Ubisoft is Awesome - Watch Dogs: Legion 4.0 Patch Feedback

Jump to Best Response

Hi There

I haven't been active on the Stadia Community Forums much but I am hoping to change that with every bit of positivity I can give back to the community.

I'd like to start of by saying how much I commend Ubisoft for their continued support of our favorite gaming platform, Google Stadia.

I can't remember being this excited for a gaming platform and its future other than when the PS2 launched way back when.

And seeing how Ubisoft is providing nearly all of their most recent games with great support is just great.

Not to mention how Ubisoft always seems to be at the forefront of innovation when it comes to technologies or hardware.

Before we know it, Ubisoft will be providing their newer and later games with full support on integrating Stadia Features such as State-Share, Crowd-Play because StreamConnect is already on full display (Division2) in addition to their own Cross-Save Features.

With all that said, I wish to bring you some more positive news concerning Watch Dogs: Legion as Ubisoft has pushed their latest Patch 4.0 to Stadia yesterday, along with all other platforms.

If you didn't know, Watch Dogs: Legion had some seemingly random FPS dropping bug on Stadia when playing in 4K with HDR turned on.

From what I gathered, people quickly found a temporary workaround with Opening and Closing the in-game Ubisoft Connect window. Or simply relaunching the Stadia Game Instance also took care of this issue for about an hour or two depending on your activities in the game.

The FPS drops on 4K seemed to occur in waves. I had written up a reply to UBISOFT Support through Twitter DM's but then I also thought I'd give the new Patch that just released on Stadia a try to give a complete picture.

Topic: Playing in 4K HDR enabled on STADIA.

BEFORE the 4.0 Patch from Tuesday the 4th of May 2021:

After launching the game and loading into the gameworld we are presented to a little intro to the Operative at hand.

It's during this intro camera pan or cinematic encounter that the FPS already fluctuated considerably. Only for it to become more stable in about 3 to 5 seconds upon taking control of the character.

The FPS drops then seem to smooth out naturally and gameplay commences.

However, in a wider scope, the FPS seemed to drop during busy scenes or when traveling with a faster vehicle, which is understandable with new locations constantly having to render in and those Framedrops stable out and smooth them selves again a second or two later.

The occurrence of the FPS drop that kept dropping worse and worse, making the game nearly unplayable only happened at certain outposts or enemy facilities the player could enter.

It had been reported this issue surfaced in other places for other players as well.

AFTER Patch 4.0 from Tuesday May the 4th:

Immediately there is a considerable difference in performance when loading into the gameworld and watching the operator intro.

There are no noticable frame drops during intro sequences to operatives this time around.

Scene transitions from less busy to busier locations happen more seemlessly.

Driving input seems to have improved also?

Overall I am super thrilled about the latest update, because from the looks of things not only did the 4.0 Patch add the long awaited DLC Operative, it also added quality of life improvements across the board!

I am happy to let you know the performance on Stadia has increased significantly after the 4th of May 2021 Patch!

Do note, this is feedback after 2 to 3 hours of gameplay in 4K with HDR turned on after patch 4.0.

Watch Dogs: Legion plays marvelously in 4K!

Hope this feedback is useful :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Just a quick note on that FPS drop over time and a workaround. This appears to be a consistent problem across multiple if not all Ubisoft games and relates to the Ubisoft Connect overlay. I have experienced this with Division 2, Breakpoint, and obviously Watch Dogs Legion. For all those games the FPS would drop over time during extended gaming sessions. This issue reminded me of memory leak I had experienced with PC games in the past.

The current workaround and temporary fix is, when the FPS dropping starts, open the Ubisoft Connect overlay, wait for it to load, and then exit the overlay to get back in-game. FPS should be ok now. It should be noted that this will fix it only temporarily and you will have to redo this procedure more and more frequently over time. After long sessions (several hours) with Division 2 and Watch Dogs Legion this workaround would not work and the game will still start bugging out i.e. usually audio stuttering, audio failing, or full game crash.

It should also be noted that for Division 2 and Breakpoint this had been fixed at some point without any announcement. I have not seen this issue being official addressed by Ubisoft yet (but of course they may have but i missed it?).

Nonetheless, I hope this is helpful to those not being aware of this workaround yet, and I really hope Ubisoft gets an ultimate fix out for their Connect implementation on Stadia as this is the most annoying consist issue. My other request would be "give us 60 fps performance mode" day one  :slightly_smiling_face:

Cheers,
raz

The drops in fps continue to happen and now there are also audio problems, the game was launched 6 months ago still waiting for a solution to the drops to play it.

And you are certain it's not your connection? Did you even read the detail I went into?

I swear the game runs buttery smooth on my end! The Patch has fixed a lot of the hitches in 4K.

What are you doing in game that would cause your issues? Are You causing mass destruction and amassing a wanted level?

The game has a wider color palette that it needs to stream to you with HDR on and do you even play it at 4K? All this requires a high bitrate to be maintained, keep that in mind if you're wireless.

What you could do to discern your issue is record yohr gameplay with the Stadia Capture Feature and see if you are seeing the same supposed dropped frames.

If not, it's you buddy.

Or try a new save game, do some testing.

I still have the problems too. Only with this game and no other.

It also seems like it always happens at the same places/quests in the game.

Shy as a deer, clever as a fox and the heart of a lion.

Ooof ...

Those framedrops are shocking. Easily into the 1-4 FPS territory. Have you had anything from Ubisoft/Google on this issue @Bigby

I've had these exact same issues with Frame Drops / Stuttering, and apparently they're aware of the issue. However, this has been happening since December, so, in reality, don't hold your breath about a fix coming anytime soon.

Since we’re having these problems with almost all Ubisoft Games and this Ubisoft Connect hack works, it seems that the issue is not the games themselves, but with Ubisoft Connect. Basically Ubisoft Connect doesn’t work for Google Stadia and has to be patched. If the programmers have followed the principles of low coupling then hopefully a fix for Ubisoft Connect would work for all games.

Appreciate it Raz,

hopefully they can make note of it and prevent such "memory leaks".

Bonus points for all the additional info
