Hi,
I'm currently playing Star Wars 2019 on Google Stadia.
I have two operating systems - Windows 7 and Windows 10, on separate partitions.
On Windows 10, Google Stadia works perfectly, but if I switch to Windows 7, Stadia is not playable because there is too much input lag.
What could this be caused, any advice for it?
I turned off hardware acceleration in my browser, but it didn't help.
Both systems are updated on a regular basis.
Hey @P4Jn,
I am not quite sure what's causing the issue here on your Windows 7 partition, but can you check if it maybe can be solved by performing troubleshooting steps from this article? Especially the ones in the "device issues" section might help here.
Otherwise, can you maybe check if the Chrome Browser version might be different from the one you're using on the Windows 10 partition? Maybe you didn't have the latest Chrome Browser on the Win 7 one?
Can you also check if your internet connection might be working differently on your Win 7 than on Win 10?
Hope this helps, but let us know when the steps didn't work. You can also consider contacting the Stadia support who might be able to help you as well, maybe they know some additional TS steps.
Well. Thanks for the message.
The Windows partition is OK, the system was put up not so long ago. But it does not matter, as the same problem had occurred much earlier.
Both browser versions are identical. Same with Microsoft Edge (Chromium).
Internet connection is ok, I have over 120MB / s on both systems.
I started to wonder if this was not a problem on the Microsoft side. Windows 7 is not supported, but still used
Hello @P4Jn
Just a couple more thoughts in addition to the ideas from @Chufu
First, if you're using a mouse and keyboard, take a look at adjusting the polling rate downwards. It may be too high on Windows 7. That would look like stutter when moving the mouse.
I know you said you disabled hardware accelerated decoding, but I would also be looking at what video encoder is being used (H.264 or VP9), and if you're using an extension to force VP9, if the Windows 7 drivers aren't managing to make hardware decode work properly, it could cause stutter trying to decode on the CPU.
Hi JohnZoidberg.
I mainly play the pad since XO, version 1708.
During the game I switched to the mouse and keyboard to check the operation, but the effect was the same.
As for the VP9 and H264 codec ... I installed the Stadia + Extension with the thought that it would help, but still, the effect is the same - although on Windows 10 it helped, because the input lag is smaller and noticeable.
Well, at the moment, I don't see any other possibilities of checking. Maybe you have any ideas ...?
Hey @P4Jn
Ok, so it's not the mouse polling rate, then. I'm not sure what else to suggest, but it still seems possible it's the video codec. Can you check to see what your CPU usage is like while playing? If one of the cores is at 100%, I'd be looking more deeply at how the video decoding is happening. I don't use any of the Stadia extensions, but I believe one of them has an overlay that shows some statistics, including packet loss, jitter buffer, and per-frame decoding time. Something like that could be informative here.
Well, I figured I'd be switching to Windows 10 every time if I wanted to play Stadia. For my part, everything on the subject.
Hello,
Dunno if it could help, but you can diag easelly what the problem with this addon : https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stadia-enhanced/ldeakaihfnkjmelifgmbmjlphdfncbfg
You will see every stats when in game. Please post a screenshot and I would be able to provide some help. Also try https://www.vsynctester.com/ to see if there isn't any delay basically.
Hi, @Barthandelus
I did the test, I don't have any delays.
I am attaching a screenshot of the statistics that tell me little:
I told you this addon always show up the problem ![]()
"Unfortunately, if you're still on Windows 7 or 8.1 and use Chrome, it doesn't matter if you bought your GPU yesterday — VP9 won't be hardware-accelerated in Chrome. [...] VPx decoding isn’t supported well before Windows 10 creators update.: 616318, 667532 [...]".
@spwrozek answer is probably the good one.
Also, you have an high latency, for me (EDIT : "Higher latency than me" must be much correct. But I don't think this difference will bother you). Check out how much I have in game :
As you can see :
- Latency is 7ms VS 48 ms
- Jitter Buffer is 26ms VS 39ms
- You have compression (probably due to VP9 ? Dunno)
- Decoding time is 3ms VS 7ms
It's not a huge difference but you can probably optimize Stadia somehow here. With the addon, you can force the use of H264 that is, for me, the solution to your problem.
Also, consider that Chrome works a way that impact Stadia performances. Once you have more than 1 tab opened, Stadia performances will be impacted. Also, Chrome use cache. It means that if you, for example, use Chrome, see 10 websites, then close everything and then use Stadia, your performances will be decreased VS launching Chrome then directly start Stadia.
EDIT : I'm curious. Could you please provide the same screenshot but on Windows 10 to make a versus ?
This is going to be a non helpful answer but Windows 7 support ended 4 months ago by Microsoft. Probably time to accept and move on to Windows 10 only?
Well, Windows 10 is a tragedy, especially on an older PC, even with an SSD. For now, only Windows 7 is best suited. I came back to Stadia after a long time, also on Windows 7, thinking that the problem is no longer there. Well, I was wrong. I am disappointed and have no intention of returning to Stadia.
Hello @P4Jn
Please be aware that Windows 7 is end of life and there is no support anymore.
It is not a smart thing to use Windows 7 when you are using internet.
There is also no support from Google Stadia on Windows 7 because it's end of life.
I would recommend to upgrade your hardware or have look at a Linux distro like Pop! OS.
Linux is free to use and these will still get security updates. Stadia is also usable on Pop! OS or any other modern linux distro with Chrome for that matter. ![]()
I am aware that Windows 7 is no longer available.
However, it is still one of the best systems from Microsoft, newer versions of windows are a mockery. I will think about some Linux, or come to terms with Microsoft and install Windows 10.
So much for my part, I decided to buy new equipment that can be upgraded to Windows 11.
You have to come to terms with Microsoft once again. ![]()
Great to hear @P4Jn
Hope it works out well and you can enjoy your new PC / OS and of course Stadia. ![]()
Of course, I leave the problems behind, even with Stadia, having new hardware with the new Windows.
Windows 7 had to be abandoned, because only problems.
