Stadia input latency. Will it ever get better?

Jump to Best Response

I was a founder for stadia but i couldn't help but notice that their latency input hasn't gotten any better. Though i did see some games improve in latency post their launch date. The overall cloud gaming latency doesn't cut it for me. At times it's playable and adaptable but you just can't compete with traditional gaming, especially shooter games. I want stadia to succeed but i can only enjoy certain games without noticing the lag. I think stadia should continue to improve in cloud gaming but should offer customer to play in their local machines. What are y'all thoughts?

Hello,

Hope this can help but it seems like after analysis that not every game suffer from input lag, and I wonder why.
I can admit input lag isn't always the same, depending on the game.

I have 156 games on Stadia, I personnally tested many games that I have both on Stadia and Steam. i7-1165G7, 32GB Ram, RTX 2070 Super.
Just FYI, got 770 Mbps and a very stable connexion near Paris. Using Stadia Stats, I have between 1ms - 4ms while in game in 4K.

Dead By Daylight : I can only admit there is an input lag in this game. Skillchecks are way harder. Is it unplayable ? Still no. You can play and enjoy the game once you understand this little input lag, you just adapt your skillcheck and get the same reactivity as if it was on your computer.
Destiny 2 : That's insane. I'm not seeing any input lag. Really the same as tested on Steam. And I wonder, when I see that, if there isn't something to do with devs, more than Stadia.
Final Fantasy 15 : There is a little input lag compare to the game on Steam.
Ys 9 & Ys 8 : Incredible as Destiny 2. There is no input lag at all. The game is pretty fun played on Stadia.
Assassin's Creed : Valhalla : There is a little input lag but it can be resolved using the Performance setup directly in game.
Doom Eternal : No input lag at all, like Destiny 2.
Elder Scrolls Online : I feel a little input lag, the game seems poor too, compare to Steam.
Darksiders Genesis : No input lag at all. For real.
Ark Survival Evolved : I feel a huge input lag compare to others title but I wonder if it's not linked to FPS too. It's the same for e.g. in many FarCry on Stadia, capped at 30 fps.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider : I feel a little input lag (Note : Tested VS Epic Games)
Everspace : A catastrophe. I feel a huge input lag, game is full of bug on Stadia, but really fun on Steam. For me it's the worst portage ever on Stadia.
Little Nightmare : I feel a little input lag. (Didn't test Little Nightmare 2)
Baldur's Gate III : I feel a bit sad for the Stadia portage. There isn't any input lag but the way you move the camera on Stadia reveal a high problem of cloud gaming. It's like the mouse polling rate or movement doesn't fit the reality, making the game a bit uncomfortable on Stadia while this problem doesn't occur on Steam.
Octopath Traveler : Pretty hard to feel input lag here, tested on Switch, not Steam. I don't think there is any kind of input lag.
Resident Evil 7 : There is definitively an input lag on Stadia.
Assassin's Creed : Odyssey : There isn't any input lag, or it's really low. Game is really fun both on Stadia and Steam.
PUGB : I didn't noticed any input lag, but pretty funny to play against other Stadians that doesn't have the network to play on Stadia, if you know what I mean, lol.

As of now I'm only buying 60fps game, using this website as a reference.
30fps game suffer way more from input lag but it's only a theory and only my opinion.

I think there is something to do to reduce input lag, I just wonder if it's on Stadia-side or devs side.
30fps on cloud gaming is, in every case, an error for me, and nothing on the Stadia Store inform the client that the game is capped at 30 or 60 fps at this moment (tell me if I'm wrong).

Hi @CyberValve

Interesting topic! :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:
I must admit I don't have that much notice of the input lag, but I am no Pro gamer or such by any means.
Not sure what kind of internet connection you are having at home and if you tried it at other locations?

I only have a bad experience on AC Syndicate, with such a bad input latency, other than that I find it fully enjoyable on any other games including multiplayer competitive games.

What? The input latency is really low here. I mean it’s lower than playing a game local on my PC with vsync on.

are you on drugs? no way in hell a game running on a local machine has higher latency than stadia ......

Test have been done to show stadia input lag is around the same as playing on ps5 or xbox,

I definitely notice the input lag on RE7. I'd say your list is pretty accurate. I have 100/10 download/upload speed so my experience differs a little. I try playing wired for the most part since wifi is almost seems as unplayable. In short, it sounds like latency could be an internet infrastructure and/or developers issue. If every game is optimized like destiny 2 or division 2 that would be great! I'm still eerie if games like Apex or warzone would be worth playing in stadia.
