Poor WIFI Connection on Mobile phones resulting in lagging gameplay - deemed unplayable.

Dear all

I write to bring to the attention of Google and also request feedback from others surrounding WIFI playing Stadia on Mobile.

I got a Stadia at Xmas. I have Virgin media internet with 232 mbps download and 21 mbps upload. On Chromecast Ultra, using Wifi it works flawlessly, I love it. On Laptop, using Wifi, it works a dream. However, on mobile, to be more precise, 2 flagship phones, it is unplayable on Wifi. Mobile data it works perfectly, but not on WiFi.

I initially suspected my S21 Ultra was faulty and had bad hardware as it would drop out regularly and glitch at least every ten seconds so bad it makes it unplayable. So, I decided to sell my S21 Ultra and just brought a Google Pixel 6 Pro 256gb, thinking this will solve the issue, but its exactly the same!!

It must be a software issue for Android 12 I am guessing. It is however very frustrating as I would have presumed Google Pixel Pro would be the best phone for this platform but I am wrong. I have left feedback for google twice surrounding this but no one is responding or giving any info. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I have the TP-Link Deco M9 mesh network system. I have applied application priority (QoS) to the phone and controller only. This does not help or make a difference. I have also set the generic QoS to focus solely on gaming and streaming and its still unplayable. If I cannot get this working, I shall be selling the stadia and cancelling the membership. It was the mobile element I liked as my kids never come off the PS5 or PC .

I also set quality to 720p and its still the same. I have exhausted of options to try now and accept its never going to be great, but why? The phones, internet, wifi is all top quality, but it cannot cope. I have tried the phone at work on my office network too and the matter remains the same.

Hello @Steveo1986

That is pretty strange. Do you know about the Pixel 6 Pro issues like described HERE?
Do you use WiFi 5GHz on your phones? Or do they connect to a 2.4GHz WiFI network? :slightly_smiling_face:

Just tried this and it made no difference. Still got the same issue.

However, last night I decided to try it out on my guest network and it appeared to work a treat?! Meaning, unless it was coincidental, that the issue is something on my network. Everyone was asleep and I monitored all devices on the WiFi. Only things showing data transfer was all my Google smart home devices (I have loads lol) and predominantly nest hello doorbell. I do have that set to high bandwidth, but I have 200+ Mbps and 20 upload. So really shouldn't be an issue. I shall review again tomorrow to test this again to be sure, but if it works, then how does it work fine on my guest network but not on main... Bloody tech does my head in :slightly_smiling_face:

Cheers for trying to help too. So appreciate it.

Hi @Steveo1986

Had the same issue... Split my WiFi networks up in one SSID for 2.4GHz usage and a SSID for the 5GHz. Connected all of my home automation and not Stadia devices to the 2.4GHz network so the 5GHz is free for almost Stadia only. Maybe this is a workaround for your issue as well? :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Hi. I'm having the same issue. However mine is causing an issue if I'm on WiFi or mobile 5g.

My virgin media broadband is speed testing at just under 500mb, and my 5g is speed testing at over 500mb. But as soon as I try and play any game via the app on my OnePlus 8 pro running Android 11, it has connection issues.

I dont have this issue when playing anything on Xbox xcloud on the same phone and same connection, so it's clearly a stadia issue.

I have experienced similar issues when phone was connected to bluetooth earphones. Extreme wifi interference and lag somehow caused from the wireless bluetooth earphones or earbuds.

Otherwise wifi interference. People walking with wifi connection past my connection, that can cause some lags in my experience but that would be much more minor than the above mentioned experience. if its wifi. 5g, never had an issue, 4g neither I think.

Otherwise, check if phone and apps are all uptodate.

I just checked on my phone, new android 12 update too. Works simply fine. oppo find 3x.

But updates can certainly cause problems for many reasons. In which case it would have to wait a few days, as some how update bugs are often fixed over time.

If all else fails contact stadia support maybe?

I personally have never had an issue with any phone ever, except xiaomi brand does not acknowledge bluetooth controllers. And well... Some phones literally do not even have an audio jack and my galaxy bud had unplayable latency and my old jbl wireless earphones caused massive wifi lag for some reason. Thats about it. I just use audio jack wired earphones nowadays.
