it. the software engineering investment required should be minimal, as the xinput standard is well documented in use with the wireless chip already in the gamepad.

Did Valve refund everyone's controller purchases?

Even if the engineering effort were relatively low, you still have a long term support issue to deal with (e.g., technical support staffing/training, firmware updates, deciding whether to keep the app around for initial setup, etc.). Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I don't see this happening.

Why not Zoidberg?

Valve don't need to refund everyone, they still support the steam controller with 'Steam Input'.

While I agree with you, I think Google would benefit highly from unlocking the firmware and maintaining support for some time. Google built millions of these controllers and is now shutting down the service, and for many people, these controllers will become obsolete if they can't be used wirelessly. They're basically creating a ton of electronic waste, which is not the most environmentally friendly move.

I'dd rather have my stadia controller's bluetooth unlocked than a refund.
Also unlocking bluetooth on the stadia controller will prevent a huge pile of e-waste.

It is very unfortunate to hear that Stadia is shutting down in January 2023.  What will happen to my Ubisoft plus subscription that I currently pay through stadia?

Good question, I'm not sure what happens to it, but I'd recommend you to get in touch with Ubisoft support and double check with them, maybe they have some tool or something and can transfer it somehow to another platform for you. At least worth a try checking with them, I'd say.

Yeah sad to see as well that it eventually R.I.P.'ed. I was hoping this product will be different and will be a success, but maybe I was too optimistic.

I see the post about refunding hardware, but I don't see ANYTHING about being refunded or "made whole" for games that we PURCHASED and will lose access to. When we we find out about that?!?!

Ahh, OK, I see it now... I think I was seeing red when I read it the first time!!! Man this stinks. Google never really gave the platform the support it needed. It's a way better service than most people realize.

All free apps & services they either axed or rolled into other apps/services. This is the first Google product/service people actually spent money on so getting refunded is straight. Google's original "Asus/Nexus Player" gaming system was the other but they refunded alotta pre orders for that too. Oh well, free online gaming on all my devices for a while, I guess.

Can Google make the refund process EASIER? I have a lot of purchases on Stadia and i don't want to stay with customer support to get my refunds. Just introduce some commands in stadia ui so we can make the refund requests EASIER.

@NooBiSi Most likely you'll get an email detailing the process, and it will be automatic. I don't expect anyone that needs refund will need to go through support. Here's what we know so far.

https://support.google.com/stadia/answer/12790109

Q: Will I get a refund?  What is available for a refund?

A:  We will be offering refunds for all Stadia hardware purchases (Stadia Controller, Founders Edition, Premiere Edition, and Play and Watch with Google TV packages) made through the Google Store and software transactions (games and add-on purchases) through the Stadia store. Stadia Pro subscriptions are not eligible for refund, however you will be able to continue playing your games in Pro without further charges until the final wind down date.

Q: Do I have to return my hardware to get a refund?

A:  Most hardware purchases (Stadia Controller, Founders Edition, Premiere Edition, and Play and Watch with Google TV packages) made directly from Google will not need to be returned. More details on how to obtain a refund for your Stadia hardware purchases will be posted here in the coming weeks.

Q:  How/When will I get my refund?

A: We are working through this process now and will keep this article updated as we define the process for each of the countries and different situations. Our intent is to have the majority of refunds processed back to the original payment by January 18, 2023.

Q: Are you refunding my Stadia Pro subscription?

A: We will not be refunding Stadia Pro subscriptions. Players who held an active Stadia Pro subscription as of September 29, 2022 will not be charged for access to their Pro library or other subscription entitlements during the shut-down period.

Hello,

I know the question about refund has been asked by a lot of people but no one asked about the eso+ and ubi+ subscription. I know that ubi+ is payed to Ubisoft, I think so, but eso+ depend on my eso account, which means that I'm losing everything I paid for as there is no cross-account for eso.

I really hope that I'm gonna get a refund at least for my eso+ subscription.

Thank you.

(Sorry for any mistake, English isn't my first language)

@Noxyrion For ESO+ subscription you will need to go through Zenimax https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/48054/~/whom-should-i-contact-about-bill...

But, the account is related to stadia, how i will explain the reason for my refund request. Knowing that it's not Bethesda's fault but Google's that I'm going to lose my account and its contents. I understand for ubi+ but eso should be refunded as a dlc.

no, your account is not related to stadia you just need to buuy the game again, you can always login on it with other platforms, i still play eso on steam and stadia and im using the same account.

I highly doubt it, since I have a PC version, and when I log in with my stadia logins it doesn't work and vice versa. I had a PS4 account, pc and now stadia, and being on pc, my PS4 and stadia logins are not working. Another point, if multi-accounting was possible, I could have logged in with my pc account on stadia... Anyway, I'll wait to see how things go but I'm sure my eso account is lost because otherwise they wouldn't have refunded the game.

Ps: I just checked on their site, each account is independent. You can't use a stadia account on a PC version... so I don't know how you did it. Unless you consider playing stadia on browser as a PC version and in this case you are wrong.

with this announcement of Stadia ending, the least you could do to prevent thousands of tons of waste, is to unlock the Bluetooth capability and allow the Stadia gamepad to be used with other devices like PC's, phones, and Chromebooks. Based on hardware data, the internal wireless chip is fully capable of acting as a bluetooth gamepad. The gamepad itself is fairly robust and well built, and giving the hardware new life would do a lot of good. - not to mention good PR. For a comparable situation, Valve's Steam Controller eventually saw a firmware update to allow standard bluetooth gamepad functionality. current gen microsoft, nintendo, and sony hardware has been largely bluetooth universal as well.
