Hey there everyone, I wanted to chime in with the response I posted to my post on Stadia's subreddit:

"Hi everyone, I completely understand your emotions surrounding the news, so I wanted to chime in with a couple more thoughts. Please note that Stadia.com, Stadia Pro, and your games aren’t going anywhere. In fact, we’ll keep bringing more games to the platform and Stadia Pro. We had an exciting launch with Cyberpunk 2077 back in December, and the Stadia team is dedicated to bringing even more titles to the platform this year."

...Google, I know you all knew this was going to be poorly received, but I don't know if you knew how poorly. To have this news hit after a couple months of the only good press Stadia ever got is really, really not great. The promise of Stadia was games that could only happen in the cloud, not just everybody else's games running (at best) as good as or slightly worse than on the competition. And a year in, you're shutting down the only source those magic experiences were going to come from. No 3rd party is going to make a Stadia exclusive game that needs their distributed computing to function when Google themselves won't do it even after building two studios with that purpose. We might get more neat side features like the picture-in-picture stuff, but I expect that's gonna be it.

This is a reasonable thing to be disappointed about. It's a huge (speculative, but the speculation came from Google) promised upside to the platform that is no longer going to happen. As a founder I have plenty of stuff I'm still actively playing and enjoying on the platform, I'm not goin' anywhere, but it's hard to see how this doesn't trigger a massive wave of "told you so" negative press and make user retention a nightmare.

Everything Google has said publicly for the last year, in the very rare instances they've chosen to say anything outside a blog post at all, has been 100% committed to the message of long term, confident investment in this platform. And a lot of us bought that, because, you know, you're Google. You have the money. You did the R&D. You hired Jade Raymond.

I think you just shot a lot of that credibility right in the knees, folks.

All that said, Grace, thank you for your tireless commitment to this community. I'm sure it absolutely sucks having to handle this news.

@HEDGE30 been a dedicated fanboi for years now, maybe it is time for a change - too many disappointments, and they really have lost that "don't be evil" ethos.

Those new M1 chips are slinky too...

Personally I have no doubt at all that iPhone is significantly better than any other phone. I would not have anything other than an iPhone. The good news is you can still play stadia on the iPhone...If you do buy one!

Google killed Google Music for me with Youtube Music because of the non support for young family members on YTM
Google killed Chromebooks for me because of the increased complexity with Android and Linux app support instead of improving web apps (=> Chromebooks are now more complicated as Windows)

Google just killed my trust in Stadia with the decision and announcement. I will keep playing my already licensed games and Pro for the time being. I doubt that I will license any new game from the shop before I see more success to onboard much, much more third party games. When it's now the strategy to work with partners only, Google needs  to show success in this strategy first.

So whatever statement Stadia announces, for the moment I don't care because the announcement of big new AAA games for Stadia is really thin.

I think time will tell. It’s obviously a massive undertaking resource wise and from a financial point to make quality games from scratch and if the Stadia base is still small then it’s makes no sense to plough money in to development if they won’t make that money back.

Focus on the technology, make Stadia the go to cloud service and grow the fan base over time without the extra expense of creating exclusive games makes more sense. Don’t forget Xbox are buying up developers left, right and centre and only have a handful of in house games being developed for such a massive company,

If big AAA titles still pour into Stadia on their actual release dates and not months after then we are in great shape, if not then I wouldn’t advise buying anymore titles on the platform as the writing would be on the wall. That would be a huge disappointment as it is a great platform with massive potential.

I am new to Stadia and am loving the experience so far. Stadia has been a godsend to me as I am unable to afford one of those shiny new games consoles.

I was fortunate enough to receive roughly £60 in Google Play Credit as Christmas gifts so as to buy games on this platform and was looking forward to doing just that!

Then came this announcement, just one month into the new year!

Having already previously purchased Cyberpunk 2077 and Jedi: Fallen Order (for a phenomenaly low price!) this announcement has filled me with dread and I am now reluctant to spend said remaining credit on games for Stadia (Not that Google would be bothered by this. They've already got the money. It's not as if I can spend Google Play credit anywhere else other than at Google), nor do I feel comfortable spending what little of my own money I can afford on Stadia games.

The announcement does read as if it step 1 of a gradual winding down process. Phil Harrison had tried to present this news as a positive but it clearly is not. Stadia users know this and the industry media know this too. I honestly think that Google are going to honour any business dealings they have with 3rd party publishers and developers and once done Stadia will be buried. Google won't admit to this of course because they would pretty much prefer it if we continue to give them money untill then. Who is going to buy a game that releases on Stadia in Septemer if they know that the service is going to be axed by the following January? And honestly, I would. It's just that once Google pulls the plug then it's no more Cyberpunk 2077, or Fallen Order, and any other games I acquire up to that point for me. They're gone forever and I am out of pocket. And it's a tons of money wasted. Money that could've went towards paying for a traditional video games console. Or money that could've been spent elsewhere!

At this point without clear intententions and expectations set by Google and it's Stadia team, I think it would be wise to hold off purchasing games going forward on Stadia. If this does nothing but hastens the end then sobeit.

My fears could be unfounded but there is nothing at all in that announcement that suggests otherwise. If Google are intending to seriously support Stadia for the long run then they need to clearly set expectations. We need them to provide a road map or something akin to one. And provide answers to questions that everyone has at this. And if not then it needs to step up and do the right thing and start offering refunds and stop accepting new users.

What Stadia also needs are exclusive games and a vision. For me it is not a vision if you just want to be a platform for other partners. Stadia has a future for sure, but I'm not sure if it's with Google. I would bet on it.

They still dont belive in stadia.

I decided to chime in because like many, I'm really worried about the future of Stadia.

The more I read Harrison's post, the more I think Stadia as we know it will be over within one to two years at the most.
My feeling is that Google no longer intends to invest directly in the project, and they have decided to offer their infrastructures to third party companies (selling or renting, I don't know).
Google has developed a platform that works very well and will try to capitalize on the investment by offering it to third parties,

I hope I'm wrong, because otherwise it will mean that we have just been used as guinea pigs to test the functioning of the service.

As far as it concerns me, I'm not going to invest other money in Stadia until Google will show us true committment to the project, to begin with by providing a road map.

I completely agree with the Nerf report. When I read the news I thought it was a good and transparent business decision that wouldn't have any impact on the future of Stadia. I hope this creates resources for pushing Stadia in other far more important areas like availability (in retail, more partnerships with TV brands, would be an ideal product for bundles like get stadia for a few months with your new tv, internet plan etc). Let's not forget Stadia comes pre installed on LG TVs that's huge compared to the actual decision. What's bugs me a little about Googles general strategy are two things:

  • Transition times: Allo to Google Messages, GM to YTM, often costumers have to suffer through transition times where we get inferior products to what we had. For me it always turned out fine but the transition times were a tad too long (I'm looking at you YTM you're still not where we want you)
  • Switzerland: Personal issue but driving me crazy sometimes. Switzerland is Europe's center of fast and cheap internet and would be ideal for testing bandwidth hungry devices. Sadly Google Store Switzerland is always very late or doesn't offer many products like Pixel Phones at all. Please Google. Switzerland, don't forget us. You have offices and stuff here I lived next to a google office for years but couldn't get your consumer grade products.

I lost all faith in stadia and will not buy a game anymore. They already have the name to kill lots of apps/services fast and they make that feeling stronger with this announcement. I will go for xbox/ps5 and if those are end off life I will see if stadia is still around. But will not invest in it anymore till I see that google is really committed in stadia.

They going from one bad marketing to the next bad marketing announcement. Good going google...

Well, I am very happy with STADIA's new plans.

And I congratulate Phil Harrison on the decision of the new course of the platform.

Now I know that we will have more and more great games, better service. So I will buy the big titles here and buy a new LG with native Stadia.

And I wish the best of luck to those responsible for the final year of Stadia, I hope they find a place where their inspiration, ideas and art can flourish.

Let's be Real, in all reality you would think this is a bad thing. But in my opinion I believe it's better that there doing this. In comparison to Xcloud stadia is better Quality in performance. If stadia Focuses there funds to make the platform better And Focus on getting more Third Party games such as Apex as an example they will easily rise above. They just need games that people actually want to play and not all of these low level starter games. No offense to the growing small game companies. Give me some Apex I'd play at work :expressionless_face:. As far as exclusives why right now? Get the Fan base up through third party titles then come back to exclusives it's not rocket science.

1,5 years later they decide they need to focus on bringing more 3th party games. That was something they needed to focus on from the beginning.  Within a year the drop studio's they invest money in. The marketing was bad from the beginning and still is.  What I see for the future if players stick and google still invest: player paying for pro, and paying for every other gaming studio. 15 for google, 15 for ea , 15 for ubisoft etc. And then probably extra for the newest games and only monthly subscriptions and no more selling and owning the game. A future I do not like I want to buy one game and own. Before a us citizen say you already do not own it.... Not every country is the same. In eu you own something you buy and we can even sell the digital game to others

I'm sorry I disagree. Why would they have multiple subscription plans for different companies for different games? That's dumb no company that is top and thriving is doing that. In this case you would be right everyone would be done with stadia. Not all the developers were let go they were placed in different parts of the company. 150 people is nothing in comparison to a real let go of a failing company. And let's be real there was only like One good exclusive. What stadia needs to do is to show off the power of cloud by putting a high tiered constant played game on there platform such as COD, Battlefield, Apex etc. PLEASE give me Apex or  something I play Daily. Not these boring single player games and outdated multiplayer games. Like dude I'm sorry but Its not rocket science. They can always bounce back to exclusives once they get a bigger fan base. Stadia will fail if they keep focusing on trash releases like man another Lara croft? Wtf ima punt this Chrome device and just say the company has no right to even be considered a gaming company.

They already doing it with ubisoft.  All the big studio's going for there own subscription, some already have 2 pricing one for older games and one for older and new.

We heading to subscriptions only. No buying a game and own it anymore.

I like digital gaming but I want to buy and own.

The games bring us the games.

We don't need the community, or news, or marketing, or features, or exclusives, or YouTube, or anything ... but games.

Give us the games.

The promise of Stadia is "one place for all the ways we play", not "play exclusives only possible on Stadia". Put down your pitchfork and be sensible. Go play games on the one place the way you want.

It's not the end for Stadia. It's currently the end for Stadia's internal game development team. Yes it's sad, but you don't know what you have until you have it.

Looking like google is starting to wake up to see that Amazon Luna had the right idea. You cant have people buying games on a platform that makes up only 1% of gamers. You need to have stadia pro with some other stuff you pay one price you get all the games. Some may have a hard time understading why that is good so i will help. If i was going to make a new game but i was told my total number of sales is what i would make for money on the game i would say no to have it come to stadia, Why because you would never make the cash you need to port it to stadia, But if you told me this game was on pro so i make my money off how many times people click on my game ok now we are talking. This is why Luna will end up being the top dog. Give all amazon prime members a free Luna plus membership now you are talking about millions of people can now click on my game. I been saying it for years you cant have a open store cloud service if you do not have the player numbers.
