Stadia Colour Banding (Compression)

Jump to Best Response

Hi all.

New to Stadia using the premiere edition. It works smoothly and all AT 4K HDR etc except for the single problem of seeing really bad Colour Banding in dark scenes (tested with Hitman & GYLT) The banding are big squares too and usually within dark corners, bright colourful scenes you can't make it out.

Now I think I've read every single thread on this across Stadia & Reddit, there's not single fix all approach it seems. If anyone thinks there is one please let me know.

The banding is the same across 2 monitors, a 4K TV and even my smart phone, using the app on chromecast ultra and the browser (also tried everything there)

I know this is to do with compression on the Stadia end but that should noted in the Google setup to save users hastle and stress trying to sort it.

Im using Chromecast Ultra, 4K TV and ethernet cable at 50/ 60mbps speeds.

Any solutions welcome and I hope they either up the bit rate or mention this problem in the trouble shooting as it's very common.

Its hugely noticeable and something I hope will be sorted with how they send compressed video.

Thanks!

Unfortunately it's just a brute fact of the medium. There is little to be done until Google can further advance it's compressions tech. Stadia has both advantages and disadvantages, and we have to decide which are enough to keep us.

Thanks!

I think I just needed some reassurance about it.

I'm really enjoying the service though, I've had a decent connection even on WiFi.

Just got Jedi fallen order or Rise of the Star Raider as I like to call it.

It works a dream at 60fps and I'm sure after comping gameplay on Youtube it's on high quality.

Just hope they release a lot more games for it, would really like cloudpunk, had it on switch and the graphics were like superman 64 level bad.

Cyberpunk next though! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Yeah, same problem..banding and compression artifacts are really strong...same problem on GFNow though.

Funny thing is that if I open screenshot taken in Stadia in Windows 10 default image browser - banding and artficats are not visible - as if it was applying some filter to remove them...wondering if such filtering couldn't be applied by Stadia on client side (as an option, as it might require some processing power).

Screenshots directly from Stadia:

Regarding banding - strange thing - if I open screenshot directly on Stadia - it looks like this:

artifacts.png

Compression artifacts and strong banding...this is how game looks on Stadia during gameplay.

If I open same screenshot under Ubuntu's default image browser (same effecto on Windows 10 "Pictures" app) - it looks like this:

mo-banding.png
- banding is almost completly gone...

Anyone knows what might be happening here?

I was wondering the same things.

I think you cannot see the banding in screenshots because they're taken directly from the machine where the game is running and then uploaded up to your stadia account.

The banding is caused by the 8bit compression in the streaming process not originally in the game.

Yeah, but I'm looking at the exact same screenshot, just opened under different applications - first directly under Stadia, second - under OS default image browser...

Wondering if it has sth to do with color encoding...

Anyway, it looks really bad....All "dark" games look horrible..whole intro to RDR2, Cyberpunk at dusk/night/dawn, Star Wars: Fallen Order...I've bought these games yesterday (Christmas sale) and I think I will return them back...
