Are the reports true? Is Google Stadia closing it’s doors?
No, they will stay open. How long though without exclusive games to bring new “blood” over to the platform? That’s the real question I think we as the community should be asking.
I have been seeing a lot of reports showing that Google is decidedly shutting down Stadia Game Studios with Phil Harrison the VP and general manager of Google Stadia saying increased costs are the reason for the procedure. Whether this is due to Jade Raymond leaving as well is yet to be determined.
I also saw a YouTube video here reporting Google Stadia Shutting down. - https://youtu.be/oaDR0fI-J_s
So what’s the deal? First the question is that Stadia has had a very increased rate of respect and success. I have really been enjoying what it has to offer. Couldn’t this simply be fixed by increasing the cost of memberships to 14.99 a month? Or even 19.99 for exclusive access to new games being developed?
If costs were the only reason surely a new model could be used to rectify the situation they are facing.
Next the question is what happens to all the purchases? Are the customers being sold off to another platform along with the access to their games?
Most likely in some form they will remain alive. But without new games there’s no fresh blood being pumped into the platform to keep it “living.”
A lot of news reports suggested that when Stadia was launched they wouldn’t bebt on it as Google has a habit of dropping projects. This was one of the main reasons that kept me away for so long. I decided to jump in because from what I was seeing they were going all in and that this would be different.
Sadly this is not the case. Google have no idea what they are throwing away. This is the next big bubble, and they had an early start and rocky one at that sure; but they have been turning heads and putting optimism in those where there was none. Lately the games they have been bringing over and their execution has been well received. I for one think what they have been doing and how they have gone about it, has been absolutely stellar. They should keep it going. New games being developed is an absolute MUST otherwise it’s just another platform with no exclusives. And we all have seen how well that worked with other systems. It doesn’t work, it creates a sinkhole for the rest of the platform to fall into.
Who else feels differently or agrees?
One more promise what is brocken...
And by far the Most interessting.
IT Shows that the trust in stadia is sinking. It is typacly Google.
I'm using Stadia a different way. I dont need exclusives. It would be nice to see a technical showpiece but it's not necessary. I just want to play my games on different form factors. I want to play on my big TV, smartphone, desktop PC, umpc and so on. After struggling for a while I decided to give cloud gaming a try and I was surprised how well it worked. Now I got allot of games on Stadia. It would be a shame if Google would shut down it's service or sell it. But as shown in the past, services not running well got shut down by Google - hello Google+. Common Google. Games are a different thing. It's art. Don't make the gaming community hate you. Give us some love. Give us a roadmap. Give us some information. You won't regret it.
I think google is doing the right thing here. There are already loads of studios that produce amazing games: Activision, Ubisoft, EA, Konami, EPIC, Origin, CD Projekt Red, Rockstart, etc. So, what's the point in wasting money creating yours when there are other things to improve and do that, in my opinion, are way more important at the moment, such as:
1.- Make sure the platform works flawlessly on TV and PC. No latency, connectivity, graphics, fps, resolution or loading times issues.
2.- Increase the number of users as much as possible. They are already planning to do this by integrating stadia on LG 2021 TV's. They could also offer stadia and youtube premium together for £14.99. And, obviously, add mainstream titles such as COD or FIFA.
3.- They can now also offer game studios deals to develop/adapt mainstream titles games for stadia. Which is way cheaper and more profitable than producing your own exclusives form scratch.
4.- Google by opening their tech to publishers is playing a similar card that TESLA did, who doesn't own any patents. They are speeding up the transition to cloud gaming and facilitating the development of games for the platform.
I hope not to be wrong, but only time will tell. In any case, it is clear that cloud gaming is the future of gaming and it will eventually happen.
Totally agree. Plough the money into making Stadia the go to Cloud platform, get the 3rd party AAA titles on release date and make it a viable option to PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X and its in a good place. Xbox are buying up developers left, right and centre and only producing a handful of in house games as I would surmise this is where the money is.
