Help! Pin prevents kids from playing on Chromecast with Google TV

I've had the kids set up with their own Stadia accounts for years, and have the accounts set up on their phones and Chromebooks so they can play themselves. Works great!

Previously had accounts set up on Chromecast ultra, but now using the Chromecast with Google TV. Unfortunately, there seems to be some sort of blocker or bug with the android TV app.

Here's what happens:

  • Switch to kids profile
  • Launch Stadia
  • Stadia logo is shown
  • Wait a few seconds while it loads
  • The app seems to crash, then asks for my parent pin
  • If I go back home, reopen the app, it still asks for pin.
  • If I put in my pin, it then goes to the profile select screen and then I can reopen the app to start playing.

Effectively it seems like the Stadia app (and only the Stadia app) is behind some sort of pin lock or account login bug.

Please help! This situation has prevented the kids from independently using the TV app. If I'm not around, they can't play stadia on the TV.

Hi @PersonHuman

Sounds like a bug indeed.

The first time you setup the Stadia app and you are logging in it asks you to create a PIN.

You are able to ignore this, this is not mandatory while setting up.

Could you try the following:

  • Google TV settings
  • App settings
  • Stadia app - Force stop
  • Stadia app - clear cache
  • Stadia app uninstall

After this reboot your Google TV and reinstall Stadia. Login with your account and at first don't set a PIN.

When this is done setup the kids accounts

A workaround is to use the kids phone and cast to Google TV.

Please let me know if this works.

This doesn't solve the problem, but I found a workaround. I think it has to do with the login experience.

Currently whenever I sign in on the kids profile, it asks me for a pin to verify I'm a parent and then to pick a profile. Every time it asks me to select a profile.

The workaround is to turn off "profile lock" on the kids profile. In this case it still shows the profile picker every time, but I don't need to verify I'm a parent.

It should already know which profile is logged in, right? Why would it need to ask for profile every time the Stadia app boots up? I thought they fixed that.
