What is the VPN trick to make 4k work on Cyberpunk

Jump to Best Response

Update: I found the workaround that makes 4K work, but it cost me purchasing a different VPN and a night of troubleshooting. This is the workaround that I got to work: https://www.reddit.com/r/Stadia/comments/l5lcxq/solution_for_unable_to_play_cyberpunk_in_4k_vpn/

Cyberpunk is still not running 4K even though people say it's fixed. Can someone please point me to the information where I have to use a VPN to get this to work? That seems to be the only thing that has helped anyone, Stadia support and CD projekt red are not.

The fix for this issue is:

1. connect a VPN on a PC/phone to other servers (i.e. Dallas or SF)

2. start Cyberpunk on that device. Once its started, close the window/app to abruptly stop Stadia

3. start Stadia on the CCU, start Cyberpunk. If it resumes your previous session, you'll be able to get 4K from those other servers

The downside of this workaround is that you are on further servers, and the latency might cause it to be not worth it.

Hello @dood using a VPN while using stadia could only lead to adding lag and so the quality will degrade, before trying to find a solution let's have some info! where are you playing? on a TV using the chromecast? on a laptop or on a smartphone?

One thing that you can do is to check the menu while playing, (stadia button on controller or MAIUSC - TAB on your keyboard and check the connection tab (The green one with "connessione" written on it here on the screenshot

And check once inside the 4k resolution

It will give you insight on why the quality is not 4k, in my case for example is simply because my device doesn't support 4k

Thank you for the reply! And believe me - I really wish I didn't have to experiment with VPNs to do this.

I have to try this with a VPN because there is a known issue where Stadia servers aren't supporting Cyberpunk 2077 properly. I contacted Stadia support and they said its a known issue, and they told me to ask the publisher for a workaround. The publisher told me the problem is Stadia's servers, and linked me to this thread: https://community.stadia.com/t5/Stadia-General/Close-and-reopen-your-game-for-4K-resolution-support-...

Stadia keeps telling me to "reopen" my Cyberpunk game in order to get 4K, but it doesn't work. My other games stream 4K. According to the people who have gotten past this, I need to trick Stadia into putting me onto a working server, and then when I disconnect the VPN it may work

Hey @dood

With tools like Stadia + for the Chromebrowser you can force 4k as resolution

but like @HatDroid  said that your device should also support it

As already mentioned, VPN is not a solution here, so you tend to create even more problems

So are you recommending that I try to place Stadia within a browser on my TV? its not an Android TV

You can play Stadia on your TV by using a supported Chromecast Ultra, from where you play? a laptop? which OS?

Connect to VPN then launch game, when at main menu tab out of game and disconnect VPN. Game will closet itself, open same game again and all should be good

Thanks for adding this! That is the process for if you are trying on PC.

The process if you are trying with a CCU appears to be:

1. Turn on VPN, start the game on a different device

2. Close the game while in progress on the other device, then turn off the VPN

3. Restart the game session on the CCU before time runs out, it should stay connected to the better servers until you close the game

Can't believe this is still an issue. I stopped paying for Pro because of this issue. So i haven't been able to check for myself it it's been fixed or not.

I submitted my case to Stadia support on this on December 12, 2020. Was told they'd update me when the issue is resolved. They haven't updated me about a resolution to this day.

It's funny because I was so excited about getting into Stadia at the beginning. But after experiencing this issue, and seeing Stadia's lack of care for people experiencing this issue like me, they have officially lost me.

It really doesn't matter how good Stadia's tech is. If they treat their users like this, then I don't want anything to do with the platform.

Hey @chu the issue were reported as fixed some time ago, what happen's on your end? still not able to play on 4k despite having the connection and the device able to?

Have you checked your connection tab to see if there is another issue?

My issue began occurring and a day after Cyberpunk 2077 was released, so on December 11, 2020. It wasn't affecting most people, and the people that were experiencing it seemed to be in specific regions. Like Southern Ontario, Canada (where I live) and I believe people in Utah were also posting about this issue.

The issue that I think you're referring happened around early February. It was the same issue but I assume it had started affecting more people and was resolved soon after. I still had Stadia Pro, so I tested to see if the issue was resolved for me too. It was not. It seems like Stadia fixed only fixed the issue people who started experiencing this problem in early February, but not for the people who have been experiencing this issue since December 2020!

So I officially gave up. My Pro Subscription expired February 16th, and I decided not to renew it anymore.
