Stadia menu on android with 3rd party controller

Jump to Best Response

Hi

this may be really simple but I cannot find any information on how to bring up the stadia menu (friend list etc) when in game using the android app.

pressing the home button on a 3rd party controller connected via Bluetooth does nothing.

i realise that you tap the icon from the home page in the app but how do you access it in game?

thanks in advance

Hey folks, I recommend taking a look at the Stadia-compatible gamepads and screen Help Center article. Regarding your issue with the Stadia menu, please note that the "Home" button is not guaranteed to work on all third-party gamepads. Feel free to submit this issue as feedback at the end of your gaming session. Thanks for understanding!

Did you ever figure this out? I just ran into the same issue when trying Stadia on an experimental non-official Android Phone (old Samsung Galaxy S6 I had lying around) for the first time with an Xbox One Bluetooth controller.

Here’s what I’ve tried:

The back button on the phone itself gives me the options for “Resume game” and “Exit game” when I tap it. Pressing and holding the back button does nothing (this was my first guess on how to get the Stadia menu). The other two Android buttons on the phone both exit the app.

On the Xbox One Bluetooth controller all of the buttons work as expected but the Xbox logo/guide button brings me back to the phone home screen and pressing and holding it activates Google Assistant on the phone. As far as I can tell there’s no way to customize this.

Tapping anywhere on the phone screen while in game does nothing. Press and hold does nothing and swiping from the bottom, left or right does nothing either.

So, as far as I can tell, there is absolutely no way to access the Stadia overlay menu when using a 3rd party controller unless I’m missing something.

Hopefully someone at Google is aware of this issue and fixes it soon because the Stadia experience with this phone and Xbox One Bluetooth controller is excellent otherwise.

Sadly I still haven't found anything that makes this possible.

I'm sure we're not the only ones and Google must be aware of it... maybe in a future update it will be possible

Hopefully. Meanwhile if I load a game without any controller connected I can easily open and use the Stadia menu and friend list with the new on-screen controls. Unfortunately I just don’t think there’s a way to open that when using a 3rd party controller at this point.

@ChrisFromGoogle it really sounds like you're not listening to the problem.  I've read the article you've linked and it does say that the home button is not supported for the Xbox controller.  I get that.  The problem is that the stadia app provides no other way to access the in game home menu when using this controller.  Is there really no way we could get a faded overlay stadia button similar to the onscreen controls?  Or maybe we swipe down from the top of the screen?   It really doesn't matter.  We just need some way to access these menus.

I have the same problem. The only work around that I see right now is to disconnect your controller forcing the onscreen controls to appear (which has a stadia button), then you can reconnect your controller after doing whatever you have to do in the strips menu.

Honestly this is a pretty dumb solution. IMO stadia on android should just present the option to click a menu with an onscreen tap when there are no on screen controls up, shouldn't be overly hard to implement since they already have onscreen controls working.

Hopefully the workaround works for you!

Still strange, I had the Xbox-logo-button working for the overlay menu, until end of november. Whole december it kicked me back to android home screen. Updated the firmware of the Xbox handcontrol today. Afterwards the button does nothing but emitting White light.
