Has anyone bought the game to test this?
sony is not a good test for crossplay.
someone with pc version or xbox, but i thinks is most probable pc - stadia crossplay is possible
I submitted a ticket to Rockstar to ask the same question and I am not sure if they answered my question specifically...
I feel like I kind of got an auto response for character transfers...
So does rdr2 stadia online servers play in the same servers as pc players? Or is it like destiny 2 and only stadia players are seen online?
will there be enough stadia users to actually find people to play with?
i wasn’t really aware that stadia doesn’t use pc servers. With so few stadia users atm I’m hoping these online games don’t become ghost towns
Well I took the plunge and bought Red Dead 2 for the Stadia anyways. I can confirm that the PC and the Stadia version of Red Dead Online are two different things. I had to start a whole new character and it looks like I am only playing with Stadia folks. Oh well ![]()
Stadia games the servers are in the stadia infrastructure. It enables extremely minimal latency from game client to server for all stadia players as stadia players are basically playing on a lan network.
It is technologically possible for other platforms to connect to stadia servers for cross play. That said Google may not have any game developers doing that yet as it likely would require heavily modifying the versions of the game for other consoles.
Google likely though would not want Stadia players to play on non Stadia hosted servers as they would lose the performance enhancements they can make.
@DarthButternutz Can you say anything about the population in Red Dead Online yet? Are there enough players to have a good multiplayer experience?
@flx It seems a little low to be honest. I haven’t played any of the showdown series or free roam events yet, but I haven’t been able to get a full party for any of the Story missions and I am about half-way done with those. I’ll try some pvp matches today and report back.
By the way, the game plays pretty well. It looks better on my PC for sure, but at least I get to play at work on my laptop and that’s really all I wanted to do. It’s just a shame that I can’t play my PC character.
@DarthButternutzThank you for your response. It would be nice if you could share your experiences regarding the pvp matches in concern of the population.
@flx Ok, I tried joining any of the pvp matches a few times throughout the day. It’s pretty lite on folks. I spent a bunch of time alone, sitting in a lobby waiting for players to even join a match. Most times, the match would start with only 2 to 4 players (including myself). Getting the “place in top 3” daily was easy to get today
I am curious how the weekend is going to be...
@DarthButternutz Thank you for your report. So if I am mainly interested in playing online with others, RDR2 is not the best choice for me?
@flx If playing Show Downs is something you really like doing then yes, it looks like not enough folks have bought the game yet. I personally like doing the Free Roam stuff and hunting and that sort of thing. I don’t know what the max number of players is for a Free Roam lobby, but there always seems to be about 20ish people in there each time.
If I had to guess, I bet the game is going to go on sale before the end of the year is enough people haven’t bought it. I thought I could hold out and wait for that to happen... but I was weak.
20 people in a lobby isnt bad, it use to be from 10-25 on ps4. I realy consider to get it on stadia too, just shame Rockstar cant make a crossplay, since im on level 130 on ps4 and bought everything.
About showdowns it depend on ps4 too, sometimes it rarly get bigger then 2vs2, sometimes nothing. I think this mode is unpopular because if the ability cards and how heavy it feels with this auto aim engine they use.
After reading a test about rdr2 on stadia i see it have better response time then consoles! Almost same as PC. Want to test it out and see if the game feels lighter on stadia.
About grapics i Wonder if it could be better then ps4 pro? Must say the grapics on PlayStation is not that great compared to PC and one x.
Would miss some of my friends and the lvl 130 character, but it would be very Nice to play it where i want.
@flx At launch day the red dead online population was tiny.
It's now pretty decent in my opinion.
Gameplay of red dead feels great, game looks great, albeit they say it's not true 4k.
@DarthButternutz, @TheWebTech Thanks to both of you. I think I will buy it in the next few days ![]()
Actually in call of duty modern warfare, I play against ps4, xbox one and pc players all at the same time, while im on my pc. And I can see what controller they use aswell.
Cross play is there future. Because there are too many platforms. And we all wanna overcome the division. At some point. It will simply happen.
But in destiny 2 stadia, it is stadia only players. So if an mmo cannot even cross play in stadia, I doubt red dead redemption will. But I do not know because I've not got that game yet. Will get it soon tho. Amazing game.
@Greenhill
I think you're missing what I'm saying.
Stadia definitely supports cross-play. It is up to the developers to build it into their games, this is the case with ALL platforms.
Since Stadia from day 1 has been encouraging developers to build in cross-play, you can expect it will be a feature of games in the future on Stadia.
What I was saying is that with Stadia, Google likely wants developers to use their stadia servers to host the games for cross play. That would give Google the ability to continue enhancing the games for stadia players.
There is also no technological reason stadia players couldn't play on another server hosted off of Stadia but it would not give Stadia players the same level of performance.

I think cross play for red dead online makes not much sense. If Rockstar would implement it with the possibilities provided by Stadia RDO would have a very unique experience on Stadia compared to other platforms. On Stadia the NPC count shouldn't be a problem, also the limitation to 32 players/server wouldn't be necessary. I think this would change everything. In a few years cloud gaming will be the best way to play any MMO.
Same for Cyberpunk. Would make a lot fun to play on a server with 1000+ players in night city (if they will ever release a multiplayer version ![]()
I dont think it is and personally I love it that way. The PC version is full of hackers and griefers so its nice to see a smaller player base
