What if Google decides to shutdown Stadia project?

Jump to Best Response

Hi,

I'm just wondering...what will happen with all the games that I've bought on the Stadia if Google one day decides to shutdown this platform (well, this wouldn't be the first time Google kills some project...).

Will Google refund all the costs?

I know that many people have silmilar concerns and it stops them from moving to Stadia platform...This is where Geforce Now seems to be a bit more safe solution - even if nvidia kills it, all the games are still available on Steam/GOG/Epic platforms.

Also - it would be great if Stadia team would inform about plans (some kind of roadmap?) regarding increasing GPU/CPU power...
Games like Cyberpunk or latest Star Wars look rather similar to last-gen consoles (PS4, XONE) - in terms of resolution (image is really blurry in Cyberpunk in Framerate mode - looks like 720p, blurry textures, low anistropic filtering...) and visual settings (usually something closer to PC "medium"). Also, there is no support for Ray Tracing...

If I want to say that the digital content is supported, the old hardware stopped being produced so if you want to reproduce it and your hardware breaks, they will not give you support in the repair and they are dead systems, obviously everything is online and you can get a .ROM anywhere.

Same as vinyl, cassette, Beta vhs, cd, dvd, radio, blue ray ... etc ...

Technology advances and the format advances ... we don't know if in 10 years we will all be connected to neuralink and starlink and we will be batteries for Elon Musk.

I wouldn't worry. Regarding quality, an nvidia GTX 1080 is more powerful than a PS5 and an Xbsx and it is hardware from 4 years ago.

The battle is now high-end PC vs. cloud servers

That's like asking what happens if Xbox or steam or PlayStation shuts down you will lose all digital purchases, google has said stadia is here for the long run, the head of stadia said in an interview that they are upgrading stadia they just don't wanna post it and start a hype train.

The same as Amstrad CPC, Atari, SEGA Master System, Game Boy, Super Nintendo, Neo Geo, PSX, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, PSP,  XBOX, Wii, PS3, PSVita ... although some PS3 games you can on PSNow and Xbox 360 and One you can on Gamepass Gold and PS4 is backward compatible with PS5 and well...PC you have STEAM but Online games are always closing servers or changing publishers and migrating accounts and if you no longer play you lose your thousands of $$$$ :grinning_face_with_sweat: in cosmetics.

I don't care, I live in the moment.

And the moment for me is Cyberpunk, I don't care about the rest. I want Cyberpunk and Stadia gives it to me right now.

In the future if I want Star Citizen and Stadia won't give it to me, I'll go where Star Citizen I can play it.

Stadia may not close, but I'm not interested.

So the platform is the least important to me.

Ok, I can see your point, though your comparison to psx, snes, dreamcast, etc. is a bit wrong (I still own all these consoles and I can play my games on them ;-))

Btw., why did you decided to choose Stadia over GeForce Now (Cyberpunk looks much better on GFNow)?

I'm also a bit worried about patches, upgrades. add-ons...patch 1.04 for Cyberpunk for Stadia was available after about a week after it was released for other platforms. Patch 1.05 is still not available...well, since Stadia is a completely separate gaming platform it all depends on how popular it will become and whether developers will have interest in investing time into porting games for Stadia...

Yeah, but platforms like Steam, Playstation or Xbox are running for years now..Stadia on the other hand lives for about 2 years now..? And - in my opinion - it's a quite risky project...well, just wondering...couldn't find any official information.

Re. tech upgrade - not informing about plans is a bit unfortunate. Stadia's visuals should be at least comparable to PS5/XSX - if I'm going to invest money into games on this platform, I would like to know when they will look similar to next-gen consoles.

Just last word - I'm really impressed how good Stadia works (at least in my case) - in terms of latency, input lag, game loading speed - just the visuals are currently a bit lacking. Also games library is a bit poor, but I believe it's just a matter of time...on the other hand - MS is launching their cloud gaming for PC (Spring 2021 AFAIR), so I'm a bit worried about Stadia's future...

If you worry the platform isnt for you, imagine it would not be fun regretting every purchase incase it closes down like everything evsntually does.

The PS5 GPU is the RDNA 2.0 equivalent of an RTX 2070 or RTX 2070 Super, which is slightly better than a 1080. So no, a 1080 is not more powerful than a PS5.

The thing I like about cloud gaming and stadia is how adaptable it is to new trends going forward. So if there is a need to support some new technology to make the most of the latest games then Google can upgrade the hardware their end and we all get the benefit without having to scrap an old console and lay out £500 for a new one!

Yup, I like this idea too (even though I have a collection of some old-school consoles ;-))...next months will show how it works in practice and if Google will upgrade tech spec. of Stadia platform.

I finally sold my N64 earlier this year and got £150! Nice additional funds for Stadia games... sounds like you could be sitting on a small gold mine!

It's exactly like Matt says, it's like upgrading your PC, swapping an old part for a superior one.

The case of consoles is not just discarding an old console for a new one, it is that you have to wait 8 years for the next generation.

These consoles are already obsolete and have just been released... so it's probably the last hardware gen.

Also consoles are holding back game development with their limited storage, even the PC.

I hope Stadia takes advantage of this and creates a game where developers can fly without limits.

Well, at the end of a day it all comes to what games will be available on the platform..

I don't care that much about tech spec if the games are looking great and are running smooth (and games from studios like Insomniac Games (on Playstation) and Turn 10 Studios (Forza series) are a proof that you don't really need a 1000$ GPU to get a good visual quality - games like Uncharted 4 or Ratchet&Clank are really looking great even on old PS4. Miles Morales looks great IMO on a new PS5 - and it's a first Insomniac game for this console..).

MS will soon strike PC market with its cloud gaming and a set of a really good AAA games on their Xbox Game Pass subscription..time will tell who's gonna win :slightly_smiling_face:

Great news is that cloud gaming (no matter on what platform) is finally a real alternative for 'traditional' gaming - in terms of latency, input lag and general user experience.

OP question has nothing to do with hardware or technology... That is off topic

What happens when EA, Securom, Denuvo, Steam''' stop doing auth or revoke which both require their servers?

GTA IV physical copy, for example, will become a paper weight the second SecuRom shuts their revoke and auth servers down...

Xbox One won't even play games without constant connection to MS servers..

You pay $59.99 for access not ownership... You say that is okay by participating...

It all has to do with technology and hardware.

You can play GTA IV version Skidrow or CODEX or 3DM or emulate on different systems.

And... yes, you can play copy games on ps4 xbox and switch, and probably in ps5 xbsx...phones... etc...

Licensing is the least important as Google can even create its own IP.

I think the concern is not the license that you obtain as property, but if Stadia stops providing service, so it does not access to Google hardware.

"Skidrow" + "CODEX" = Illegal in every nation on Earth

"And... yes, you can play copy games on ps4 xbox and switch, and probably in ps5 xbsx...phones... etc..."

Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X have piracy? Nope.. Not even last board revision of 360 does... Also: still illegal in every nation on Earth

If SecuRom takes revoke and auth servers offline you can never play without breaking the law... You're welcome to prove otherwise on anything I say in this post....

P.S. your post is telling the public to commit crimes, and some won't know better... Actually: I don't think you even know laws around reverse engineering and distribution... You have a sheltered kid view of law and property and economics that you haven't seen fair consequences of yet..

Ok ok you win... put me in jail.

You don't really know but I'm a terrible hacker who will bring chaos to the world.

While I am here, I am stealing Google's data and creating a terrible AI in my secret base on the moon that will destroy the corporations that maintain the progress of humanity, my goal is to dominate the world under my own laws.

Well you definitely had the right question and your concern was proven to be validated as Stadia just shut down it's development team. I'm gonna make a guess that the service is not going to be here much longer than the team lasted. I say this because I bought Cyberpunk on Stadia just for the ability to play it, assuming it would always be there, but how is anyone going to feel comfortable buying a game that they might not be able to keep if the company that they bought it through just shut down it's development team, only a week earlier was stating that the teams future was solid.
