Sudden inability to load any game, full google environment 250Mbps internet

Jump to Best Response

Screenshot_20210124-184743.png

Been enjoying stadia since August 2020, a flawless experience on my setup (Google Fiber Webpass 250Mbps and Google Nest Wifi on Chromecast and iPad). Was really looking forward to Hitman 3.

Unfortunately since 1/20, Hitman's release date, i have not been able to load any games on any device with no changes in settings or equipment or service on my part.

I am stuck at the please "check your connection" screen that i had never seen in the prior months of usage. I can select to continue, but have major visual issues and get kicked out of the session within seconds.

I spent a few hours with 3 support services and got moved around by generally well intentioned, but puzzled people (as am I):

1 - Stadia can't seem to see me even attempt to connect, but since I can connect on mobile (5G or LTE) they are pointing to a wifi or internet problem, not a stadia one.

2 - Google Fiber Webpass claims to not be blocking or throttling anything and that they simply provide unfiltered access to anything, the issue is with the router or stadia. I did connect directly to the ethernet port (that's how I get internet) with a laptop and even my phone and got the exact same result (so it can't be a wifi or router issue, but Webpass still claims they changed nothing on their end and that they block nothing). Testing with M-lab still gives me more than 250Mbps.

3 - Google Nest Wifi settings were fine before, but i did add custom DNS, port management, IP address reservations, rebooted, reset, etc. just to test and got the same result. 2 hours with support meant redoing all that and being told everything is fine you need to talk to Stadia.

I can't do a wifi test on someone else wifi because of COVID and I'm running out of ideas.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks!

In a twist, I just loaded Hitman again to follow your directions and it loaded perfectly without need to do anything on both Chrome and the phone (both on wifi).

I will keep monitoring... @HatDroid can you confirm it works for you too?

Same exact problem. Started at the same time as well. I've been using Stadia since the very beginning no problems till about five days ago. I have unlimited data 300mb download. Had internet provider come out change modem and even put new wires in. Still the same problem.

Crazy thing I tried a mobile wireless hotspot with 4mb download and the game launched. With 300mb download all I get is the same screen saying network unstable and game wont launch.

Does the issue happen only on Chromecast? have you tried on a pc with chrome or on a smartphone using the app?

Also have you already tried a chromecast factory reset? (you can follow this guide https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/6254654 )

Hi thanks,

This happens to a Pixel 5, Pixel Slate, and MacBook Pro (it's the same via WiFi or connecting them directly to the internet bypassing the Nest Wifi router entirely). It also occured on an iPad, that i can't test via ethernet though.

The Pixel 5 works via 5G and so does the Pixel Slate with mobile data tethering.

I tried pinging stadia for packet loss and have 0, which makes sense since my ISP, WebPass is owned by google.

The issue seems to be in how Stadia talks to my ISP or vice versa, but not the devices or the router.

Glad to hear I'm not alone.

Hi,

Strange that it doesn't work with your ISP when connected with WiFi or ethernet cable.
The fact that it does work with your Mobile networks makes it appear it is a ISP issue.

Thing you can try if playing on a laptop or mac to install the Stadia Enhanced plugin.
This plugin gives you the option to enable a Stream Monitor.
If that shows lots of drops etc you know you have to contact your ISP.

Sorry we cannot do anything more than pointing to the problem which looks like to be your ISP.

Whats really strange for me is I dont think its the isp as i tried geforce now (another streaming service) and it ran perfectly how stadia was before 5 days ago.

This same problem started happening for me too. I'm in San Francisco, have webpass (1gbps up and down) and a Nest Wifi router.

Whenever I try to start a game (Chrome, Android or CCU) on wifi, it says the connection is unstable. If I switch my phone from wifi to 5g, Stadia runs fine.

I've been using a VPN for the past couple days and it seems to work around the problem (routing through Seattle or LA). I only on a 3 day trial of the VPN, since it seems silly to pay for a VPN to use Stadia.

Two questions for @lellobellox :

- Are things still working for you?

- As far as you can tell, you did nothing in January and the issue resolved itself. So if I try again a few days later things might be better?

@tonyc Confirmed that it works well, just checked (had not much time to play recently)

Yes, the issue came and went. No clear culprit, but definitely no changes on my part (home setup, etc.) and neither Nest or Stadia or Weboass' support had a clue.

All the troubleshooting was a waste of time since it now works with or without special ports open or reserved IPs, etc, just like it did before.

What was the solution?

I have been having the same issue with webpass and stadia (no vpn involved) for the last few days. Tried everything possible from my side including using wired, multiple different devices, trying 4k videos on the same chromecast(works seamlessly)
But I am not able to play games. Stadia support asked me to add port forwarding to a particulular port. Even that did not help
I upgraded firmware of my router and tried when only this one device was connected.
I was able to play for weeks without issues before this started a week back

If I switch to my mobile network, immediately starts running games properly.

I am sure now it's webpass or a bug in stadia( which also can be ruled out because I did not see many other people having the same problem except this thread)

I haven't found a solution. It's still not loading for me. Stadia support said they would open a ticket to investigate.

I agree, it's some combination of webpass and stadia that is causing the problem.

An update to this thread. Stadia is now working for me!

I am able to run games at 1080p without any frames dropped. I'm not sure what changed, but I'm going to follow up with Stadia support.

Chipping in here. I'm on webpass, ethernet connection (~600 up/down), also located in the Bay Area, Macbook pro.  Same problem, started about a week ago for me.

Happening again.

No changes on my part...

Will try again tomorrow.

This is happening to me as well, I just opened a ticket with Stadia.

We did find that streaming works completely fine if I'm on a VPN (I used the Google One VPN on my phone).

So I'm going to guess it's on Webpass's side, and they're throttling it.

For the time being, I might just try to utilize my VPN on what I can

Huh, that's weird. I just checked (haven't been using Stadia much lately), and it's still working for me. Not sure why it works for some people but not others.

Sadly it is not so weird, you need to consider that Stadia is a service spread across the world and running on different clusters, so someone can have an issue while connecting from San Francisco while someone else connecting from London could be completely fine.

Day 3 and counting...

I don't have a VPN to test, but this would point the finger at Weboass' @JoelEblin .

They denied over the phone any type of throttling, but it would solve the mystery.

Thanks

Tried on VPN and it's working now.  Maybe connecting to/disconnecting from a VPN confuses Stadia somehow, maybe they're routing traffic to clusters depending on previous IP addresses, and changing them messes with overall latency.  No clue.

Started working again yesterday. Flawless.

Very odd.
