So today we have the official app coming. I wanted to collect feedback here regarding the experience with Sony TVs. Because so far I only see people having terrible stuttering problems, be it with sideloading, or with the cast trick that worked to early access the new app, etc. Also important to know which models we are facing the problems.
EDIT: Opened a thread on Bravia Subreddit to discuss the current gen Chip performance: https://www.reddit.com/r/bravia/comments/o6dw75/android_tv_chip_performance_on_xh_series/
EDIT 2: codecs offered by xh95 model: (includes vp9)

Maybe we can try to create a case here, I will start
Model: KD-65XH9505. (Europe) from November/2020
Sideloading the mobile app? yes (this and last year) - stuttering
Casting from phone to new app? yes - stuttering
Works normally with CCU - yes, since the beginning no stutterring
After trying out the Developer options tweak, the stuttering is gone. (it does not mean the quality will be 100% now! but considerably better)
- turn on the developer mode (go to settings -> about -> keep selecting the row Build number for a few times until it says "you are a developer")
- Now you can go back to settings -> Developer options -> Force GPU rendering change to on
- Also in developer options , Disable HW overlays change to on
Try out, maybe restart the TV if needed, but should work right away. Greatly improvement on stuttering
NOTE: For my experience it did not make it perfect like it was on CCU. But it is definitely better and playable until official support for Sony arrives,
EDIT: Apparently upgrading to Android 10 / newest firmware also fixes the problems without the need of developer option tweak. I have an european xh95 model and I was not able to perform the manual USB update due to errors. Feel free to try this option, while the firmware update doesn't come automatically for your device.
Feel free to first just try a SW update and then try the Developer tweaks
UDADATE 30.09: all mentioned issues seem to be solved. I will update the post asap with firmware version
TV: Sony KD55XH9505 (Europe / Jan 2021)
Casting from phone to new app? yes - stuttering
Works normally with CCU - yes, since the beginning no stutterring
TV: KD-49XE8396 (UK)
All fine on CCU
Not even sure if I'd describe the results on the TV app as "stuttering". Tried the division 2 and it runs at about 2 FPS.
Appeared to be in full 4k HDR... But so few frames. Odd that it didn't degrade quality to up the frame rate.
Hi @artdias90,
I don't own a Sony TV but there are still some variables with the TV's.
Think it is worth a try to connect your TV with a ethernet cable as most TV's WiFi chips are not the best ones.
Did you try using a ethernet cable?
Yes it's been wired all along. I tried also different picture modes, changed video motion options, turned off HDR , 4K, etc. nothing
Thanks for your reply.
I am not sure if the support is official for your TV, but let's hope it will get better soon.
From the Blog post about Google/Android TV and Stadia:
For this initial launch, Stadia will be officially supported on the following devices:
As for Android TV OS devices not on this list, you can opt into experimental support to play Stadia. While this feature is still in development and not every Android TV OS device will work perfectly, you can now try out Stadia and play your favorite games on more screens than ever before.
So for now it isn't working fine but there will be updates from time to time. I don't know if these Sony TV's you own will be officially supported but let's hope some updates will fix your issues. ![]()
Thanks, yes indeed Sony is not in the list. But so is LG for example, and I don't see this specific kind of issue happening with the folks who sideloaded OR did the cast trick yesterday with a LG TV.
I just wanted to find out, if there is someone with a working setup with Sony TV + Stadia app, so we can build the case better.
LG TVs won't be on the list because they don't run any flavour of Android.
Not sure what the cast trick would be with LG, as they don't support (chrome)casting either.
There is a WebOS Stadia app coming for LG TVs in the second half of 2021.
On the same TV, with the same WiFi, I can play GeForce Now for hours without issues... So I doubt it's a WiFi problem...
Looks like the WiFi isn't a issue indeed.
Let's hope the Stadia app will be updated so it will be working correctly on your device. ![]()
Disconnecting the CCU reduce the stutter significantly. But the game is still not enough fluid.
We are talking about native Sony TV built in Chromecast problem specifically.
Does not concern plugged CCU or CCWgTV, please look for a specific post for that matter
I'm talking about the built in Crhomecast in Sony TV using the Stadia app.
TV: Sony KD55XH9505 (Europe / Jan 2021)
Casting from phone to new app? yes - stuttering
Works normally with CCU - yes, since the beginning no stutterring
I updated my post writing that the stutter on the Stadia app on the TV is reduced if I disconnect the CCU.
Can you share if the new stadia app for android tv works well with the sony tv? I am just thinking about buying one
I wanted to wait for the final announcement just to be sure. And no, it's not working fine with Sony TVs. And Boone knows if a patch can fix it, or it's a hardware limitation.
I'm having the same problem here. I don't own a CCU, have only previously used stadia through a browser, but the frame rate on my x950h is terrible, single digits. The still picture quality high def and looks perfect but it feels like there's a problem with playback of the video stream on this TV that causes the stutter.
Stadia claims the wifi connection is excellent, reports no problem, and using wifi for other similar setups such as Steamlink works without issue.
Model: KD-49XF9005 (2019)
Sideloading the mobile app? no
Casting from phone to new app? yes - stuttering
Start from official Stadia app? Yes - stuttering
Works normally with CCU - yes, since the beginning no stutterring
Model: Sony KD-55XH9296 (2020)
Running Android 9 and latest FW: 604661
Using Ethernet and official Stadia Controller.
Installed the Stadia app from the play store on the TV and it warned me it's not supported and that it might not run well...
It was right...it stutters badly so Destiny 2 & Cyberpunk are pretty much unplayable.
Will we get an update later to make it work on Sony TVs?
Model: XR-6580CJ. (2021) North America
Sideloading the mobile app? No
Casting from phone to new app? No - Downloaded App on TV
Works normally with CCU - yes No Stuttering (Unplugged CCU)
Running Chromecast with Google TV Wirelessly

Everybody with a x90 model could give a try and report here ?

The developer mode tweaks fixes the stutter on the X950H but causes a number of other problems.
Firstly there is a noticeable picture quality loss - not sure why but it seems to affect Sony's picture processing when these options are toggled. Secondly you can't keep these settings on for general purpose without causing issues in other apps: Disney+ video is black when disabling HW overlays, for instance, which means you have to toggle these settings before and after launching stadia.
Thank you for your reply. Yes indeed, there are side effects. I am currently evaluating the firmware upgrade which bypasses the developer mode changes, and will update my best answer accordingly.
Did you give a try on a manual Firmware update via USB? I tried several times today, with 3 different USB sticks - always get the same "you cannot perform the update with this USB device" message. I formatted all 3 devices as FAT32 as recommended.
How do I do all that? Where do I find the developer options?
See my updated best answer with detailed instructions.
How did you update Sony 95x series with Android 10? It hasn't been released yet for Sony.. Link?
As I mentioned in my answer, the european models did not get a x95 android update yet. No indication if it will ever get one. I wrote based on other user's answers, my personal case it's like you, im stuck with the developer options tweaks which have side effects in other apps. I haven't followed the stadia on tv updates so perhaps they already worked on x95 european models
Where can I get the Android 10 firmware update for my Sony XH90 (European)?
I tried the native Stadia App and it is lagging very much, stuttering and won't offer 5.1 sound.
With my CCU connected I get less lag, 60 FPS and 5.1 Sound.
